The ending of this movie fucking sucks. It's like a Soap Opera. Totally makes the 90 minutes of your life before the ending feel like a waste of time.
Over art directed crap. Once a film loses some thread to reality so that the audience itself is not privy to what is going on it loses interest for me. Why not have the Beast from 20,000 fathoms attack the lighthouse. I would be thrilled and then the director can say, well, it wasn't real. Why depict total fantasy has just an alternate reality and not let the audience in? Gimme a bat creature or something. Then I can say, is that real? WTF?
Shutter Island is real masterpiece - great acting, directing, producing, everything. Some moments were even scary. Leonardo DiCaprio is real master (Leo acts even better than Johnny Depp). Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo were great as well but I don't understand why so many people found the ending unpredictable. I predicted the ending after first 20-30 minutes. This movie is masterpiece but not as unpredictable as The Others, The Game, Identity, Fight Club, Cube 2 or The Prestige
ok these guys are the reason i dont like looking at reviews. they dont come into a movie with an open mind. the guy in the middle admits this several times like in Alice and wonderland review. To me that immediately makes his opinion regardless of what it is null and void. Ben is a prick..... nuff said. the guy on the right is not as much of a douche as the other two but he is still a bit of a jerk.
Arrrrggghhhh....I didn't enjoy this review. This movie was so well done. It is not just another mindless movie that everyone has seen over and over again. It definitely deserves at least an 8, but I give it a 9/10. How could you not be satisfied by the ending. For me, the ending was obvious, but I think some people need to have the ending spelled out in black and white for them instead of using their mind to decide. I just saw Inception, and that was great too!
What was wrong with the ending? It was brilliant. He was sane but didn't want to live with the murders at his house and Dachau so he decided to take the lobotomy. The lighthouse at the end symbolized the lobotomy in a very eerie way. 9 out of 10.
@NReed404 He was no longer delusional. The intervention worked, and now he was just acting delusional so they would lobotomize him. His last line at the end is a dead giveaway, as well as the fact that we walked with them calmly without resistance.
I think these critics are nitpicking. I think Shutter Island was a great movie. Great acting, great direction, great story, great music, great twist at the end, an instant classic. Matt's critique is incoherent. He just talks about the ending being unsatisfying to him. But he never really articulates why. I think the movie is a 10! Anyone else agree?
@aimtrue45 i think the movie was better than they said, but they cant really go into whats parts were bad. they cant just spoil the movie to say which parts werent good
@aimtrue45 Exactly, critics are paid to voice their opinion, and not everyone has that same opinion. I believe Scorcese nailed it. Watching it the second time was almost as good as the first after I knew what clues to look for. Plus, the final flashback of him and his wife is so heart-wrenching. The direction was awesome.

IMO i thought dicaprio was exellent in this movie i hope him and sorsese make more movies cause hes become martins new deniro basicly oh and WHAT a soundtrack! blew me away
I just saw the movie, and it actually flew by for me. :S Loved the movie. Creeped the hell out of me too! Ive never felt so mindfucked by a movie afterward.
Scorsese packs the film with so many thrilling details. The cast's performance are excellent, it is an enjoyable movie...my friend watched it for free in HD quality at
In terms of the end, as a twist, it's weak, predictable, and cliched, but the body of the movie, the build up to that twist, is handled with such rich psychological imagery and atmosphere that in the end, I think it's a great film. On a second time through, I won't just go "oh, he's _____, that's why this is happening," but "oh, he's ___, so what does this piece mean, why is he seeing/thinking this or that, how do these pieces add up in his head?"
The Fog horn in the beginning is actually the third movement of Penderecki's 3rd symphony. The films score was almost (if not entirely) bits of pre-existing classical music, everything from John Cage to Alfred Schnittke to Max Richter to John Adams. I thought it was arranged to a wonderful effect thoughout (the symphony suggesting the fog horn and giving it all an air of ominousness being my favorite example). It reminded me of Kubrick's use of music.
I thought the movie sucked ass personally. Predictable ending and it just dragged on an on. These twisted endings are getting played out. Reminded me of Sitxth sense and a little of the Sam Rockwell movie Moon.
wow omg the movie was freaking confusing was he crazy message me ur opinion please im so confused wtf the was with would u rather live as a monster or die a good person was he saying he would rather die thinking he was good rather than living a monster.
I tried to be too much like the shining. To me it just doesn't measure up. It was OK though. I don't particularly care for Scorsese's outdated portrayal of black people in his movies. (or Tarrentino's for that matter) Every movie has some type of anti-black rant in it. We get it. You hate niggers. That shit is so fucking old already. But hey some people enjoy that shit.
I saw this movie yesterday and I LOVED IT! One of my top ten Scorsese films. Incredible acting, magical editing from Thelma Schoonmaker, outrageously good directing from Marty Scorsese and Robert Richardson's cinematography never dissapoints.
Shutter Island is an awesome movie. It makes you think. Many of those that say it sucked do not like the fact they had to think - they wanted something mindless.
I am happy to see TYT reviewing movies. What the Flick is a great show, keep it up! I trust their opinions after the sincerity demonstrated in the normal TYT show.
I'll be watching Shutter Island this weekend. Forget all the other critics!!
Ease up on ben, he's right. People fall in love with certain actors / directors, and support every movie they do even if it's absolute crap. (scorsese, tarantino, etc)
@Jesse9063: That's really interesting. I can explain that feeling of yours: Ben is a self effacing, smart, slightly awkward, funny and educated guy. This kind of person usually annoys douches. Solution: The douche is you. You're welcome.
He said, "I don't love Scorsese." That's as articulate, discerning and intelligent of a "critique," summarizing and view of a film I have ever heard. Truffaut could never discuss film as well as Ben. I mean, he said it was a good sandwich and never mentioned why. What more do you want? ;-)
@Malachai2012 What are you talking about? He's the best YT! HE reminds me of me so, I guess you and I wouldn't get along, would we? lol
Also, most people where disappointed with the ending, but I thought it was the perfect ending to this movie, because I hate movies that just go too over the top, they make it too dramatic, and to me, the best psychological thrillers are the ones where they keep it realistic while delivering suspense, so to me this movie was pretty much at the top of it's game.
@CodeofVideos Ha ha, I lived in a house with crazy step parents, I know how it is to live somewhere where most of the people are scary unpredictable dellusionals, I live in USA after all.
