  • OMG so Romantic!!!

  • Bello, bellissimo film, e poi ho visto nei titoli che il piano è suonato da Lang Lang...che meraviglioso prodotto, confezionato con grande maestria.

  • "You'd better be careful young lady, time can run out." I love how the mom is right cuz of how in the end he dies...

  • Kitty is an amazing character. She is spoiled, shallow, self-absorbed, weak, selfish and slutty at the start of the movie - and she makes one of the most dramatic changes towards the end of the film and becomes a much better, nice, kind, helpful, loving person. She's almost an utterly different person, and she is truly proof that anyone can change if they want to.

    Amazing book, amazing movie.

  • I would love to find a guy just like Edward Norton's character in this movie. Thanks so much for the upload!

  • i love people like you who take the time to post these for others! you rock!

  • Terrific intro. Thanks.

  • Thanks for posting this! Love Edward Norton :) Such an amazing actor.

  • I'll be honest: I do much prefer the book to the movie: my main issue is that the original ending is changed (I hate it when films drastically change the book: minor changes are fine, but major changes, no).

However, that said, Edward Norton is still a fine actor and captures Walter's character very well. The scenery is breathtaking.

  • @LaLunaLeStelleEdIo How did it end in the book

  • nice movie....

  • really like this movie..this is owesome!!!

  • most beautiful story ever, I cried like a baby when I watched it, thanks for posting

  • Brilliant performance of an emotionally inept middle class English man of the era, he does so remind me of Prince Charles!!! I wonder why????

  • interesante historia!!♥

  • The characters look and act exactly as they are described in the book! down to the size of their nose.

  • I loved the book, and I hope the movie is as good or better.

  • Thanks

  • I really really love is film!! Thank you so much fir uploading this film

  • Wow, thanks for this the quality is bad ass :) and this is my first time watching the movie, from the comments it looks like it is going to be good.

  • Why is it people go on and on about the ACTORS, who are simply repeating someone elses' words. What about the author?--William Somerset Maughm, in this case. Doesn't he deserve any of the credit? Just wondering, as I'm an author myself in a small way.

  • thank you!

  • Oh my goodness! He is too cute! So shy and timid. Ooohhh! I could just eat him up!

  • um, i've only watched the 1st few seconds and i'm already thinkin'...WHY DIDN'T THIS GET BEST PICTURE???

  • You are such a good person

  • its is so beautiful .. nice movie

  • thanks for uploading this, I've been meaning to watch this movie for a while now

  • in the end the kid asks who is he. and kitty replies no one of importance. thats mean of her of not letting the father know that there is a possibility he could have fathered that child. Also it was not fair for the child not knowing who his biological father is now that his legal father is dead.

  • @axxymax

It doesn't matter if someone is a biological parent. Whoever *raises* the child is its true parent. Plus, if a parent is not a good person (as is the case with Charlie), it is best that he or she be kept away from the child. (I don't consider Kitty a good person either, but with Walter dead she's all that her child has and is still a better choice than Charlie).

  • @LaLunaLeStelleEdIo According to your logic the kid should also be kept away from kitty as you yourself said that kitty was a bad person. No matter how bad a person is, if he is the father he has all the right to know about his child even if there is the slightest of possibility. You never know how charlie would have reacted once he knew he is the father of the kid. People react differently to different situation, he might be a womanizer but you do not know how he will be as a parent.

  • why is the directors name credited twice

  • Thank you for uploading the movie; I have been wanting to see it.

  • thank you for this movie

  • Jesus, I love Edward Norton<3

  • @sherulzz fk off b*** he's mine

    The Duchess.

    Thank you for your uploads.

  • thanks so much for uploading this movie!

  • Oh Tyler deliver me from my Edward Norton's addiction.

  • i wish i could be the girl naomi watts plays cause then i'd be on this wonderful adventure with Edward Norton :D

  • Walter was absolutely delicious in his pursuit of her. and he was absolutely mouthwatering in his confrontation with her. Naomi Complimented Edward's acting beautifully. They are both excellent performers.

  • thank you so much for uploading !

  • Is 8:39 foreshadowing?

  • This was the remake of the original film starring Garbo. She was great, don't get me wrong, but Norton and Watts are sensational in this version. Thank you so much for posting this movie; I went right out and purchased it.

  • Comment removed

  • Mom: "U better be careful my dear. Time CAN run out." Ohhhh the irony!!!

  • Whoops! didn't mean to post the same point so many times. Computer froze, and I was distracted. Sorry.

