The rain is pouring STILL, relentless; yet so warm and soft, it carresses me. Blinded by tears and Drowning in a flood of memories, I let myself get soaked...Trembling, close to you..X.
Thankyou islanddog68 for uploading this most wonderful of songs.
Wonderful video.Beautiful song. ....I have loved this extraordinary genius from the very first moment I ever saw him & heard him sing. Wonderful actor. Hysterically funny also. Love the sound of the piano.
I know this goes without saying... and I feel like an asshole for even mentioning the subject on such a beautiful video, but how does this get not even 1000 likes, and people like Beiber get 30x that amount ! I mean, I understand that the majority of people are idiots, but come on ! This deserves so much more ! :[ Now get back to enjoying the music ! :]
Katie Perry based her new song ''The One That Got Away'' on this but in my opinion, i'd rather listen to this anyday, absolutley beautifuly heartbreaking!
And all this in the key of C. Just goes to show us all....It's so simple when you have this level of talent or to put it another way this amount of love for what you do....
I am a ham fisted piano player and I forced myself to learn this song perfectly on piano ( by the way, singing this song and playing it on the piano will get you laid every time)
TOM WAITS IS THE KING OF MELANCHOLY! HIS SONGS ARE SHEER POETRY AND CLASSICAL MUSIC.COMBINED. WITH A VOICE LIKE SAND PAPER AND GRAVEL HE CAN CREATE A BEAUTIFUL ANGELIC IMAGE ABOUT THE SADDEST OF CIRCUMSTANCES. RESPECTFULLY, RODNEY
And Malicious Raindog, if you haven't already, get an external hard drive. That's what I did to try and avoid losing all my music. Before that I burned a copy of every damn cd I have...and I don't want to talk about how much time that took, lotta stuff. So with that and the hard drive, which I store in a fireproof safe, I should be alright. Good luck getting all your great music back someday.
Strange how a great song affects so many people in the same way. I've been reading thru the comments while thinking of all the things in my past this song reminds me of...an ex I'll admit. No, she wasn't named Martha, doesn't have to be...she's my Martha I suppose and this song we used to listen to. Makes me cry like a fuckin' girl everytime I hear this. I love it though...and Tom Waits is the man!! He thought it mattered then, and he doesn't have to worry, he's not just a man, THE MAN!!
This man's career is nothing less than epic. His development since Closing Time is monumental. I've never heard anybody sing tom's songs better than he does. If you can hear Midnight Lullaby from a live version, it's development from the album is so extraordinary...turning a fine song into something classic out of Hoagy Carmichael.
(I misspelled Hoagy's last name...didn't I....) At frame 3:31, the abandoned joint...I've been there.
@maliciousRaindog, do Tom the favour of buying the cd again, he isn' t the most highly paid guy around, I had a house fire and lost a huge amount of vinyl, first ones I replaced were every cd I could find of his.
Go do the same, and support people you seem to like
Ah, one of my favorites! I had this on compact disc, my last computer crashed and I lost the album, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, and of course the rest of my Tom Waits collection. Damn, and I don't have it on my iPod either, it's 2010, we might not have flying cars, but some puter-nerd should know how to get all my glorious music back unscathed!

To a very special Lady...Thankyou for everything...
I feel so much older now, and you're much older, too...
We were all so much younger then, now we are mature. AND:
Those were the days of Roses, Poetry and Prose, and...All I had was You and all you had was Me;
There was no tomorrows, we packed away our sorrows, and we saved them for a Rainy Day...
It's the wee small hours, and outside a gentle refereshing rain is pouring forth its memories...
I Love You, Can't You See? X.

And I was always so impulsive,
I guess that I still am,
And all that really mattered then
Was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together
Was never meant to be.
And Martha, Martha,
I love you can't you see?
