THE ONLY TEAMS TO SCORE AGAINST THE GERMANS IN 2002 WORLD CUP THE BRAZILLIANS AND THE IRISH COME ON U BOYS IN GREEN STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS WHEN I SEE IT
i remember this goal so much, because my dad was holding my one year old sister at the time, and i just remember my mum's petrified face as my dad danced around the room. brilliant
@podgewalsh4 Richard Dunne didn't play at all you moron. Stop leaving retarded comments like that when you clearly don't know what you're talking about
@IsMiseAdhamh calm down I didn't say he played in the world cup I just said that he was in his prime! I personally would have chose him over Ian Harte any day of the week... Its just my opinion relax a bit
@IsMiseAdhamh I didn't know he played left midfield thought it was Kilbane in left midfield with Finnan Breen Staunton and Harte at the back? I'm just of the opinion that Ian Harte was a mistake like he missed the penalty against Spain and overall had a very poor tournament and by the way your not american so less of the soccer yeah? Im not trying to change the subject but is there really a need to swear in all your comments?
@podgewalsh4 You're a fucking retard. I say soccer because I'm a proud Irishman, and to me football means gaelic football, soccer means soccer. Okay? You're just trying to knit-pick now because you look like an idiot who thinks he knows something about soccer when he doesn't - which is exactly what you are. Without Ian Harte we mightn't have qualified, and he was decent in the tournament itself. Anyone can miss a penalty. Why don't you just crawl back into the cave where you came from you moron.
@IsMiseAdhamh I'm not knit picking I was just asking. Others would disagree about Hartes performance in the tournament even Wikipedia for example just look at Harte on wiki and Im aware he was vital to qualification but he was only ever useful for his free kicks an corners he was risky at the back . And saying soccer instead of football doesn't make you any more Irish than anyone else. Every comment you make just has more swear words and derogatory comments so I wont be responding.
Small observation: A similarity in Irish goals even over the decades...We complain about the long ball but when there's a big man to break it for Keane or other striker its the same result, goals. This goal for example is remarkably similar to Keane's goal v Italy in Bari in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign and the big man on that occasion was Caleb Folan.
i remember bein in a pub back home in fethard. keane gets the ball...everyone leaned forward towards the tvs.keane strikes it. silence. then eruption. never ever have i seen a goal being celebrated so wildly! hopefully we can do the same in poland.
My best footballing moment ever! Ive never felt that good watching a goal go in, or never will i dont think. Words cant describe how that felt, i thought he missed at first, then he went running off into the corner! Classic!
I was behind the goal for this, the best moment of my sporting life along with Cluxton kicking that point against Kerry. I'll never forget the noise and the atmosphere on that ball hitting the net. We had a stash of drink outside the stadium, went and got it and sang songs all the way Ibaraki to Tokyo. The 500, yes that's Five Hundred, German fans at the game were no banter, they said we didn't deserve a draw. I've lived there twice, they didn't quite understand what had just happened: magic.
God we ridiculed Mick McCarthy and the way we played, but looking at the dross Trap makes our lads play now, maybe we were wrong all along? Can't fault the lads for effort though!!
@shaneflynnflynn mick mccarthy was our best manager, the media and all the roy keane fans turned on him when the euro qualification started, it was disgraceful the way he was treated
This was the best day of my school life. A packed classroom all waiting in entire anticipation. And the flick on from Quinn and the finish from Keane, the whole room want mental. Never forget that day
Niall Quinn was so key in that Republic equaliser flicking the ball in the space behind to the two centre halves, Robbie's run was perfect and he did the rest.
Pity we couldnt make it to the last WC. Would have made some more historic moments for sure. Ah well Armenia Tuesday. Draw and we're in the playoffs. Again...
I was there - behind the goal, and I couldn't believe it went in. But it did, and the rest was history. Keane and Quinn are legends but lets not forget how hard Damien Duff worked that day - he really established himself on the world stage and let every one know just what a quality player he is
@MrFeckinEejit Damien Duff really did excell in that tournament and its great how nearly 10 years on, he is still huge part of the Republic's quest to reach another major tournament, which i think they will, after being so badly cheated by the French two years ago.
World class player. Glad to have him playing for LA Galaxy. What a goal he scored today in our regional chamions league today. He could have had a double, but the ref disallowed his second goal for an "offsides position"
Lol 7.30pm German time, I remember being in a bar in Ireland watching this at 6.30am in the morning so I think our friend in New York is correct about 1.30 am there.
Well that's a lie, because this match kicked off at 7.30pm in Germany, meaning it would have been 1.30pm in new York. Telling lies to make it sound nostalgic?
@mattsobr1993 He's not telling lies, it was an afternoon game kid, fact! Was doing my English junior cert exam, remember calculating the right time to ask to go to the toilet to get the half time and full time score and the score midway through the second half as well, Germany's only an hour ahead of Ireland not 6 hours so it couldnt have kicked off in Germany at 7.30 PM. Google it, wikipedia it, do whatever ya want... was an afternoon kick off....
fremember watching this in new york city in the wee hours of the morning...as an irish-american this was a good tourtament for me as the americans mad ethe quarters and ireland made the round of 16, fully deserving to go to the last 8 aas they truly were better than spain on that day-.but when ur a small country liek ireland you cant afford to miss penalty's against spain-still wonder what would ahve happened if, Roy Keane, who at the time was undoubtedly the worlds greates def mid. hadnt quit
I was visiting ireland from america in 2002 and I had the privalege of watching this goal from an Irish pub. I will never have a better memory. Watching your country get behind him was amazing. I will always be a fan of ireland! From an American.Only 1 Keano :)

This is one of my fondest ever school memories, 300 of us in the school gym waching this on the big screen. When Keane scored everyone went mad even the headmaster was jumping up and down like a mad man. Good luck in L.A
I remember this, Word got through that Germany was up 1-0, I was in my primary school classroom & we begged our teacher to put the last few minutes on for us on the radio, and after much persuasion she eventually did.. within 20seconds of us finding the station Keano struck with the equilizer and the whole classroom erupted.. its funny looking back now, but my god, what a magical moment! Truely proud to be Irish!
@stonersid Ireland insults the world by their existence? I've never heard so much bull shit in my life. You're the fucking insult. You fucking hypocrite.
@fdppqpaew I'm Irish and I found this comment hilarious to be honest!!! It's so stupid you have to laugh at it! fdppqpaew you're such a troll ... would you ever get off the computer, finish wanking and squeezing your spots and go get a girlfriend!! Or any friend for that matter... actually, maybe you should just find yourself a potato.
Ah brilliant! My old man let me take the day off school that day and we all watched the match in my next door neighbours house with all my uncles. I've never seen so many grown men cry! Great memorys of that World Cup

@stonersid Ireland insults the world by their existence? I've never heard so much bull shit in my life. You're the fucking insult. You fucking hypocrite.

@SBXXChampions i think you misread what i said. i made no insult towards anyone , or any nationality, i was merely wishing an idiot an early death
stonersid 7 months ago
@stonersid But you don't wish death on anyone. Only if they severely injured or even killed a family member or friends of your's.
