@Brollyhero93TOP10 according to my uncle, he played this song to a crowd that was heavily into the beatles at his friend's party while he was on his dj'ing duties back in 1972...needless to say, there was complete silence. Next thing you know, he was immediately replaced. History has proven that anything ahead of its time will either be feared or misunderstood right then but will be appreciated later on. Same thing happened to blue cheer and black sabbath when they first hit the music scene.
The whole point of a track like this is to shock the listener, and this accomplishes that very purpose. This is not Iggy's showcase but rather Ron Asheton's, with his squealing and howling guitar. Playing something like this publicly would certainly provoke a reaction from people. This type of sound would scare little kids. The Stooges recorded a 17-minute version of this too which they simply titled "Freak". and it's even crazier than the official 5-minute version.
It's like a shriek of existential despair and yet life-affirming at the same time. I love the animal roaring. Also, everyone says it's an instrumental but Iggy is clearly saying SOMETHING.
amazing record. just gets weirder and more aggressive, till you reach LA blues where it sort of goes off into space. a bit like "european son" at the end of the first velvet underground album. husker du did it too, on "zen arcade", slayer did it on "reign on blood". lots of good albums end that way: just total collapse.
After hearing this gloriously filthy chaos I just want to say the word "fuck." Not incredulously or in disbelief, it just makes me want to feel that word go past my lips with all the dirt and grit you can tack onto it, and just putting it out there. Fuck.
This is noise in purest most beautiful form. I absolutely fucking adore the sound of this magic. I love how the Birthday adapted such a similar sound especially in their cover of Funhouse. Im inlove with any creator of loud, distorted, horrid, fedback, scratchy noise. I get a shiver up my spine on the part when it sounds like he's repeating 'rape me' at 2.20. Absolutely brilliant...brilliant!!!
this album was supposed to capture what theyre live shows were like. the album was recorded live in the studio in order. at the end of a stooges show the last song wudnt just end they keep jammin keep goin and just loose themselves try to do with their insturments what iggy did with his body and just fuckin let loose go nuts and thered be this huge wall of reverb and distortion and it wud be insane. cant really capture that in a studio but this was the attempt
this is not meant to be a song the way it is usually meant to be. This is anger, confusion and energy, and it is so intense. After more than 30 years, It still so fuckin intense
I used to listen to Fun House and skip this last track all the time. One time i was going through depression and anxiety and i listened to this song and i actually like it. Now i don't mind it.
dude no ofense.but how dare you to call this a crap and a rip off?i mean .what good acts.could we really get from an unhappy person like you?i think you d have no life to live to make such a great achivment the stooges had back then.you would still be 400 years old not even making a great song like this and fuck you ididnt mean to offend you.
You miss the point...its garbage yes, but thats the beauty of it. Its ment to make you cringe and say stop! its anger and pain, screaming out and letting your self g because youve got nothing else to do!....thats how i see it.
@thebigfatyoyo Uh... I don't think that's the intent of the song. If that's the case, then people could say that about most experimental/avant-garde music. They probably do anyways because a lot of music listeners have no clue what they're talking about when it comes to this genre. I certainly wouldn't call this "garbage" either... But I suppose music is up for individual interpretation.
@boxwi Yes may sound really crappy, but it releases anger. A lot of people bottle it up and end up getting a heart attack. So scream while you listen to this, turn it up loud and you will fell better when you are angry!
@loamsold I know man. It is a mix of free form jazz with real dirty rock n' roll! Iggy Pop and the Stooges all the way brother. I see what you are saying a poser bands, they suck big time. The Stooges were never posers which is great, they were artists. They did not care about they money, they just cared about playing and having fun. Even though Iggy was shirtless the whole time, it was to scare the crap out of everyone. Not for just looking boss. But he does look really boss.
Tonight I didn't want to look for this album in my room, there's too much mess all around here, so thank you very much for this whole wonderful sharing!
a song like this probably had more effect when it came out because now most people could chand the track with a button. thats why live performances are cool because ur gunna hear what the bands gunna be playing and there is no escape.
