  • Has anyone heard Dawn Upshaw do Haydn's Creation? It's stunning!

  • i know dawn

  • The third student has an outsanding voice. Who is he?

  • HA! she totally does look like Ricky Lake! how old is this video?

  • How funny is it that Dawn Upshaw once dated the grunge guitar guru Kim Thayil? Ok, they were 10 years old back then, but still, the irony...

  • Wonderful. Upshaw, so scholarly, speaking instead of pure inspiration. Fantastic advice throughout.

  • Upshaw simply is amazing--fantastic and wonderful! She goes inside and comes back out of everything she touches, both genuinely revealing whatever-it-is and yet also making it all her very own. These are extraordinarily lucky and blessed students.

  • This is amazing, incredibly helpful and the students are at the highest level. what an honour to be coached by Dawn Upshaw you can tell she just loves it, wish I could be there :)

  • Typical soprano-- can't shut up. :P

  • @drtmuir Can you shut up... though I am 13 and my voice is changing to lower soprano, alto... still!

  • Schumanns's "In der Fremde"!

  • Who's the charming guy at the end in the diamond sweater?:) He's so charmy:)<3

  • since when has Ricki Lake been singing opera

  • Ricki Lake sings Opera?????

  • i flipped on BBC2 in england one night , I had the sound down and Dawn Upshaw was on the screen singing, And i did have to double take as i honestly for a flash thought it was Ricki Lake

  • It's at Yale.

how weird. I initiatlly recognized the chairs, and then at 1:08, recognized two students with whom I went to school...

  • These students sang art songs, which Dawn herself has sung. (The Mirabel Song is on her first (of 3 ) Grammy award CD. The youngsters that sang for Mr. Milnes all chose opera arias beyond what they should be singing (except for maybe two of the kids). I wondered if they wouldn't have been better served singing art songs themselves for Mr. Milnes. Maybe he could have helped some of them more. I don't really know. But it's quite an exercise and great for the young singers, regardless.

  • I just had to watch this cli again after watching Sherrill Milnes give a master class to 6 young college students this past weekend.I think I would have been more relaxed singing under Dawn , although these students seem farther along in their singing development than most of the youngsters that Mr. Milnes had to work with for a short time. It certainly must be a great moment for young music students to sing under great singers like my Dawn, Mr. Milnes and others, like Carol Vaness at IU.

  • I would LOVE to work with her

I have a great teacher, but dawn upshaw is, ya know, dawn upshaw.

Working with Edda Moser would be fantastic too. lol

  • That second student talked WAY too much... Yeah, it was about time Dawn Upshaw said "sing the song" lol!!!

  • Where was this class?

  • who is this soprano?? When she finally sang, she was great! Nice talent!

  • To answer you question dmitrih1, this is Dawn Upshaw. Wonderful lyric soprano. One of the best in my opinion.

  • I was referring to the 2nd student in this clip that Dawn Upshaw was working with, but thanks for trying to answer my question.

  • Her name is Mary Petro. She now sings in the Met Chorus. Wonderful person and very talented singer. She actually won the Met competition years ago.

  • That girl's voice is a bit annoying.

  • Does anyone know what school this is?

  • Wow.she really says exactly so right on it.this woman is hat rare thing.a great performer and a really great teacher .I'm a pianist and whar she said was music not technique. How fresh it all seemed!!!

  • Dawn Upshaw has been one of my favorites. I first met her backstage in 1989 after doing Susanna in "Figaro" while 6 months pregnant with her now 17 year old daughter. I seen and talked with her several times since and my admiration for her as a singer, performer, and person is ever strong.

    Opera Buff 1935

  • This woman is one of my all time favorites! One of the most beautiful and expressive voices in the world of music....and I have always found her to be quite the cutie as well

  • Dawn Upshaw has been one of my favorite singers since 1989. I met her backstage at a performance of Mozart's "Figaro". She sang and acted Susannah while 6 months pregnant with her now 17 year old daughter. I've seen her and talked with her several times since then and my admiration for her as a singer, performer and person has only become greater over the years.

    Opera Fan 1935

  • Does anyone think that dawn upshaw looks like ricky lake here? LOL

  • Dawn Upshaw has a beautiful voice. Listen to Gorecki-Symphony no. 3. Conducted by David Zinman.

  • Indeed. 6 minutes into the 3rd movement, and one realizes that music really is a form of transportation. Breathtakingly beautiful.

  • Dawn Upshaw is so friggin' intelligent, I love her! Funny that all the young singers presented material that Dawn herself is known for singing. I thought the soprano was fabulous -- lovely chiaroscuro sound. And the "unmemorized song" is actually a huge, 10 minute work. So no, that's not tacky.

  • The whole cycle is 10 minutes long. However, the song that she performed is the third song and it is less than two minutes long. Yes, it is tacky.

  • Dawn Upshaw is brilliant. The Harbison cycle is a fantastic work.

  • tacky to bring an unmemorized song to a masterclass

  • It's not sooo bad... I've seen it done many times. It is a still a class, not a polished performance. It also allows the singer to make marks in their score.
