  • Oh he is sooo my type! LMBBO at 2:32...I feel the same way about music! I LUV THIS!!!

  • Wow.

  • when he plays the glissandos with his foot, kind of makes you think where Jerry Lee Lewis got it from

  • ♥♥♥

  • I think he was crazy?! I love craziness in that way. What a Pleasure it is to see Astaire dance!

  • amazing

  • Fred Astaire is the master of dance !!! He is incredibly gifted person!

    I admire his talent ! He is genius ! ! !

  • i love his craziness

  • Jeez! those are some sturdy pianos!

  • Is the name of this film Let's Dance (it's not entirely clear from the note). Quite astonishing. An example of someone who found what they were born to do.

  • Great stride piano player, too!!

  • It hurts my feelings when there's a dislike on a video of Fred Astaire.

  • one of my favourite quotes is that "ginger rogers did everything fred astaire did, only backwards and in heels". No doubt though, he's great!

  • @iamqueenkk High heels, yes, but backwards? Only in relation to Fred. At least half the time she's moving forwards. So she did all the same things (except for his numbers without her) but did she do it as well? I do not mean to diminish Ms. Rogers' dancing, but she was NOT in the same class as Astaire. Not as quick, not as musical, not as nimble, and not as effortless-looking.

  • 1 dislike from Gene.

  • Elegance, class and style! Was there any Hollywood film were Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Donald O' Connor all danced together?

  • @epicproportions12df Fred+Gene ;-)

  • @epicproportions12df The only time Fred and Gene danced together was in a segment from a movie called "The Ziegfeld Follies" in 1946. It's on Youtube, if you search for "the babbitt and the bromide." They did something on TV together to, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Sadness, that they didn't do more together.

  • How is he not afraid of dying when he's on the piano.

  • This may be the loosest number Fred ever committed to film. He made it look like he was making it up as he went along but it was rehearsed exhaustively, like all of his routines, to the nth degree.

Kudos to Hermes Pan, Fred's co-choreographer for over twenty years. Brilliantly inventive, he really deserves more recognition.

  • After Fred Astaire's audition for RKO, the talent scout's written summary was “Can’t act. Slightly bald. Also dances.”

  • Gorgeous fun

  • Among the things I never thought I'd see: Fred Astaire uttering a slightly insane scream of joy @ 1:01. It makes all the superhuman dancing he does over, under, and around a baby grand almost acceptable- not to mention dislodging a bunch of cats from inside said baby grand and hopping over furniture a full two years BEFORE it was done in "Singing in the Rain." And he did this at a perfectly ageless 51...OMG!!

  • Was Fred a dancer who was a musician? Or was he a musician who danced? Got me!

  • @followthefleet1 All of it;-) He wrote music, played instruments, danced, stated dancing at the age of 5. that,s why he,s got so much rhytm and understanding of music, Gerhwin and Cole porter wrote songs with his voice in mind, he was not the best singer in the world vocaly but he did it with the right feeling, like you believe him ;-) multi talented. He danced while playing the piano;-)

  • THATS ONE STURDY PIANO!

  • Totally AMAZINGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sometimes I feel exactly like this :)

  • That's crazily insane! I love it though. Fred was just amazing!

  • the greatest graceful skilful tap dancer ever ,nobody can compete with him ,this was my favourite movie among all the astaire,s movies.thanks for posting

  • This just made my month. Thanks so much for posting. Incredible.

  • É isso aí.

  • Wow Fred new how to handle a Piano.

  • Roll the end credits. I want to see that 'no pianos were harmed in the making of this film.' :P

  • I ADORE this movie!

  • jeeez what a cooooool crazy talented guy! love it!

  • I love watching him play the piano - he had a real natural feel for jazz.

  • My Gaaad! Is this Michael Jackson? Nono. Utterly mindblowing. Also I WISH he'd made an album of his piano playing. This, and the piece in "Follow the Fleet" are just brilliant. All ONE take ??? One thing Fred specified was that he be filmed full figure when dancing. A lesson for modern film makers who are obsessed with closeups (for TV?) and quick edits, destroying mood instead of creating it.

  • This is just great - but what show is it from?

    Anyone know?

    Carew

  • A movie called "Let's Dance" (1950), unfortunately not yet released on DVD.

  • little over the top lol jk fred i luv u sooo much ur the best dancer everrrrr

  • About 1:20 I start going "Holy Hell!"

  • i'd like to see someone try to remake this skit. no will ever be like fred. he makes everyone look so mediocre!

  • A real legend. 1 of a kind like Bruce, Elvis, Ali..., best dancer ever.

  • This is fun. Thanks for posting this. I've never seen it before.

  • That lick at 2:13 is crazy man!!!

  • Ummm, suuuuuuure. He has had, what a twenty year career of doing the moonwalk, rather than Fred's 50 year career of doing new steps everytime. Oh, and Fred didn't like little boys.

  • @ChrisStockslager Neither did MJ, you obviously havent seen Michael dance to be making a terrible statement like that

  • @ChrisStockslager Fred Astaire himself said when he saw Michael dance on the Motown 25 Billie Jean "I've finally met my master." Fred Astaire is without a doubt the greatest creative dancer because he can dance with every kind of prop. Michael was no pedophile and bringing up is just sick.

