  • is shit your favoroute word?

  • Good to know that there is a fix for this. I'll have to try it. Same thing, I played this once, worked fine. It's been sitting in the box, untouched for 2-3 years, finally took it out for a spin and I got scan-lines gallore on the left eye. Sucks!

  • Great video and solution. How did it go with the other Virtual Boy? Also was thinking of using a hair dryer instead of the oven. What do you think?

  • my right eye is PERFECT yet my left eye will most of the time show nothing. every once in a while lines will flicker. and one time it showed up completely. is it safe to just repair the left eye alone or should i do just both of them for good measures?

  • fuck yah thank you so much for this vid, I bought one on ebay an it didnt work now its perfect!

  • i'd recommend using a hair dryer on the parts instead of using your oven. if i had my VB with me, i'd check to see if I can get the same result with a hair dryer, as I'm dead on the right eye. and like yours, it's just been sitting there for months, but all of a sudden, it's works 50%

  • I purchased a bit that works 6 years ago on ebay. Did they stop selling them?

  • @jonnynewmonic

i dont know i never looked i just made my own.... im sure you can find one somewhere. just dont have a link sorry man

  • I still can't find a game bit that is long enough without modifying it like you've done in the video. Has anyone found one yet?

  • @Buapo

i had to dremel a regular bit on the edges to make it circuler and cut a line on the top for a screwdriver. my dremel gets used all the time i def suggest buying one for all types of reasons. with it you can do the mod i did.

  • @Buapo yes sir, I found mine on ebay. Extended 4.5mm gamebit.

    ebay.com/itm/4-5-MM-3-8-MM-NINTENDO-SEGA-SECURITY-GAMEBIT-TOOLS-/170523099971?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b3f80343

  • I just repaired my VB using this video and 1st test gave me 100% visibility. No scan lines. Thank you very much.

  • when i opened up my virtual, one of those video wires was already disconnected from the video motherboard. what do i do, do i just heat it up then put the wire to the motherboard.

  • where would i get a game bit?

  • @chunkydcaveman eBay has a ton of listings. Type in "nintendo gamebit". You can also make it if you're handy with a dremel tool. If not, go on eBay and get the 4.5mm. Most sellers on eBay sell the 3.8 and 4.5 gamebits together.

  • @sskats thanks the next part is fixing the sound

  • Freakin sweet! It worked for me! 1 min @ 275 degrees! My ribbon wanted to bend the opposite direction though. Thanks man! You saved my system!

  • cheapo design of the LED board. I would have used solder instead of glue. is there a way to output the video from the VB to say a TV? I know it wont be in 3D but at least it's playable.

  • @coondogtheman1234

i dont think this console would be capable. in order to mod a console for something like svideo you would need to tap into a luma and chroma signal or composite signal. considering this is more like a handheld with its components i dont see a way to output the video without a custom circuit of some sort if any. not worth it to even start to figure out if its possible. good question though!

  • @dankss

I actually saw another vid after I watched yours where someone did just that they built a custom circuit to adapt the video from the console to standard composite video and had it showing it on a TV. Try "VBTV Virtual boy to TV adaptor" to the right by the user pdaderko.

  • @dankss It is possible. Check out planetvb (type it into google). Those guys are die hard Virtual Boy fanatics. Anyways dankss awesome video. My virtual boy has a minor issue in the left eye and I was worried about the oven method. Obviously it works. Thanks for the up.

  • Thnx a bunch for this man

  • Seems like it's just a temporary fix anyway, the glue won't hold this time either. Soldering it is the one permanent solution that will let you close it up and never have to open it up again - for that reason. The other end of the cable can also be a problem, just by loosening an re-inserting that can solve problems. Measure every connection with an ohm-meter to check the connection.

  • Not the only way, dremeling off the middle of the tip of a flat screwdriver will work just fine - and is a quicker modification. Leave two "horns" on the tip that fits in two of the indentations of the screw - done.

  • Extremely helpful video dude. Can't wait to try it on a broken console I'm getting.

  • would you consider selling your modified game bit?

  • @joltmasta

sorry man i cant do it... if you really need one mail me it and ill modify it for you.... just pay for shipping.

  • attempted a fix like this on mine and the replacement I bought with scan lines and it works both of my virtual boys are 100% functional now thank you for the video.

  • @BlasterMaster031

great!!!! im so glad i could help man.... game on.....

  • Your video has been very helpful wish i would ahve seen this before I bought a replacement for the one ive owned for 15 years but i will be attempting to repair it tomorrow using this method

  • so you're using heat to re-activate old glue?

Have you tried a blow drier or professional heat gun instead of the oven? I'm thinking it might work better--you would actually be able to apply heat exactly where you need it, and you'd have more control over temperature as well..

Have you tried this? If so, how's it work?

  • Nice to see you take a half baked idea, bake it twice and turn it into a solution. and I thought KanagiKGA was the only retro-gaming youtuber using the oven. Great fix and great inginuity to resolve that problem.

  • @woodengamer

thanks for the kind words man.

  • Awesome!

  • Nice tutorial man, thats great, i am subscribing now, thanks!

  • great vid man! you could actually make a game bit with just a flat head screwdriver, its what i use to open all my stuff, i dont need bits and two different tools, i have a vid of it if you wanna make one yourself! its real easy and takes like ten mins man! take care!

  • @wesgrosscustoms

i actually made one but its still impossible because still remove these particular screws since you can see them because they are in to deep....

  • @dankss cut a line in the end to use screwdriver

  • Excellent work dude,im going to favorite this for future reference.

    Baking ribbon cables,whatever next lol.

    I reeally want a virtual boy *-*

  • Incredible fix. I will never use it, but you da' man.

  • @wip3outguy7

you never know, you may find a "broken" virtual boy at a garage sale for 10.00 then you may use it =)

  • @wip3outguy7 Hmm... I don't know. I value my eyes being able to see red in the color spectrum. Maybe now that you have two, you should do a color change mod to blue or another color that's less strenuous on the eyes... and show us how!

  • @wip3outguy7

Is there such thing as one color being more strenuous on the eyes than another?

  • Great work. That was a pretty crazy ass fix!!

  • @futurematt5

lol thanks man.... i figure you should be aware of this since youre virtual boy is a new prized addition to your collection and this could happen to yours in the future... I hope not but theres always a chance

  • @dankss ha ha you're the man bro... if I need to I know to get that oven ready for those shit fried ribbon connectors!! BTW you gotta check out Vertical Force, if you ever get a chance, it's pretty good, apart from the headaches ...!

  • great job bro!!!

  • @elcheapouno

    thanks man

  • wow i am NEVER fixing my f**king VB hahahaha im not good with sh*t like this lol

  • Cool vid man... I think this also applies to the Sega GG's LCD where its ribbon is soldered directly to the mobo. Someone actually suggested that we use hair dryer to slowly re-heat up the solders (w/o burning other vital parts). But i've not tried that yet. Damn i need an oven! lol

  • @PhatPhunk

    @PhatPhunk

i can see the gamegear having the same issue.... That perticular piece wouldnt be able to go in the over though lol... I wouldnt even sugest a hair since the hot air could potentially ruin the screen.... I still cant believe i fixed that dam virtual boy lol

  • @dankss Opps.. I forgot to congratulate you too! My bad! Well done man.. sure feels damn good to revive a 'dead' system :D
