and hypothetically, lets say that we know absolutely nothing about Naousa's history... what is so bad about this performance? other than the uniformity and choreography which was creted specifically for this "show", what is so different and wrong about it?
@manasisdancegroup WHATS WRONG? ARE YOU SERIOUS? I cant begin to tell you how many things are wrong. these dances which you are butchering have specific steps and styling from the region of Naousa. this over choreographed garbage wouldnt stand a chance competing against true folkdance troupes . YOU call your selves a school of greek dance and culture, SHOW ME!!!!!!! learn what your dancing .
@georgeellas ... thanks george for the offer to compete. we only compete with professional dance groups, not social clubs whos interest lie purely in maintaining traditional folk. we occasionally like to be creative. again, thanks for the offer but we respectfully decline.
@manasisdancegroup Social clubs? LOLOL we run the FDF greek folkdance competion 176 troupes with over 4000 dancers most advanced troupes compete as well as perform all over northamerica as well as in Greece. I have studied both at the Ellikion Ellinidon of Athens as well as for Dora Stratou! If you ever want to learn the Dances properly and not be ridicouled by the Greek comunity on Facebook then let me know, as for competing ,your troupe would be laughed off the stage sopls savethesnide remark
@georgeellas thank you again for your interest. i wish you luck organising the FDF, i have seen many videos of this event in the past, and irrespective of geographical inconveninences, we would rather not participate in such a competition where an organiser would ridicule and belittle the efforts of any cultural group- which in your opinion may be accurate or not.
@manasisdancegroup I am sorry if i hurt your feelings but you asked what was wrong and when i told you tried to be snide in your response, if you dont want feedback from your performances , then in the future dont ask for peoples critiques on your videos. True art stands the test of time and our dances and culture are just that and more. We both live abroad and in this day and age when the world is trying to become a melting pot , We are the Vanguards for our culture our history.
@manasisdancegroup I believe if you live abroad and you claim to promote Greek Dance and Culture then it is your responsibility to do just that. Villages that have withstood wars occupation and time have succumb to the MTV generation and are slowly dissappearing. It is great for our youth to be proud to be greek but they have to know why. If you dont understand why i get upset or why you are getting backlash from the greek community on Facebook then i feel sorry for your students.
@manasisdancegroup Save the creative BS for the tourists that have know clue of what you are doing, You use traditional Music wear traditional clothing and you call yourselves a school of Greek dance and Culture , and then you are amazed at the backlash you get? Call yourselves An Interprative greek dance group and drop the culture from your title because you are not following culture and definately not tradition.
@manasisdancegroup Excuse me but someone must show you the original dances immediately.... I am from Naoussa and it's embaressing for me to watch something like this!!! This is not our tradition and if you like to show something about greek tradition make sure that you perfom it in the right way.... This is something more than embarassing truly....

@PoseidonGRE Oral traditions, not books. Some say Mbelouki is another word for yanitsaros. The town stood up as one against the Ottoman pedomasoma when they came to take the boys.
@IanHunedoara8 I know the history.Basicaly the local tradition says that "prosopos" (the mask) represents the enslaved hellinism(that's why is white=dead and has the anatolian sign on the forehead) the jenissars. The red chicks represent the resurrection of Hellinism that will come through the slavery. The name of the custom was selected to avoid the prohibition of it by the Turks. The Naousians often complained for the name of it,but it was a nessesary "bad thing".The masks had tiny eyes and mouth
@IanHunedoara8 so that noone could recognize the one inside of the mask. Thus Greek revolutionaries could communicate and organize their activities during the days of the custom. The chronological and the season"location" of the custom shows the high possibility that the masks come as an idea from an ancient pagan custom. But maybe the first motivation was just what you said, and later the custom took its foremost symbolism.
OK my dear friends you need to learn something about history, they are suppose to be 453 coins, for the years uder the turks, the mask is made with melted wax, the colors, have the following meaning, white the color of the death, red the color of life,
You should be careful with making claims like that. Naoussa is a heroic town i agree but you cannot say it is the "only" one. Many towns have a part in history where they stood for what they believed in against pursecution. Sparti for one. I'm not making reference to the movie alone, but look at Spartan history and how they trained their men to become warriors. In the end, Greeks then, just as Greeks now, you will find, stand up for what they believe in and are willing to fight for it.
@TazzGreg No, no, no ,no....Naoussa and Messologgi are the only Heroic towns in Greece... This ''name'' was given by the goverment to these two towns only because of the sacrifise during the war against Turkish. Sparta's heroic actions are from the ancient times and it's a different thing!!!
the men whear masks because they hid there identity from the turks they were usualy wanted, also the masks are painted with red wich was made with blood, because they were worriors fighting the turks. there vests were made of 400 coins symbolising 400 years of ochupation. i mean its really intence and excellent

The masks represent Mambelouki-elite Ottoman force. It's to teach children that Greeks are not afraid of enemies, no matter how scary looking.

it is a tradition to wear these masks.
In addition Naoussa is the only Heroic Town of Greece
because of the peoples brave actions (To get drown instead of surrendering to the turks at the war between Greece and Turkey)

Argos fought to the last against the Turkos in 1500 -how can you say only Naoussa was heroic?
IanHunedoara8 2 years ago
I meant heroic as recognized by the greek state as an honour (a title). Like soufli and like messologgi is a holy town.
Krotidas 2 years ago
LOOL - I think you mean Souli instead of Souffle'.
