  • @levlobotomy maybe because it was christmas idiot.

  • @levlobotomy From what I read, the astronauts were all disturbed by the bleak lifelessness of the lunar landscape when they had been alone on the dark side of the Moon - "and the Earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep".

In the original telecast, when they get to the part about "the good Earth", they pan up from the moonscape suddenly to show our world, blue and green and beautiful, hanging in the blackness. They're appreciating their home, not preaching.

  • @levlobotomy A large part of American society believe in religious mumbo jumbo. The Apollo missions used a lot of their hard earned dollars to achieve what they did...

  • @levlobotomy well said

  • i wish i could see Earth from the moon, even if its just a dream. its really sad that their are mysteries in this universe that will never be solved in my lifetime. Imagine how much we'd solve if all countries worked together as an equal. We all live on Earth, Only one Earth. Yet we choose to divide ourselves..

  • May god forgive those who fail to grasp the beauty of this moment.

  • 41 years ago today! Wish i could have heard these brave guys read this from the moon.

  • This is so beautiful. Thank you for posting.

  • Science is pure speculation as well.

  • че ет? оО

  • dang, humble astronauts. The only reason y they made it their and back alive. God allowed it. amen

  • @tooliscool23 god? shut up

  • @tooliscool23 Wow.

  • I, too, don't like the bible as a literal translation, but this was the first time ever that man had been to the moon, so I would think it was quite appropriate.

  • homer63103,

    Little Respect, for these people..

    keep people in there vulue.

    everyone has he's own belief.

  • This was only said out of fear of their deity's wrath for escaping gravity. Like the Tower of Babel was supposedly destroyed for mankind's vanity so was this said to be not being seen as superseding the needs of their imaginary god.

  • I'm a Buddhist, don't believe in God, but if there was an appropriate time to read from Genesis, this was it. I still cry when I watch this.

  • The Koran would be fine.

  • They couldn't stop them from space, no matter how much they may want to, though. If he really wanted to read from Scripture, he could - and should. They haven't quite outlawed free speech yet, though give 'em time...

  • They'd never let him read from this book today.

  • Sad to say I think that they would not do it, because of the out cry that i would cause in the media. for all of history of mankind we looked at the stairs and wonder, why we where hear, and the moon, and Hubble telescope made of realize how small we really are.

  • I listen to this once a week, I am not a religious man, thought my family is, but Its so beautiful to hear the book of genesis read from apollo 8, I would have done the same, to stare down upon the earth, and look apoin it in the same way that god might have. humbling, thats the only word I could think to describe it.

  • Not a religious man myself. Its not so much what he is reading that gets me. Its how it all tied into taking those steps into the great unknown beyond the world we knew and how we were able to both destroy and create.

It basically put the whole world into its true perspective of what can be done and how we are small. so small that our wars mean nothing.

  • Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.

  • GOD CREATED THE WORLD PERIOD

  • What about the rest of the universe?

  • ye that too :D

  • Have you seen god? I believe in cheese and tomato sandwiches because I can SEE them. So don't just come on here saying he DID make the world, because you have NEVER seen him or asked 'God' himself, so how would you know? religion is a petty excuse for those too naive to think of other possibilities. It's an easy answer to the unexplainable. It's an easy way for people too scared to think of other explainations to label it as a man in the sky made it all. It's the cowards way of explaining

  • your a man full of sins i hope God will forgive you

  • I'm a man who has had a lot of shit happen in his life, where there was no 'god' helping me through it. I'm also a man who would rather spend his life focusing on what he CAN see, not what he can't. I wanna fix it without god's help. Nobody in the universe has ever seen him, they rely on word of mouth. Sure, if you believe in him then so be it, but I don't, and not everyone does. It all seems like such an easy explanation to me.

  • Well it wont help you casue you dont believe it. you CANT call God in just a single snap.

  • well if god is so great why the fuck wasn't he there when I needed someone? Where was god when I was at the lowest of the low? I wanna work on fixing my life, not worrying about some myth that people spend their lives worshiping. Mary had an affair.... She got horny, she didn't give birth to the son of god. How is god possible? It's ridiculous. No drinking, no sex, no nothing. I wanna enjoy the short time I have on this planet, starting with a good old wank.

  • LoL lemme explain God loved us so much that he unchained us from evil BUT he let us decide if we stay IN that Chain or not. so he only unchained that chain IT IS YOUR CHOICE IF YOU WANT TO STAY OR GO WITH HIM BY BELIEVING HIM.

