What a wonderful, elegant, and practical aircraft. May sound silly but it makes me think that if we didn't have A-10's, we'd stll be using Skyraiders to this day in Afghanistan!
@valcan321 Thank you. Did they continue to use that same type of engine on the Skyraider right into and through its career in Vietnam? If so, did they salvage and use engines from WW2 era B-29's or did they manufacture new ones based on the old design. Were there modern updates added to the engine as time went by or did they remain a design that would be familiar to a WW2 era mechanic?
@mwp62 Well the engine was originaly from the the B-29 the A-1 used the same engine as it was being developed around the end of the war. Over time the engines were upgraded i believe as were several other features. I'm pretty sure a WW2 mechanic would feel just fine with the A-1 through out its life except for the electronics.
OK, I LOVE any 50's Blue Navy airplane and the Skyraider is one of my favs, HOWEVER, LOOSE the first 6 minutes of this video. If you want to watch it, jump to the 6 minute mark and don't waste your time - or go get some coffee and come back. Beautiful airplane.
Great plane with a great record. We flew those in nam to good effect.
Just a note on the video production. A little more editing would be suitable and try to use a tripod more. I realize you can overlook these details but this plane deserves the best production you can muster. Thanks.
I saw this plane on Great Planes on the Military Channel about a year ago. I recorded the episode and watched it several times. The Skyraider is a beautiful machine!!!
God, what a terrific sound!!! I can imagine being on the deck of a carrier in the Pacific - sun on my back, steaming into the wind and a half dozen of these aircaft rumbling away waiting for launch. That's got to be better than sitting at my laptop everyday!!!!
My dad flew the AD-3 Skyraider in Korea. He flew off the deck of the Bon Homme Richard CV-31. VA-923 was his squadron. He was the squadron XO. He loved that plane. I remember him saying that plane would "climb like a homesick angel."
Hope this gets to you. I know it's been a year since your post, but had to answer. I was on board the Bonnie Dick, Oct. 58 to July 59. Those damn AD props used to scare the hell out of me!
@TerryOS My dad was in the ESSEX during Korea. He was an AMC and was in charge of a crew that patched up the bulletholes the pilots brought home from Korea.
Man what a great idea stick a B29 engine in a single engine airframe and viola you have a single seater that can pack a B17's bomload while flying 40mph faster.I absolutly love watching the AD/A1s at oshkosh as unlike some of the rarer warbirds the AD pilots arent afraid to toss their machines about the sky.The part of the demonstration I have the most fun watching are the steep dives and equally insane climbouts that pilots put this huge plane through.
My all time favorite aircraft! My father flew ADs in the Marine Corp in the 50's. When I win the lottery my first purchase will be a "Able Dog"! Thanks for posting!
That looks like an absolute blast to fly.

It doesn't look like it needs very much run way in order to take off.

@mwp62 No not really the engine was actucally the same as the B-29 engines almost 3,000hp. Could lift its own weight in bombs.

Good thing it didn't take that long to get them off the decks of carriers.

Fast fwd to where he lets the wings down, fast fwd again to where he takes off and its a great video.

The truly magnificent SPAD - what a glorious sight and sound. No wonder her pilots adored her - the last great piston engined fighter bomber.

Wow! I love it! But, you better have stock in an oil company to afford the fuel consumption to fly one of these warbirds!

isn't it called the A-1 Skyraider?
warsman22 2 years ago
AD is the original designations from the 50's when the paint job is suppose to portray. A-1 wasn't used until the 60's during the Vietnam war.

I would imagine...that flight deck looks pretty scary in general. My dad had five boys and he called us his own personal "airedales"

In Air Force markings you could call it a Sandy. In 1950's Navy and Marine Corps blue it was an "Able Dog"
