  • This system looks promising but I do have one thing to complain; how come the main displays aren't touchscreens themselves? At least some things you can do on the touchpad control impute can be done faster and easier if done directly on the display itself. Furthermore, any ATC amendments to current route and flightplan among other things can be imputed via rubber-banding; touching the flightleg in question with your finger and sliding it across to where you need it and there's your new waypoint.

  • I'm the 7,777 viewer =D That just means Garmin is Lucky.... I love Garmin

  • Anyway you slice it, the new G3000 is a master stroke, especially for those of us who intend on flying single pilot operations in a VLJ or LJ. I'm glad the Garmin is taking the developmental lead on this technology. Cudos to Garmin for doing it!

I just hope that it will be available as an OEM configuration on all the VLJ and LJ airframes coming to market within the next couple of years: Phenom 300, Hawker 200, HondaJet, Citation IV and the SJ30-2 (if they can find a source of capital).

  • Seems like it would be difficult to do in severe turbulence to me.

  • @MrPilot31091 are you implying that in severe turbulence you wouldn't have a problem turning normal knobs and flicking switches in a traditional cockpit?!

  • @4fifty8 It's easier if you have something physically to hold onto as apposed to when your trying to touch a specific spot and type something.

  • @MrPilot31091 good point, although i don't think it's that much harder. i've texted people while flying through moderate turbulence with no problem. the amount of time that an airplane would spend in severe turbulence would be something like less than 1% i believe. the amount i've experienced in my 8 yrs of flying equates to about 0.1%... probably less actually

  • @MrPilot31091 i hit post too early!... and my point for bringing that up is that i'd way rather have a touch screen for the other 99.9% of the time i'm flying or on the ground inputting my flight plan

  • @4fifty8 That's true, I don't think I'm ever inputting a flight plan in the air unless I'm given an amended route enroute or I'm choosing the approach for my destination. You are right about how often is spent in severe turbulence.

  • @sksakm14 How much does a G1000 cost as installed in a Cessna 172?

  • YES for QWERTY! There should at least be the option. For those who can type, QWERTY would be much faster.

  • I don't quite understand the comment of a needed QWERTY Keyboard. It's not a cell phone or iPod. It's an aviation control panel for MFD/PFD. Unless of course you were joking, which I hope you were. The ALPHA layout is historically standard across aircraft.

  • kinda of mickey mouse

  • how much does the whole system cost. any one with idea.

  • @soojenite Not a clue. I would guess $30-40,000.

  • OMG Garmin is the Google of the Sky innovation after innovation

  • Aha! That answer's my question. How do you safely use touch screen when turbulence hits?

  • anyway, I think it's a great system!
