bought this tripod with the Manfrotto (3-way) 804RC2, reading up about it and found this guide made it a given choise for me. After seeing it in action i was sold.
had it a few months now and exept being a bit heavy if you dont plan to use a carrying bag for it. Its pritty mutch perfect with all the accessories one can buy for this :)
nice video matey. i have had my tripod for almost a year and had been very frustrated it couldn't get almost to the ground. i didnt realise the adjustable column neck could be turned upside down. brilliant. just brilliant. low angle photography here i come.
hey man good vid, but can you help me with the pan lock? my pan lock doesn't do anything, and the head doesn't pan at all at the base. the ball head works fine, but the pan lock just pulls out and goes around and around, doesn't lock or unlock anything. i'm super pissed. please tell me this is my fault. i don't wanna have to ship a bad product back.
well turns out it's just really really hard to turn at first. feels stuck from the factory. i took a small hammer and just "tapped" it counter clockwise. it unlocked instantly and the head started to pan.
Excellent review. My indecision has ended after this video. I have a Canon 40 d with 24-70 L. After searching the net for a good tripod and head, swayed by the reviews I tilted towards RRS BH-40 LR-mid-sized ballhead and an L plate.
But after seeing this video ( as you demonstrated the duo - Manfretto 055xprob and 488RC2 ball head with heavier rig) I was convinced and made up my mind and bought the same pair a fortnight ago. They seem to be a winning pair. Solid design at an affordable price.
The 808RC4 isn't a ball head is it? Isn't it just a pan/tilt type of head? To me, ball heads are just so much easier to work with. If you have money, definitely go for the 468MGRC2 otherwise the 488RC2is pretty good.
Thanks for the review, i don't know if u'll ever see this, but do you think the $40 difference between the 488rc2 and 808rc4 is justified? whats the major difference between the two?
Great review, out of all the places on the net to get information i found your video the best. thanks for your time. i bought both the 055xprob and the 488rc2 thanks.
I'm going to buy a manfrotto tripod with a head but I kinda need a ballhead-panhead. Because I want to film and take pictures with my D90. Any suggestions? Do you think I can pan nicely enough with this 488RC2? I don't mean horizontal but vertical and diagonal...
Oh, one other question: can the center column be fixed at any angles other than horizontal? Or are the only positions vertical, horizontal, and inverted?
The 055X series can only be set in the vertical and 90 degrees horizontal. The previous tripods can be inverted but required a screwdriver and taking pieces apart.
Great review! Thanks for this, I have been looking at the 055XproB for a long time; and have been trying to figure out which ballhead to get. You did a great job demonstrating the differences between the 488 and 486 heads.
I am still somewhat interested in the Giottos heads, and wonder if any other people have experience with them?
If i had gone with the bogen head i would be preparing to sell it right now...just a word of advise if you dont know giottos, i didnt, but nothing against manfrotto, i love it as well, i just bought this tripod but to go with the giottos head
I would advise anyone looking to buy the 488rc2 or similar to first take a look at the Giottos MH1301, i was about to press the button on the bogen head when i discovered what giottos had to offer, i was blown away, you get at least 2 times the build quality and 2 times the pro performance and at least 4 times the durability and more load capacity for the same price
Thanks for the video, now i am so tempted to get this setup for my D300. I tried the 468C2 head earlier but find it not very steady if mounted with sigma 150f2.8 lens.
Hey I can't hear the wind chimes over all that review stuff! Shhhhh

Does this ball head work on all Manfrotto monopods, or is there some sort of compatability chart I need to look at?

it's a bit of work doing it IMO, and the camera ends up up side down.
Check the "The Silver Pad", they lets you have your camera very low and stable, work with telephoto as well.

you should get the 808RC4, it's much better than what you have. I have the 055XPROB as well and the 808RC4 doesn't make it much heavier! it's awesome

Do you always need to use the handgrip to move my camera around? cause for photography I want it to be as flexible as the 488RC2.

"Manfrotto 391RC2 ballhead"