  • The book is as Edward Norton describes it: "unremittingly bleak" and the main change is that in the film they are able to make their peace with one another. In the book these are thoughts and feelings the characters have but do nothing to change their relationship. Kitty sleeps with CT again after Walter dies but despises herself for doing it. She tells him that Walter was 10 times the man he is. Maugham was not a Hollywood ending style writer. The book informs you of WF and KF's thoughts.

  • @TooJubeJM1 It's not a Hollywood style ending and I was hacked off that Walter died as I wanted them to be back together.

This story has a LOT of potential to be made into a BBC style mini-series. If it was done by the same production company as the Jane Eyre 2006 mini-series.

Love love this film. Just such a shame there were no commentaries on the DVD.

  • yeah, i brought the DVD as well and no behind the scenes features at all, I was lucky enough to see only a few from a chinese special preview and you are right, they so could develop it into a BBC style mini-series

  • @TooJubeJM1 Thanx so much for answering my question. I can only say that if it is so, then I prefer movie over book. Sometimes it is quite a relief to actually see that (for a change) something is ending nicely in this ugly world of ours:)))

  • @MrWinestyle WS Maugham was not a Hollywood style writer. In fact the book is "unremittingly bleak". Walter and Kitty missthe opportunity to grow towards each other. We know their thoughts; what the film does is to allow them to do what they may have done if their lack of understanding of each other wasn't so profound.

  • @TooJubeJM1 yeah ,you're quite right...

I've read the book and I noticed that Somerset Maugham has a special

ability to describe so perfectly his characters' feelings...

He concentrates a lot on Kitty...how she manages to become from a

    shallow wife- a wise widow...

I liked both the book and the film...each of them have their charm...

  • Has anyone read the book and if so, can you give a description of how accurate the film is?

    Thanks.

    Love this film.

  • @Aulelia27

the book is just as good

i really dont want to spoil the book for you..there are a few differences..really..go and get the book ( the one with the movie poster cover) and have a blast reading it

    it equally kicks ass!

my parents will be taking me to southern china soon and show me all the places that they spent during their honeymoon..i'm fully pumped

  • @4485lolo , Thanks for replying with your thoughts. I saw that the book is on Amazon for less than 5 quid so I am definitely going to buy it the next time I get a chance.

Have fun in China! It looked so beautiful in the film.

  • It is a great book, just read it in French and then Chinese...equally beautiful although nothing beats the English original version...!

I do feel that they should add a bit more of the room confrontation scene...anyways, it's good to find someone else who is willing to dig deeper when viewing this film and book

  • @4485lolo The confrontation is just smouldering with embers of physical tension and just......wow, it is smoking hot! He is so upset with her.

If W was more animalistic, he would have taken her. And not to sound out of taste, Kitty may have liked it too......dont come after me lol!

  • @Aulelia27

you are absolutely right, it is just too hot beyond words

he is upset with her yet he still remains so self-composed- a true gentlemen

I just love your last comment, I'm sure she will think differently of him if he acted in that 'bad' way- one of my favourite quotes from the book and also reflected in the film- 'Like a historical character, I am too proud to fight'

  • @4485lolo I think in that moment, if he had acted that way, she would have probably rolled with it only because it would have been so out of character for him to even try and force himself on her.

Walter is too cerebral for that kind of action. He hit her where it hurt which was her heart just like how she betrayed him and his love.

I need to read this book asap.

  • @Aulelia27

somttimes hurting someone psychologically is more painful than hurting them physically

plus a gentleman never should put his hands on a woman or lady no matter how stupid she is

do read the book, i'm starting to read it again for the 7th time..woohoo!

  • @4485lolo That is definitely true! Hurting someone's feelings and being hurt is like being stuck in a whirlpool.

I think Kitty is a rough and tumble girl. She may have liked W taking charge but that would have been consensual. There is no way he would have done anything nonconsensual !

  • @4485lolo That is definitely true! Hurting someone's feelings and being hurt is like being stuck in a whirlpool.

  • @4485lolo Is it true that she (Naomi) doesnt fall in love with him (Edward) in the book?

  • @MrWinestyle Actually she is relieved when he dies,,,Walter doesn't forgive her in the book and she never did grow to love him.

  • Dont know if you just got my reply as YT wiped it argh! But yes I wholly agree that he is someone who is just too clever and intelligent to try and get her like that.

I am relieved they resumed their physical relationship though.