  • Yeah..... that's the theory, but all the evil you talked about wasn't me. It was out of my hands, I was to good guy in this. It sounds to me like someone went "yeah, god sounds like a good explanation to the world," "What about evil?" and someone just quickly rustled up "God gave you the choice of free will" If he is so good and clever he would make EVERYONE good people. It is a lame excuse. I'm sure you're a nice enough guy, but I've had far too much on my plate to believe in god...

  • well this ends here. God bless you :)

  • Good idea. our Apologies for our differences. People believe different things I suppose. Enjoy your day

  • Without god you wouldnt be here commentng rue comments on him.

  • Listen buddy, what gives god the right to be the only one in existence and we are his minions? Why is the top prize meeting him? I don't want to. Where the fuck was he when I needed someone? What makes you sure it's a HE? What makes you so sure he exists? It's too easy an explanation. "God made it all" What an easy way out. free will is a way of justifying it, heaven is to stop fear of death, jesus was an affair that got OUT OF HAND. Leave me alone you fool.

  • Where was he? no he created u to do something about ur problem he created u to do something about the problem of other's same rule goes with me and other ppl

  • He didnt make u to just cry and sit beside ur stupid computer

  • He didn't make me full stop. Where did he come from? How can you believe that he was ALWAYS there, no beginning.... I don't know what I believe, but I can't settle for some guy in the sky just making it all with his mind... it just sounds obsurd. Surely all christians mustttttt find it hard to believe sometimes that he was just THERE.

  • Definitely. The concept of an eternal being fries our heads but it is up to you on what you believe.

  • I agree with you on the point that people are way too reliant on an abstract thought.

I do not believe in god myself simply because I believe I am in charge of my own life. Some people with that "Jesus Take the Wheel" mentality are the kinds who will not take responsibility for their own actions and believe "It was the grace of god that I did this" Instead of believing in their own abilities which they believe they do not posess.

  • Some people with the "I don't believe in God because I believe in myself" mentality are the kinds who will not take responsibility for their own actions - because they have no moral compass. Quit posting your hatred.

  • You are right. However, I am not spouting hatred. I am not saying all are like that nor am I touting other religions as being the same. In fact, I never once mentioned that any or all religions or their followers were like that. Stop getting offended just because I said certain people who put all their success or good luck in someone elses hands do not have responsibility. Yes it could be said that people like myself are the same. So careful with your words there since I am not bashing religion

  • Because God isn't your personal errand boy to fix all of your problems for you. That's up to you. God's concern is for your soul.

  • how do you know you pompous idiot, have you got a direct line to this imaginary deity?

wake up; its the 21st century, not the middle ages. everyone knows that religion is a con. those that don't are just living in fear of the fact that when you die, that's it. the religious bullshit is just comforting nonsense for people with limited intelligence.

any belief in anything beyond death is just pure speculation, there's no evidence whatsoever to support this fictional rubbish. religion is fraud

  • "Faith is to Believe what you can not see, and the reward of your faith is to see what you believe"

just put it this way if you believed in God you have nothing to lose !!!!! but if you didn't and it turned to be true..... all i can say to you, good luck my friend and please send my cheers to Mr. Lucifer :)

  • at least hell's exciting!

but seriously - each to their own - it's just my opinion -what really concerns me is people acting as a mouthpiece for "god" and assuming they know how the guy 'operates'.

If "god moves in mysterious ways" then it would be safe to assume that believers should be wary of "putting words into his mouth" -

just because the guy's "a bit quiet" doesn't mean anyone has the right to speak on his behalf

also issagm - I believe in you!

    good luck, from a humanist

  • lol .. yes some people are a pain in the ass, and i agree with everything you have said, and i respect your opinion, because that is the essence of freedom.

and please if i offended you in any way, i apologize :)

my whole point is that it will cost you nothing to believe in God, by the way i am not an expert on these matters, i haven't even read the bible :)

    Cheers

    Issa

  • @Stooguitar

    >I believe in cheese and tomato sandwiches because I can SEE them.

You can't see air or gaseous elements like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, etc. Derp. You can't see love, hate, happiness, pain, pleasure. Derp again.

"Belief" has nothing to do with sight. That's implying a blind person has nothing to believe in for that matter. I understand being non-religious, but come up with a better argument than that.

