I really didn't think I could finish watching this, it made me cry.

I remember following several reports in my local newspaper when Barbaro's injury was brought to light; even more, I remember people writing letter after letter to the paper wishing Barbaro well, hoping for the best.

You can thank todays wonderful veterinary care for Barbaro's 'fight'. Back then, when Ruffian died, they didn't have pools that horses could wake up in. That, ultimately was why he lived for 7 more months. Until, he devoloped laminitis. He took it all in stride, but couldn't handle the pain anymore. Thats why they ended his brief life.

That is an excellent memorial to a beautiful and fantastic horse. I watched the day it happened and almost everything about him afterwards. Having lost a horse of my own before, I know the pain of losing a beloved friend. My wife and I help run a rescue here in Colorado and I second your request for people out there to help support a local rescue. These are beautiful and incredible creatures. They dont have a voice so we need to speak for them. Thank you for the video.

@iloveCASH100 If you read the info he had to get put down due to laminitis. This doen not just mean that he was lame. Laminitis is an excrutiatingly painful condition where the bone in the foot (pedal bone)becomes unstable and can rotate and even protrude through the sole. (laymans terms). I'm sure if he was just a little lame after recovering from his his injuries they would have just put him in retirement; not had him put to sleep.

i remember watching the derby and(as our tradition from our living room floor was) my brothers and i picked out the horse we thought would win, i picked number 8 because he was pretty and looked like my old horse...i dont remember who my brothers picked but it wasnt til after the race i realized the horse i picked, Barbaro, had won and i cried when he got injured and cried again when i found out he had to be put down i <3 this horse though i didnt even know him.he was amazing.still is amazing.

If they hadnt cared about him then he'd have been put down at the scene! All his veterinary treatment would have cost an absolute fortune and with a shattered bone he'd never have competed again. I can't even watch this video again - Sitting here at work and fighting the tears - I just cannot beleive how emotional this has made me feel. My Dad had a race horse called 'Follow Charlie' and he had to be put down due to a fall - my father must have been heartbroken.

In the end, they said if he showed ANY signs of pain, then it would be time. When he refused to eat one morning, they knew he had enough.

But Laminitis IS CURABLE, I know several diagnosed cases where it was cured PERMANENTLY. Most of them are well documented, and also a general study is started to make it scientific, not just private.

Just because common vet medicine doesn´t come up with a solution, that does not mean it`s incurable.

And not everything you do not know to heal is genetically inherited.
