  • I remember when this happend a baseball game was going on and the light went out a two decks collapsed.....a mini serise was put on tv showing what happend and the lives lost that day.........really sad indeed

  • Somebody said this was fake? Wow!! That means I must have been dreaming when I was a kid and the whole house started shaking on this day and my mom must have been trippin when she just made it off the Bay Bridge right before it hit....

  • whomever said the footage isn't real should have their ass kicked. What a stupd fucking moron. I hate that person because I live in California and there is nothing fake about this video. What an uneducated asshole.

  • I cannot believe this took place 22 years ago. I still remember this earthquake.

  • I remember this, i'd just got into American Football at the time and remembered they had to close Candlestick Park.

  • @WABBITS8 It happened right before the World Series, which had both Bay Area teams playing at Candlestick Park. I hear that people in the stadium were calm the whole time.

  • @Coastergeekperson04 Which is very brave of them, don't you think?

  • its not the oakland bay bridge its the sf bay bridge

  • @Weirdoguy55 It's actually called the Richmond Bay Bridge.

  • @mythid12 That ain't the Richmond bridge, it's the Oakland Bay Bridge that goes between Oakland and San Francisco.

  • i know the caltrans (dot) guy who told the indian lady to turn right off the bridge, instead she turned left because she no speaka engrish, and drove off the collapsed section to the deck below and died.

  • this isn't that bad. atleast as not as bad as the Bridge collapse in Minnesota in 2007

  • shit san francisco xD

  • oh no

i hope smosh wasnt on that bridge!

    btw smosh lives in California

  • This is real and it happened during the World Series of 89.

  • Seriously? People are saying it's fake? I was 4 when it happened, my mom and I were grocery shopping and it was terrifying. Stuff was falling off the shelves and exploding, and I didn't want to go to that store for a long time afterwards.

  • @valuemeal2 its real beside I remember seing it on TV when I was in Kindergarden when I lived in Fresno CA thank goodness we didn't get Earthquake in Fresno.

  • @valuemeal2 I was in Kindergarden when I saw this vid on TV, I was living in Fresno CA Thank goodness we didn't had earthquake in Fresno, that would have been Scary.

  • @ORANGEDlAREAH Glad you took time out of the day to comment on my comment. Thanks for the love you d-bag

  • I'm surprised some people aren't saying it was a conspiracy.

  • @ejthomp99 Reagan did it to support the taliban for 9/11 haha.

  • Arkansas is the place to go. The only thing to worry about is small earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, and some other shit that aint that bad! :D

  • @tvfan103 only?

  • its real i live out here i rember

  • My teacher was in this earthquake..........

I am standing on the fualt write now and CA isnt that scary

PEOPLE MOVE TO NJ ITS AWSOME

  • still kind of eerie driving over the bay bridge...thankfully it gave way right over a support so more tragedy didnt happen

  • I'm from NY and was watching the W.S. This is very real. I guess the lower level traffic and upper level traffic go in different directions. I believe it was fatal for the person in the red car.

  • L4D2?

  • ONE PLACE WHERE NOTHING BAD HAPPENS EUROPE LOLZ U NEVER HEAR BOUT SHIT GOIN DOWN IN EUROPE BUT THEN AGAIN U GOTTA DEAL WITH ALL THE FUCKIN EUROPEANS SO I GUESS ITS JUST AS BAD

  • and this quake ruined the chance for my home team for their world series win >:l

  • Old school merging.

  • Refresh my memory: I don't live in California, but was this the Loma-Prieta earthquake, or the Northridge earthquake?

  • @Catergory5Hurricane Loma-Prieta earthquake

  • Find out when next earthquake may occur:

    WORLD-EARTHQUAKES . COM

  • i was there when that happend it was crazy it was really scarry in west oakland also i seen it all

  • looks like the parish finale on l4d2

  • @Horrormaster95 Very real. I was there.

  • the worst earthquake to hit east coast was in 1889 in charleston s.c. magnitude 7.3

  • This video triggered my Gephyrophobia when I first saw it.

At least I'm over it now.

  • detour to lower deck!

  • yeah my dad was working i think at the sir francis drake in the city or some hotel hes an excutive chef and the kitchen is basically underground during the whole quake

  • fucken scary!!! and over water??? ah hell no!!!!!!!

  • The New Bridge had been build

  • Well....I certainly won't be visiting San Francisco after watching this video.

