Do you know what I love about this - it's like even when the women touch each other isn't not intrusive or sexual it's all about feeling themselves and what the touch of another person allows them to feel themselves. Or at least that's what it seems like to me.
Great scene. I didn't realize this movie was directed by the same guy that wrote Fisher King, thus the dream-like dance scene. Either way, it works for me!!!
Very useful to have your main character on drugs if you want to include one of those "spontaneous yet heavily choreographed dance in the club" scenes. That was Gene Kelly's secret, apparently.
I love this movie!! So many of my friends never heard of it. Holly Hunter should have been nominated for an Oscar for this role. She was absoluetly PHENOMINAL!!!
This is a great scene in the movie...great movie, great cast! There is nothing like female energy and I don't mean that in a lude way. It's unique. We have our male energy and that's good, but I've observed women when they're together and they have an incredible connection with eachother, that we men could most definately learn from. Oh great song too. Rocks! Peace, : )
This is an amazing dance scene, so sensual and exquisite in its execution. Beautifully lit, fantastic costuming, beautiful women, great music and excellent choreography. Unquestionably my favorite scene from "Living Out Loud", one of my favorite Holly Hunter movies, another being, "Always" costarring Richard Dreyfus.
One of my favorite movie scenes ever from one of my favorite movies ever! How do I not own this movie? If you have not seen it, see it NOW! It says so muuch about not only freeing all those stereotypes that society propetuates but freeing one's self from all those inner barriers that prevent you from being who you really are. Free thy self!
Even if u'r straight I recommend u to have a glass of wine or two (or X or a lude or whatever ur choice - just to loosen up) & head out to such a club. There is something so liberating/freeing in being with all women; dancing, touching, feeling, laughing, watching, etc... I don't mean that in a sexual nature, however, it is pretty sexual. It's a very fun, enlightening, Great experience!!
It's a sweet and poignant scene in a great movie. I love the fact that towards the end she embraces her younger self, both for comfort and out of fear for what the future holds for her now that she's about to be divorced.
Take a quaalude and it will. I loved that movie. It has one of my favorite movie lines ever, "I mean the situation clearly called for me to attack him!"
@GIQUE900 mine is "just because it fell apart it doesn't mean it wasn't love at some point". that's what she said when when she was attacking him. i agree, he clearly deserved it.
@Not1OfUrFans Well I'm not saying it's a good thing, bc ecstasy is a highly illegal drug and not really good for you as most drugs aren't. But I can say it makes you want to touch everyone and dance and just really let yourself go and live life unlike you ever have.
Oh yeah! and the scene with Eddie Cibrian stripping down to his boxer briefs is not bad either. My only problem is that they cut down that scene, WAY TOO SHORT.
Great dance sequence, and unexpected within the movie. But unfortunately there's no Lesbian dance clubs like that in real life. They just made the Lesbian version of a Gay dance club. And I have not been able to find the Dance version of Brownstone's as featured on this scene, only the original. GREAT MOVIE, check it out!
Brownstone - If you love me! I think by the time she entered the bar.The "little pill" kicked in a slowed everything down. Its' the same song! She was ready to unwind, and jam!
If you haven't seen this movie Do. It's absolutely wonderful. Holly Hunter is wonderful and gorgeous as this character and Queen Latifah is spectacular. Danny DeVito gave his character some nuances- everyone is totally believable. You will love this sexy, pretty movie!
This is one of my favorite movie sequences as well, and the movie itself is an under-noticed gem. Holly looks great and the choreography is SO sexy - something that even a non-dancer like Holly can do and look smashing doing it! The song is one of my favs, too. All around terrific film making and I love how Holly's character embraces her younger self at the end of the sequence - very simple but eloquent statement!
It's interesting thinking back of this movie in the late 90's, this is a VERY powerful scene it shows how a woman can feel so lost in a commanding world and get lost in a destructive relationship and lose sense of self but in this small little scene shows how powerful she is and how much control she should or can have of her own happiness/life. This movie is one of the few movies i've checked out since, has expressed that idea in such a moving and emotionally powerful way. i was a kid back then.
This is my favorite scene from this movie. This, and, the massage scene with Eddie Cibrian of course! The dance scene just transitions is so compelling and emotional to watch and I have to give high praise to whoever choreographed this scene. It's no wonder I've seen Living Out Loud about a dozen times already.
A stunningly sexy sequence- with a gentle nod to "Big Spender" and musicals in general. Bob Fosse would be proud. And is that "En Vogue" on vocals? The song is gorgeous!
The song I believe you're referring to is "If You Love Me" by Brownstone. Great song, and a sleeper of a movie, in which I first learned Queen Latifah is a helluva singer. :)
OK. Thanks. I wasn't sure, but those harmonies are stunning. I can revise my statement to say that the sequence is a nod to En Vogue, the Fosse number "Big Spender," and musical films in general.
Dance sequences in non-musicals never worked for me, until this movie---EXCELLENT. Did anyone else notice the last person she dances with is actually herself as a teenager?
Excellent adaptation of real life crisis. Queen Latifah is so elegant~ why isn't she doing jazz more often??? I loved this flick, and have watched it over and over again. Bravo!
I love this part of the movie...awesome!!!! But, I don't get the part where the young girl goes up to her and they start to dance at the end. I never got that part...ANYONE KNOW WHAT THAT WAS ABOUT??? IT DRIVES ME CRAZY...
Yeah, finding herself as a girl actually. Earlier in the film she represents her before she grows up. So shes like embracing her inner child. Very cool. Glad you know now because it makes me teary at that part. Hey! See the movie, maybe?
I think that it was all about receiving and giving affection. I think she was receiving love and giving it through touch. She held the other woman and they just stood there in the moment.
Yeah, this is a great movie, definitely one of my all time favorites. And the Brownstone song is one of my favorites and I was so pleasantly surprised the first time I saw this movie and it came to that scene. Absolutely beautiful!! This is making me want to dig out the DVD now!
Oh. My. God. Does it get any better than that? Perfection. I swear I've reinacted that scene time and again on the dance floor; or was it the Grey Goose?
I have been a fan of this movie for almost a decade. This particular scene at "The Confessional" is arguably one of the best dance sequences in movie history. I met director Richard LaGravanese last year in New York, it was a real honor!
A must see movie, no way to understand this great scene otherwise. She is not gay, she is accepting herself in scene when she hugs young girl who is her at a younger age.
This was one of the best choreographed dance scenes in film history. It was simple, elegant, erotic and sexual. Anyone having enjoyed the dance floor alone would have loved to have been a part of such an experience. I must the mention, the music was to die for. Thanks for this one!!!
I remember this movie when it first came out. What I noticed on the big screen was this.... Holly was dancing with the single girl, and I saw the girl had the same tattoo as Holly. I really felt she was dancing with/accepting her younger self. I really liked that.
Much to my ignominy I have to admit that I just recently discovered this movie less than a week ago. This was/is an excellent movie and true to my fellow you tube viewer statements; this movie was overlooked. Well I'm looking now and I like what I see.