  • How in the orld did the w get left of of world? :P

  • Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the orld God's invisible qualities his eternal power & divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

If you won't see, or hear the truth when it's time to stand before the Living God & give an account for your life you will have no excuse; it was laid out before your very eyes. It was told to you but you refused.

Matthew 7:23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me"

  • Atheism cannot explain existence.

    Existentialism avoids explanation.

God bless the crew of Apollo 8.

  • If people would read Genesis for the allegory that it represents then I wouldn't have a problem with it, but with so many people reading this book as literal history I have to say that I have reservations.

A remarkable bit of history nonetheless, even with the taint of liberal biblical interpretation, and one that really got me into science back in 1968.

  • who are you? couldn't care if you have a problem with Genesis or not....the fact is God created the heaven and the earth and we continue to PRAY that GOD, our creator, will bless us and He has blessed us with salvation through Jesus Christ

if you have a problem with this well too bad....this is literal history, Christian Americans visited the moon and rejoiced and gave thanks at what they saw, the hand of God in all things and if you have a problem with this well too bad

  • I suspect all three astronauts (or at least two of the three) who went round the moon on Apollo eight read it rather more "literally" than "allegorically."

    But you suit yourself.

THOSE men undertook a literal "leap of faith" during the week of Christmas 1968.

Too bad for you that you are unable...or simply unwilling...to do the same.

You'll note they survived the leap....

  • I agree with you, my comment is tangential to the event. My problem is with the literal interpretation of this particular book, not with its allegorical meaning. Peace.

  • Bravo..ever notice how atheists refuse to believe in anything that makes them think of a power greater than themselves? God? No way. Science fiction? ABsoLUTEly! A trip to the moon? No Way! Cloning humans? OH YEAH RIGHT ON! I pray for them all, but sometimes it is hard, especially when they purposely mock ALL that made their own lives better. Because THEY can't claim a role in it.

  • I'm an atheist and I for one like this reading. It's only like an Ancient Greek praising Zeus or a Norseman who declares the might of Thor. The Bible is part of our myth and culture and it's nice that despite being able to fly round the moon we still believe in things like the magic man who lives in the sky. Cool.

  • Ever notice how christians refuse to accept any other view point apart from theire own. And seem to believe that anyone who doesn't belive in the existence of God is empty, and nihalistic?

  • I am Christian and I don't think the bible, in many parts, is meant to be taken LITERALLY. Do people really think it would take one single 24 hours of what we know as a day to make man? To separate water from the earth? To CREATE a planet? Because I'm Christian, I believe the bible, and I know that God, who has infinite time, has days longer than we can imagine. Does an evolutionary cycle or any other theory about creation mean God didn't start it or do it? No. God created the world.

  • @TL126

Ever notice how atheists inherently believe that all Christians are the same and that they don't listen to others' opinions? Obviously not. Most Christians I know study a lot of science, and a few even admit the plausibility of evolution, in the adaptive sense. But there's a difference between "accepting" and "agreeing". You can't expect someone with different beliefs to agree with you. If that's what you're after, you're a retard.

  • @TheSe7enthSin

Ever notice how people get so worked up over Youtube comments. I know enough christians to know that they are not all the same and many are willing to accept and even meld their beleifs around scientific fact. My statement was merely aimed at those who have clearly no ability to think outside of their little boxes and spout religious ideology on a Youtube video. One, may I add, of the most moving pieces of film there is.

  • @TL126

I wasn't worked up about it. I just thought it was kind of stupid the way you came off in your comment, that's all. No disrespect or anything. But I agree to some extent, except that the guy -was- reading an excerpt from the bible, so expecting people -not- to make comments regarding religion is still a bit unreasonable. I don't care for talking for nor against religion either way, but yeah.

  • @TheSe7enthSin If you can't see the double morale in this blatent attempt at trying to appear intelligent and enlightened, you're a retard.

  • @puttings It's spelled "blatant", and I couldn't care less what your opinion of me is. I don't even know what you're talking about at this point, because I don't even remember how long ago I commented on this video to begin with.

  • Who on earth believes in science fiction? I think the word fiction shows it isn't real. And are you saying that atheists don't believe man went to the moon? If so you just found one here who does believe it, and why? because of the power of science, not the power of 'God'. I think you should learn to accept there are people you can't convince, leave them to believe what they want and they'll do the same to you. Peace out.

  • I remember this.
