  • The most important thing that Western parents should learn from Asian parents is not a focus on test scores or paper qualifications, but a concern for their children's success and performance, and a willingness to support and finance them. I know that my parents have made many sacrifices to send me to good schools and provide me with opportunities. Ultimately, the result that should be focused on is how well the child lives their life, not how many A's they get.

  • As a young Chinese man, I must say that "results-oriented" is not the right word to describe an educational system focused on test scores. Test scores are meaningless by themselves. They are a tool with which to judge a person's ability to recall and analyze certain material. However, they say nothing about how this knowledge is retained in the long term, or applied to useful things. Furthermore, if you are studying 16 hours a day, you are likely being too inefficient about it.

  • very good 101 east, will be sharing this around

  • what is the name of the persons youtube channel at the start of the vid?

  • now I'm really curious as to how the lazy-ass Finns manage an education better than most of these asians. very little standardized testing and after school tutoring, that's for sure.

  • If they are the extreme in intense discipline, I think we might be on the opposite end of the continuum. Honestly, America needs more discipline in education. There were quite a few graduates from my high school who shouldn't have graduated for reasons such as not being able to even communicate in English well. An extreme style of upbringing may or may not be good, but steps towards a more disciplined and strict education system would not only be ideal but crucial to this country's future!

  • what i dont understand, why is it have to be more ab. parents then the kids. yes we get it, it gives parents braging right, my kid is better then u kid and by extension see im such a good parent bc my kid is accomplished this and that and im better then u. Dont see why the girl couldnt tell us about her accomplishments. her dad seems like he got his sex confused.

  • whats the cost for a nation? Id say limited. populace is obedient and those countries dont have any demographic problems. young working force who work a lot. i dont see problem.

  • great mini-documentary

  • ... and are you happy... NO!

  • Tiger parenting? Hahaha... It should be yellow (excluding Japan) monkey parenting.

  • i think the most powerful thing to learn is working with others and have others work with you and sharing and caring and thinking and planning together.

  • @damania those values u mentioned, apply more for Asian coutries, I think. In fact, In Japan u cannot be succesful working for corp, if u too individualised on u succes

  • too much indoctrination! independent thought in a school is a oxymoron. ciritical thinking can't be taught and if u criticize too much teachers, administrators, and govn't officials will get offended and you'll end up in the gulag.

  • @damania exactly. in fact, stand. edu.memorising is taught to suppress any critical thinking. I think its hurmful for elementary school. it suppresses childs natural ciriosity and wanting to learn. also kids think out of the box standard edu suppresses it too. to be a doctor, lawyer, engeener u have to do tons and tons memorer. buut thats later

  • It's all Greek to me.

  • 4:30

    I hate you.

  • When everyone is excellent. No one is.

  • atleast in the west, if you end up unemployed, you get a cheque from the govt every month to help you out but in most of Asia, that's non-existant...if you're unemployed, you're own on your own...NO homeless shelters(to sleep in at night) or No soup kitchens(to eat free food at)...Being poor or unemployed in Asia is not easy! It's tough!! It's easier to be poor, unemployed and homeless in Western countries than in Asia.

  • lol 4:41 I thought that was her mother

  • @jbags84

    lol. Me too. omfg!!

  • Asian society(not just east asia, even south asia(e.g. India, Sri Lanka) is very hyper competitive . I think the competitive spirit arises out of materialism(let's not deny that)..the definition of success is tied up with money(how much of it you are able to make) and money is tied up with your profession and profession is tied up with your educational achievement. also, welfare doesn't exist in Asia so you're own on your own! No govt handouts! So doing well in school is crucial to your future

  • good report al jazeera..though this was focused on chinese in hong kong. it's a bit similar in India too...every year, after the gruelling BOARD exams, one is bound to read or watch a news report about some o kid(or kids) killing themselves out of disappointment for failing the board exams. the board exams determine what college one gets into. that's why. but that doesn't mean all indian(or even chinese, i'm sure) parents are super demanding of their kids. there are many cool relaxed parents 2

  • @heomak sorry not in India or China theres no cool relaxed parents

  • @dharmaatdawn i'm indian and my parents are super chill..i was C student in high school....my mom always encouraged me to do better..but there was never any pressure..if there was, i'd probably have done better..the last time i got a tutor(outside of school) was in 7th grade and that was because i was failing Math(yeah..i suck at math still). it wasn't forced on me. i needed it in order to go to the 8th grade so i suggested tutoring to my parents. don't generalize dude. it's dumb

  • Suicides, bad health, zits and generally weird geeky personalities are a few side effects

  • I bet these guys masturbate a lot and will be virgins into their late 30s.

  • @MoronHunterD just like you?

  • @krazzed101 NO .. just like you .. b/c I know your real name is HandCOCK

  • @MoronHunterD

yea, Asian parents are quite strict on their children's relationship. Maybe early 20s before they can have relationship. Also, don't use that nerd cant get laid mentality to think about Asian. Having top grade is hotter to girls than being in a soccer team.