  • @Drazhenko i visit sf all the time:)

  • @Drazhenko dude earthquakes that cause that damage dont happen all the time. just when you're least expecting it

  • @hellojulie

They never happen in some places. In San Francisco they happen every few decades. And people are retarded enough to build two story bridges in places like these...which is why I am not going. There is other earthquake prone cities like Istanbul too.....I feel so bad for them when the next big one hits. At least San Francisco updates it's building codes somewhat.

  • @Drazhenko Worst ever recorded on the East Coast was a 3.6, which occured @July 7, 2010 (yes, this year) in Gaithersburg, Maryland (where I live). First earthquake I've ever experienced, so didn't know what was going on. Was sleeping and next thing I knew, the whole house was shaking and a rumble in the air. Yeah that is a minor quake but for an area that has never felt a quake stronger than a 2.5 before, it was quite a shock.

  • @TyVulpine correction, it was July 16th, not July 7th

  • @TyVulpine there was a 4.5 near Richmond, VA in 2003

  • @grungyflannel I stand corrected.

  • @Drazhenko Well this can happen to any bridge.... and it’s been fixed- the new one is up.... I cross it A LOT! To visit family member... now that I think about it I cross lots of bridges haha

  • Comment removed

  • that bridge was racist

  • i whish i can go back to 1989 in san francisco at 5:04 on octobrer 17.1 wasonly born on 1999.

  • @MissYvette415 no you dont

  • My Uncle was sent there to help. He said it smelled so bad of dead bodies. RIP

  • Horror during earthquake in the balkans:

    youtube.com/watch?v=HnYQXId3q5E

  • Omg, I was 13 when that quake hit, the A's were about to start the world series, my mothers best friend died coming back from working in SF, I think she was on the freeway that collapsed. Before you say it's fake do your research! RIP Deloris!

  • well at least it wasnt the bottom floor

  • whoevers calling this a fake is the fucking biggest retard on this planet. you probably dont even live in california so shut the fuck up.

  • @paulwallbaybay I agree. No matter what the video is on here its always called fake and there is always someone insulting someone else. I could video myself eating an apple and people would say its fake

  • @Steelershaterforlife your comment is fake lol....sorry im so just kiddin....and yeah you are right....its ridiculous

  • @paulwallbaybay Fake, I remember it well during the 1989 WS.

  • @liberalinthedesertaz you are an idiot, ya someone totally created fake footage of the bay bridge collapse.......... and i think it's disrespectful to anyone who was injured or worse during this incident for you to say its not real.

  • who built that bridge? ray charles?

  • This will happen in Seattle eventually. Just gotta have faith in engineering I guess.

  • That bridge held up pretty well. In days gone by, that whole thing would be conspicuously missing ... -.-

  • That is scary, but the Cypress Street Freeway collapse was even scarier!

  • looks like a level from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

  • @kotzundspring

    bahaah for reals

  • ahahahahah thts wat i was gonna say! hahahah

  • @kotzundspring havent passed that level yet

  • @clevelandsmith65

it's on Spec Ops mode of mw2

  • @speedy9738 no shit dur

  • @kotzundspring Suspension

  • @kotzundspring duh it was based off of this you idiot

  • @liberalinthedesertaz im sorry?

  • My mum and dad lived there when this happened. and i went back to visit with them and they are building a new one...but its like behind date.

  • Who builded that bridge...Ricardo Lagos???

  • my teache waz watching this live nd sw the live collapse . she waz crying becaus it fell on a car . those people in the car died

  • How strong would an earthquake have to be to severely damage SanFran nowadays?

  • 7.1

  • @Firithfalaswen It depends on many factors such as location, depth, ground velocity, etc.

The modern structures are usually built to withstand a 7.0 but the structures built immediately after the 1906 earthquake were built to WEAKER building codes than the pre-existing structures due to politics of course. Because of limited media at the time, investors had no idea the city had been completely destroyed. And the city leaders wanted the city finished for some world fair type thing.

  • Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 is very real people DOH!

  • u see youtubers earthquakes are scary

  • u see when cali has earthquakes people first satnd still to c if its big or notthen run here in missouri when had a little little one and ppl were tripping over themselves(including me) tryin to run and ours happened in the middle of the night half of people didint even no we had one it was so little but we dont get earthquakes here so it was shocking something im not use to that wa smy first one now if that earthquake happened here iwuld se how pl react then man!!!!!

  • how da fk can u live in a place prone to so many earthquakes !

  • No where is safe. You live on the California coast, you got earthquakes. You live on the east or gulf coast you got hurricanes. You live in the south or mid-west, you got tornadoes, violent storms, and floods. If you live in the north-west (i.e. Seattle), eventually Mt. Rainer will erupt. So it's pick your poison....

