What makes you assume that comparing Depeche Mode with Tom is justified? Of course the song will sound 'better' to you from the original band because you already have prior experience to the original material. It's unfair to be comparing covers with their respective source.
It's called a 'cover' for a reason. Covers are not meant to steal. Covers are meant to pay tribute.