  • @leeo268 nice stereotyping. there are plenty of American Asians that a not nerds. who dont just study 17 h /day, who in fact rebeled from their parents dominance. Asians in Asia obviously have a different culture, as for having top grade is hotter for girls then a soccer player. ok, keep telling u that. we talking ab having well rounded personality. if all u do is study thats not hot. To balance study and social relatinships, u personal passion thats hot

  • It's too stressful to be studying in Asian school like seriously coz I almost gave up on my studies due to a lot of factors

  • Creepy.

  • Ha, them goofy gooks.

  • @youngbuck189 you're an idiot.

  • Getting basics right.. knowing how to make the right decisions and ability to think on your feet social skills.. and failure are some of the things that allow for excellent individuals... imagine being afraid to make mistakes.. and then striving for perfection,,, what kind of boring life would that be.. my 2 paise.

  • @pdadhwal yes thats crazy, thats not life. its more like u living in u head. it leads to many thinks unability to make desions, always questioning u, inability to feel relaxed and good about u life. its paradox, if u dont fail u dont learn. but when so much rides on not failing ( and be top of the top) it can lead to disaster for individual.in Japan, they have the highest suicidal rate in developed world. in Japan, the couples dont have sex(bc very long work hours and lots of stress)

  • been there, done that. left 5 months of torture n i'm out of this asian hell

  • Too bad school doesn't always mean education. I know University graduates who are clueless about most things, how does that make them a better person?

  • It is NOT ironic but INSTRUCTIVE that the guy who makes tons of money --- from less educated parents who are willing to slave to pay over $100/hour to specialized tutors --- from teaching OTHER parents' kids, on how to conjugate & do appropriate diagramming sentences DOES NOT, himself, believe subjecting HIS OWN DAUGHTER to the same thing.

His kid's schedule is still highly rigid compared to some Westerners; but he shields her from the EXACT things he is PAID to do to other kids!

  • I'm a university student in S.Korea and the pressure to compete is immense. You can't keep up with this Korean students!!!

  • Education and doing well in life are two different aspects..if you want to live under pressure of others you will never get what you wanted..life for your dreams not someone elses..these chinese people eat too much snake and they become poisonous..lol!!

  • stress is all in the mind. just accept failure in your studies and move on. Don't blame the elite education system, whether in USA, India, China, Japan, Korea and Singapore. If one cannot compete in the academic arena, just move on. If the parents feel sad, then they are adults and have to accept it sooner or later. so what the media portray the harshness of the education system is purely subjective. many of us, poor or well off students have benefited greatly in this meritocracy system.

  • Go on. Study like people with no life. Where will that get you in 10 years time? Will you find a good job? Probably yes but will you succeed in life? Will you completed your life's desire? And will you be able to communicate well or maintain good physical health?

  • I know well what are they talking about, the problem is that with such a huge population competion is absolutely brutal, so if you want to have any chance of having access to higher education then you must to sacrifice your time and study, that's why many parents prefer to send their sons and daughter to study abroad:)

  • @isarathai good points. Also u have to have money to be able to afford sending u kid abroad. irrespective, of all the points u mentioned.

  • @dharmaatdawn Life is cruel, if you don't hav money and you don't have the grades, then......;)

  • LOL @The principal's speech ..best interpretation by Russel Peters! :D

  • THis is wonderful AlJazeera, this was a heart warming story, thank You guys for showing Us this. It's heart warming because there's hope for kids that may be falling through the cracks in society instead of telling them to commit suicide if they're not good enough. Take Care People.

  • Not all asian parents are like that. I'm a Chinese living in Singapore and my parents give me quite a lot of freedom. Only a few of my friend's parents are actually that bad

  • @noelchan127 really ? let me quess u parents are loaded and u a free to search u personal happieness. But i dont know much about Singapore. were u born in Singapore or China?

  • @dharmaatdawn Yeah I am free to do anything I want. They do tell me about the importance of getting good results but it's totally up to me whether I want to work hard or not. I'm born in Singapore :)

  • im gonna raise my child tiger style too. but not too strict though, they will have more spare time for developing social skills and doing less intellectually challenging things.

  • @darkhabsburg useless ...success is not determined by competition..it is determined by uniqueness...if your idea is unique you stand out..not chasing the asses who got idea..guess your chinese parents were wrong about life..i feel sorry for you!

  • I don't have kids but it's quite amazing the difference in mindset between the eastern and western kids. The east has the drive and attitude that the west had when they were the industrial powers.

  • Comment removed

  • Chinese parents are too demanding..looks like as if they are the boss of the kids!!:P

  • @alienkishorekumar parent is the boss of their kid.

  • @Abbadon380 I can relate but in the Philippines they wear you khakis