  • @TheVlad, I seemed much happier out in southern Michigan (Novi actually) with thunder/lightning and the courtesy tornado warnings. Oh yes, CA can also get their funnel clouds and that is rare if it does happen. Yeah one does pick their poison but don't let the serenity and quiet fool you however just live it up.

  • tornado for me, thank you very much

  • @MsJessi111 If you live in the north: how can you live in a place so prone to blizzards and freezing temperatures?

If you live in the midwest: how can you live in a place so prone to tornados?

If you live in the south: how can you live in a place so prone to hurricanes?

What an ignorant thing to say...

  • this is not fake.........IT'S REAL!!!!!!

  • @fondness1012

This is not FaaaaaaaKe !!!!!!!!!!! I was 20 when this quake hit. By far the scariest day of my life.

  • It is not fake, the 89 Earthquake is real. You moron.

  • Mexico City, Chile, SF, LA, you name it. They are NOT FAKE.

  • Its not fake. Look it up. San fransisco quake of 89.

  • The San Francisco 89 Earthquake is real. You got to be a real idiot to think this is a fake. That means you are an idiot.

  • Is this real?

  • Yes, but people only freak out because its so close to home in america.

I mean its a horrible disaster but its hardly noticable even compared to the rest that happened that year.

A US company with bad security standards in india killed more people alone that year than all the other disasters combined. (bhopal disaster) Russian trains collided and killed several hundred people. If your looking for ecological disasters the infamous exxon valdez spill was that same year. Theres probably more.

  • crazy

  • We were all the way in Sacramento...and that quake emptied our pool halfway. I will still never forget the footage the news crews accidently shot from the Oakland Bridge (before they realized how gruesome it was)....it was like a slasher film.

  • I know kammerz10, it's scary to think about. My plan is to leave CA and go back East (which is where I'm from originally), and live in relative safety, far away from the threat of quakes, within the next 4-6 years. While I'm here though, I have my emergency plan and my supplies together though......you better believe that!

  • Are you sure? I thought it was closer to an 8...I'll look in the Almanac....god everyone is checking out earthquake videos I've been thru 3, worst a 5.6 (Oregon) it is TERRIFYING as f**k.

  • Almost aspacelot, it was a 6.9 in 89, actually. Almost a 7.0 or 7.1 though.

  • @tillyboos

To this day, I don't think everyone is on the same page regarding the magnitude of the '89 quake. For years I remember it being called a 7.1 magnitude, but more recently I hear the figure 6.9 thrown around. I do still hear 7.1 as well. So I'm not sure if it has been officially downgraded, or if there has been conflicting reports on the magnitute within the scientific community all along. I was 7 years old when the quake hit. I rember it like yesterday. This brings me chills.

  • Holy crap the 89 quake was just the same size as the 2010 Haiti Quake

  • When sf have a big one I agree to kill myself!!!!

  • But I wonder when the next big earthquake like this will hit San Francisco...

  • They say California is going to have a MAJOR earthquake within the next 100 years, (well that was a couple years ago), seismologists say it will be possibly as bad as the one in 1906, 1989, it's right on theSan Andreas fault.

  • 1906, that was 100 years ago. Hope everyone is ready.

  • learn to count

  • 2010-1906=104

  • ya my bad i confused my self but its supposed to happen in 1000 years i think

  • no thats in like 1000 years i think

  • say bloody bridge 3 times and the bridge will disappear and it will haunt you whenever you are at the bridge

  • They call it the Great Quake of '89, but I barely noticed it until my dad asked me to help him keep the big screen tv from falling! Even at 13 years old I was already pretty jaded on quakes.

  • This is precisely why CalTrans just spent billions rebuilding the Eastern span of the Bay Bridge. In the next quake (which will be BIGGER than 89), they don't want the bridge to collapse again. Which, I have to say is kind of pointless, considering the damage the 89 quake did, and it wasn't even a 7.0. I agree with you Thelxtlan, I don't think SF will be able to withstand a higher magnitude than 89 w/o more serious damage than 89 caused. It's going to be much, much worse. It really scares me.

  • it was 7.1 btw

  • I'm terrified. I went thru 3 in Oregon, worst was a 5.6, damaged the Pioneer on the State Capital bldg, put a crack in the marble structure, and after watching these videos I want to get off the planet, I can't imagine living in California right now, I would be scared too.

  • asshole news helicopter jus floatin around as opposed to gettin people back to safety...fuckin pure american bullshit

  • i'm sooo not ready for the big one....

  • Well i think we can all agree that the "BIG ONE" has occurred in Haiti....

  • Also after the quake, due to a mix-up traffic was directed toward instead of away from where the break in the bridge was!