  • @ChrisStockslager You're goddamn right.

  • @ChrisStockslager you are such an ignorant jerk. Fred Astaire was amazing and so was Michael Jackson. Fred Astaire called MJ the "greatest dancer of all time". That was Fred's opinion. Do your research. Fred adored MJ and MJ adored Fred. There is no need to bash either one of them. They danced completely different styles. and once again, do the research. MJ was INNOCENT. Ever heard of Extortion? I doubt you even know what that means. The families were proven to be con artists in court. IDIOT.

  • Bravo! what more can i ask for? Fred Astaire had everything. watching him alone makes me laugh, smile, humming and swinging, surtout, makes me happy.

  • Happy 110th birthday Fred

    u rock

  • A sheer genius!! God gave Mr. Astaire a wonderful gift of dance and he shared his talent to the world!!

  • The scream at 1:02 always makes me giggle... you just KNOW he's always wanted to play piano strings with his foot. :P

  • Bloody Hell...2:29-2:40...the man has GOT Rhythm!!!Love Fred...He's everything i want in a man...talent, charm, manners...a true gentleman.

  • what I had given just to be an extra like the people on the background to see this life!!! Timemachine please !!! ;}}}

  • LOVE the "cats" gag! Now those were movies that entertained with talent, not "shock"!

  • true natural

  • This is why he was the greatest ever!!!

Brilliant, witty, inventive choreography, perfectly performed, and he obviously had a lot of fun while doing it. Incomparable stuff. Yay Fred! :D

  • Fantastic pianoplayer! Oh yeah, he dances too. Fred simply is the best ever.

  • Fanbleedintastic! The cats come out when the band goes into "Hold that tiger"!!

  • omg i love fred. [insert me attempting a walkover...and failing miserably]

  • quite the talented guy

  • There are so many reasons why i love this man!!! an i am constantly reassured by performances like this that he was the greatest....EVER! no contest! xx

  • He is breath-taking to watch. I now know he played the piano brilliantly as well as his singing and dancing. He was a rare gem indeed. Thanks for posting.

  • i would much rather see re-runs of stuff like this, rather than american idol and dancing with the stars.

  • HEAR HEAR !!!!!

  • How could I have possibly missed this?!?

Fred is brilliant! Seriously, he always managed to find new ways to entertain the audiences, and I'm sure himself, too.

  • OMG Fred at his brilliant best! I wonder how many pianos he broke kicking and dancing on them like that!

  • he is playing the piano for real in this scene so amazing!

  • What a talent ! Was there anything that man could not do? Gene Kelly ones sais "fred danced with a wooden stick.(don,t know the wright word for it) and as usually , he made his partner looked good"

  • I've never seen this sketch before! What movie is it from? That man never did the same thing twice -- his imagination was incredible!!!

  • It,s from let,s dance 1950 , just remembered i,ve seen the photo of this scene before in the biogaraphy I have ;)

  • He's more insane than I ever thought! Now thats entertainment at its finest!

  • FANTASTIK!!!!!! The King of dance. Everybone in his body had rythm. There are other good dancers but none could beat Fred.

  • @64102256 Yes, he is grand ! ! !

  • LOL Tiger Rag!

  • AMAZING! When the cats jumped out of the piano, that was totally unexpected, and yet I was almost waiting for that moment! Say, does anyone recognize the other pianist? He sort of resembles Frank Banta, but it's hard to get a good look at him.

  • I love it, looks like piano aerobics!! LOL 5*

  • Astaire's rehearsal pianist, Tommy Chambers.

  • No one is better! Elegant, talented, tons of soul! Dance, sings, acts, plays piano, drums and all amazing.

    I love Fred Astaire!

  • And the shvartzas think they know talent?

    This is REAL talent!

  • Yeah Right!

  • I love the music. Did you know that Fred wrote it?

  • The man knows how to make an exit!!

  • Oh yeah!!

  • Wow, this is the first time I've seen this. He never ceases to amaze me! *g*

And why does he make better music when stomping on the piano keys with his shoes than I do using my hands?

  • Lol! I know what you mean.

  • I'd like to see YOU play ther piano like that, you shmuck.

  • omg i LOVED IT!!! i cant find this on amazon, does anyone know where to buy it?? ... if its even available??

  • i don't think it's on dvd yet. i got a vhs copy of it a few years back off ebay.

  • just hilarius!!!

    I'd say very 'fred'! ;)

  • where they heck did those cats come from?!?! hahahahaha that was awesome.

  • That is so sexy... O_O I'd better close my mouth so I don't drool. xD bad

  • What is this from??

  • A movie from 1950 called Let's Dance. It's a bit hard to find, because Paramount put it out originally, and whatever company now owns it (Universal?) has not put it out on DVD.

  • Thanks! I'll have to try and find it.

  • wow i'd never even heard of this dance. Brilliant.

  • Great! What movie is this from?

  • Omg, that laugh was crazy! You know, the one at 1:02. LOL!

  • Haha that laugh was crazy! That's funny! :)
