if you listen to post 1969-70,[ after he seen 'em,in concert, and they met ],all Buddy Rich's Solo's contain alot of Carl Palmer's original styles, however, the ever so ''Classy Palmer'' took this as a compliment...at the time '70-'71,a large group of ''Palmer &ELP Fans, took this as an outright theif, and insult, because,Rich, often critcized,''Progressive Rock Bands, including,''ELP'',and I,a fan of both, clearly ided with the ''World's Greatest Drummer's'' side,Mr.'' Carl Palmer''...
Yeah, I just read about Hendrix being interested and wanted to jam but he died before that could happen. Wow! I had never known that story until reading it on Wikipedica. In building my channel, I'm going one band at a time, and it's quite interesting going through the discography as I pick songs from albums. All these years and I just found out about the possibility of HELP today. lol Great stuff.
@probrojeffro I know! I think they had a date to jam all set up too! My friend and I joke that Hendrix died because the universe wouldn't be able to handle the music that HELP would produce
I think Emerson and Hendrix would have worked out quite well together.. Hendrix reportedly liked The Nice (Emerson's pre-ELP band) and jammed with Keith Emerson and Nice drummer Brian Davison on several occasions. Mitchell was considered for ELP (It would have been ELM; so was Ginger Baker, by the way, and Jon Hiseman). They probably would have worked well together. However, I don't think the group would have lasted as long as ELP did.
The sonic dynamics have been sadly lost in this reproduction. The original vinyl recording used to delight the senses. It's still an innovative piece of music though.
@peterman7000 I forget whether it was on the "The Birth of a Band" or "Beyond the Beginning" DVD, but Keith says he and Greg were in talks with Mitch Mitchell about him becoming the drummer for their, then, new band and Mitchell brought up the possibility of bringing Hendrix along. The band might have been H.E.L.M. There was a point when the band could have ended up as H.E.L.P. with Steve Howe, though. Quite a different sound that would have been...
Very tight but not loose. Still bloody good stuff, tell that to the kids today etc. Strange band really, all very wonderful musically but nothing whatsoever to say.
This is one of the best pieces of artistic work I have ever heard. This song is like a trilogy.First there's the fanfare for the army to encourage them to victory. The music sounds exciting. Then Palmer does the deed on the solo.Listen to it very carefully and you will hear mortar fire in the fast lane. Then he uses the cymbals to emulate the sound of distant explosions. The last part is the victory march. Man, you can see the tank rollin down main st. and all the happiness. Underated!
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of the game OGRE. A whole army against just one cybernetic Tank.... and its a fair fight! The end of this song just sounds like the OGRE surviving everything the army can dish out to it and still coming up to kick your ass.
In response to peterman7000; Hendrix was asked to "tour woth them, not join the band. ELP were the most prolific touring band of the 70s! The loved to play live! If you really wanna see Carl Palmer at his epoch, catch the "karnevil" video! And thay did this stuff night after night!
@iloverush123 no, blast beats are used by heavy metal drummers, very fast and loud and use a lot of double bass with little rhythmic variation or complexity. While this is very loud powerful drumming here rhythmically it evolves from a unique combination of rock and jazz drumming and varies greatly.
It was this exact piece which got me to pick up a pair of sticks and at least try to play drums. By forcing myself to keep up with CP, exactly 3 years to the day after I first pounded a phone book with a pair of Regal 2B sticks in time to this (and everything else ELP did) , I was playing real drums in a real band - albeit not playing ELP but playing professionally.
Great album that i bought when a new release in 1970 ; still their best work. Many of their later studio albums were pretentious and too flashy for me or self indulgent.Same with the band YES ; The Yes Album is unique and brilliant but susequent ones went too show-off-ish and bland for me with faultless technique but poorer and more boring songs and numbers
this is the best song they ever did. only wish they could have continued to make this kind of what amounts to Jazz Fusion before that term existed. they became so bombastic and pandering and banal compared to this joyous exuberant incredible jamming.
ELP music swept me like a wave and drowned me in its sea of fantastic rock music. From the day when I first heard ELP I was never the same. I started to love rock music which I thaught was annoying and stupid. And now I can't wait to buy another album or hear another great song. Rock on, ELP!!!
This is THE song that got me into drumming, and almost 40 years later (for me), I finally did a cover of it, to pay tribute to my all-time favorite band. And though my version of Palmer's solo obviously falls short, it's OK. It was a labor of love! Thanks for posting the original! (Hope it keeps avoiding the WMG police squad!)
@peterman7000 the world would have never been ready for this..this is why secret illuminati councils in conjunction with the Nixon administration conspired to have Hendrix assassinated through experimental bio-spore injections, leaving a corpse that had appeared to have drowned in its own vomit from the aftermath of an unsavory Vesperax overdose..
@peterman7000 ... late here but worth a visit. man,you have to wonder abt the story behind the idea. i think it the most unique concept in music, that i've ever ponder'd. my goodness, just how would Keith&Jimi and Carl work together. i don't see as much issue with Hendrix&Greg Lake.
damn ! .. the guitar&key's are both out-front in any case. i've only known it to work w/blackmore&lord and even then,i never really understood the relationship between the two artist's that would allow such ..
A really great song. I've probably heard it a thousand times and it never gets old, I never miss finding some clever nuance in it I haven't heard. This is what used to be on the radio in the early '70's, along with zillions of other great songs of all types. Nothing like that in today's corporate radio world, a real loss.
If some folks haven't heard ELP they haven't heard much of good music yet. Since 1975 I hold them in great esteem.Prolific in their times, great music and great band.
My brother had a maroon colored '67 Camaro that he bought used and that thing was a partay machine! It always smelled like beer inside and he would drive it around in the fields. We would see headlights bouncing up and down in the distance and say "there goes Dave". In 3 years I don't think he ever did any maintenance on it and it finally just died. When the tow truck came to haul it to the junkyard, the guy wanted to see if it would start. When he turned the key, the battery exploded!
Yeah, there's a real classic tune, a true epic in its way (certainly for its time), visually realized as only Aqua71 can. That debut album of their's really did set the tone for what was to follow, masterfully so.