  • San Francisco will not able to withstand a 7.9 or 8.1 earthquake. If there 7.4 or 7.5 hit San Francisco, there will be considerable damage on bridges and freeway and tall buildings.

  • Look at the the recent 2010 Eureka quake and the 2010 Hatian Quake it Shows that We are really not prepared for a quake. We are waiting for the Hayward Fault to respond.

  • No one is prepared, we do not know when the next one will be, we depend on Stupid machines, we do not know how to survive b/c we want everything easy, and the next one to hit, the bay and all the way to LA will be gone, true that.

  • That's true, I live in SF, and it's all sand dooms, houses will fall easily. There has been 3 earthquakes so far in this 2010, the hardest was 4.1, the hardest we'll get will be 8.4

  • Were anyone killed?

  • Not on the bridge.

  • yes the driver of the ford LTD was crushed on the lower deck of the bridge.

  • The upper structure was weak... was it due to the defect of the beam that decayed prior to the earthquake that went unnoticed, until the earthquake happened? I bet it was a very scary and unexpected sunken feeling that proved to be an urgent wake up call for Caltran and for one unlucky commuter across the upper deck of the bay bridge heading toward San Francisco. By that time, I was in Concord, working on the computer.

  • Today is the 20th anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake.

  • I was in Kindergarden living in Fresno C.A. when this happened

  • you think Ron burgondy would have covered this

  • it was a joke man chill out

  • yea i was two.. and i was told there was a family friend on the bridge headed towards our house that day! freakn scary

  • lol sucks for the people in trafic

  • I'd hate to be on one of those bridges during an earthquake.

  • My friend from high school was on the Bay Bridge when the quake hit...and his leg had to be amputated :(

  • In a big earthquake there will be several sections collapse like this~ or worse

    love to SF

  • My grandpa barely survived this earthquake. He was on the bay bridge when driving a loaded car hauler. True story, whether you believe it or not. :/

  • @ddrmaniac2wo I'm so sorry.

  • Well now it looks better.

  • Comment removed

  • What does the logo have to do with it? They are just reporting the news and doing their job. Chill out lol.

  • that brought back memories that logo

  • haha good eye... good memories

  • I was in this earthquake, 8 years old at the time. I was at my daycare when it happened and the ground was rolling, sounded like crumbling bricks and all the car alarms went off. My mother was on a bus on her way to pick up my brother and I from the daycare and the bus swerved all over the road. Came home & my walls were cracked and bed was on the other side of the room my bookshelf fell over..We were out of power at my house for quite a few days and didn't have school that week as a result.

  • I hate that I have to drive over this Erector Set every day. The new Bridge On Rollerskates cannot be built quickly enough.

  • If anything the earthquake gave SF no choice but to finally demolish the double decker freeways that were built in the 50s and 60s. Many locals were thrilled to see them disappear for good, since they were an eyesore to many. Especially the Embarcadero, blocking the view from the Ferry Building to the city skyline.

  • there is still one left - the 280 in SF still a double decker

  • I'm quite sure that the SF population was happy to see them go, NOT because they were "an eyesore" but because they were unstructurally sound. Hundreds of people lost their lives because of the double decker freeways, that is what you need to remember and respect.

  • Correction- hundreds did not die on hwy 880. A total of 66 perished in the entire bay area. Hundreds would have died had the world series game not started at 535pm, making freeway traffic exceptionally light. A sad day.

  • the total people that died on the cypress structure was 43. the mile and a half stretch that collapsed was empty in part to the world series. the 280 and 480 were damaged, one repaired, the other removed. if the two conected like it "should of" back in the early 70's, the 480 portion should still be up right now. liquifaction destroyed nimitz not structual design. it was 2 miles long. check out the construction footage from 1956, here on YT.

  • I'm actually from San Francisco. The top deck of the Bay Bridge is westbound is the one that takes you to San Francisco. And the lower deck takes you to Oakland.

  • Is there a railway on the bottom?

  • the top goes eastbound and the bottom goes westbound

  • i'm pretty sure its the other way around, because in all the vids for the bridge, there driving on the top deck, they're going to SF(which is west)

  • yeah i live in the bay area and yeah its west bound on top and the bottom goes east bound

  • NO.

  • thank you Mr. DUH!

  • top=westbound. And there is railing on the bottom deck.

  • In 1939, three years after the Bay Bridge opened, two railroad tracks for commuter rail were present on the lower deck's south side. The north side was three lanes of auto/truck traffic with direction control by traffic lights. Since 1958, this configuration on the lower deck was discontinued.