  • @Aulelia27

I do see some elements of Colonel Brandon and Marianne in these two gorgeous ppl

like the chinese saying goes- if a guy isn't bad then he will not be loved by a woman- silly really

perhaps people find those good guys to be too predictable, less thrilling or how Walter says it' a fool'

    regrets!

  • Much of the dialogue is lifted from the book. The main changes are that Walter and Kitty make their peace by resuming their sexual relationship in the film. In the book the two characters leave much unsaid until the point of Walter's death. Kitty asks Walter to forgive her. He sheds some tears but does not answer her. She sleeps with CT when she returns to Hong Kong and then returns to England to have her child at her father's home. Her mother has died. Unremittingly bleak.

  • @TooJubeJM1 , I'm going to give the book a go but I don't like the idea of her doing that with CT again. God, Kitty have some decency!

  • Much of the dialogue is lifted from the ook. The main difference is that Walter and Kitty do not get to make their peace with each other by resuming their sexual relationship or at all really. Waddington takes her to see the dying Walter and she asks Walter to forgive her. She notices two tears running down Walter's face but he does not respond. Later Kitty sleeps with CT, but hates herself for it. She returns to her father in England to have her child. Her mother has died.

  • um- why turn this into a politicalargument?

so what if he is an obama supporter?

shouldn't we just learn to accept those with diff views?

anywhos, back to the movie- i brought 30 tickets for my friends to see this film in china- i was disappointed that many chinese audience would rather watch bad silly local films than such epics like the painted veil- seriously people...!!! this film is the best

  • That's interesting that people in China would prefer silly local films, but then that is true for any country surely? The Painted Veil is a really good film and I love it but many in the UK would prefer silly films rather than this intelligent, interesting film. Having said that nearly all I have spoken to about it loved it.

  • @TooJubeJM1

Am i the only chinese who hate the local chinese film industry? compare the chinese films with other international counterparts, we make the most bs movies- crap storyline, big names and so called blockbusters but it is just ridiculing chinese history and not at all realistic..i'm perhaps the ionly one who is disappointed with the industry..hate the fact how people don't understand that blockbusters are not at all better than these films

    love it!

  • what is or isn't a good movie is soooo culturally based.

  • @sandradeeism

very true..which is why i guess people think that i am a traitor to my own culture..whatever

  • Thanx 4 postin this!!! He's SOOO adorable!

  • Comment removed

  • the lesson of this story...be a bitch, be a slag, have no personality but be a looker...and bag the the choiciest man. no fair

  • It seems to be true in real life as well...Sad how they married women off in the old days.

    Naomi Watts is really pretty

  • yes thank God we have moved on from those days but it still happens in many countries.......;(

  • "I think I improve greatly on acquaintance."

    "Oh, I'm sure you do..."

Just after proposing marriage? I love that ^^

This movie was such a surprise to me when I first saw it. I hadn't expected it to be so good :)

  • being a obama supporter makes him even hotter!

  • why is a supporter of obama hotter than someone who doesn't support him???

  • it doesnt, just makes them stupider.

  • makes who more stupid? the ones who support obama or the ones who think someone who supports obama is hotter than someone who doesn't support him???

  • the second one, its just a stupid thing to say.

  • I have seen this 3 times this week.

Seriously love seeing Edward Norton...Only flaw he has is he is an obama supporter.

    That can change !!!

  • I am certainly not an Obama supporter, but I do not believe that saying someone is 'flawed' just because they support someone is a something appropriate to say. What is someone said, 'oh, blackcatsoda is a great person, but he/she is flawed because they don't support Obama.' Obviously you'd be ticked off because you know that that is not a justifiable way for someone to judge you. You're an idiot for saying that. You should watch what you say next time, since this one is marked as spam.

  • Actually, I would not be ticked off as I know how some people are ignorant and just say things. As to Norton, he is a supporter for the wrong reasons and that hurts the country and that is the flaw.

Otherwise, I enjoy watching the eye candy.

  • thanks for posting

  • What is the name of the tune that Kitty is playing on the piano at the start; the one that is playing when she meets Edward Norton?

  • Oooo- it's good, huh?!? It's by a composer from the early 1900's named Erik Satie and it's called Gnossiennes No. 1. If ever there was music that sounded like the inside soundtrack of my brain it's the music of Satie. And it's the perfect choice for this film and the time period it's set in.

  • Edward Norton is definitely the 'thinking women's crumpet'..

  • in every movie Norton is just superb!!..one of the most talented actor and humble man ever seen. thank for uploading this movie.

  • he doesnt do alot of work, but what he does is great.

  • watched this a few hours ago on BBC2, have had Erik Satie in my head ever since
