However, I do not think most Americans have anything resembling even a shred of a conscience, so we must be prepared to do what is right, despite the fact that we will almost certainly lose in this battle. We must do what is right for its own sake, not because we expect everyone else to follow us. Hedges says that we may lose if we step outside the mainstream, but that we will nevertheless salvage our integrity and self-respect by doing so.
However, from a realistic standpoint, what is needed is civil disobedience, the courage not to conform and comply with what we are told. This civil disobedience must not take the form of murder and destruction of property, however; the military is ever ready to declare martial law and kill us if we should resist violently.
Above all, what is needed is for people to be taught VALUES in schools, and be required to practice these values - values like charity, community service, honesty, altruism, compassion and sacrifice. Religions MUST teach these values in a life-supporting manner instead of teaching empty and hypocritical dogmas with the intent to promote war, racism, hatred, etc. Our crisis is a moral crisis above all else.
@KhagarBalugrak And religion must not be the arbitrator of the moral values, because altruism, the moral system of religions, has not produced anything better than the reasoning of the individuals for their best interest, and the interest of the society.
There needs to be massive regulation of the economy by the government that protects the rights of workers to organize, that raises the minimum wage to allow people who work for minimum wage to make a good living (100,000 dollars a year would be fair at this time, given inflation), and allows workers to make this wage while working 20 - 25 hours a week. These regulations MUST institutionalize clean-energy technologies and population control as well, for obvious reasons.
Hedges has it wrong when he says that the Nazis were fascist. The term itself NaZi is an acronym for national socialist, so hitler was really a lefty just like stalin, afterall ss-units learned their tactics from stalin's concentration camps.
But I agree with Hedges, on the state of our society, and the creature of capitalism that we have nurtured in the US, has become a monster that feeds on its children. I like Hedges moral stand, and i like the way he flows as he speaks.
thats completely false. just calling urself socialist does not make you one. the first victims of the nazis takeover of power were in fact the communsts party of germany even before they turned to jews etc. so what you are saying is absolutely false.
Capitalism is absolutely devoid of love, as Hedges states, because under capitalism, people have no value beyond what they can produce in terms of material production. People are used and discarded like machines, programmed to believe certain things like machines, and destroyed when they have outlived their usefulness and left to die alone in so-called nursing homes, or simply abandoned by the health care system.
The most frightening thing is that since 26 march 2009 there are only 2472 views.
Is America in denial for the truth?
