a while ago while we were watching a tale of two sisters with my friends.we were really confusing about the story and in the end of the movie we know what is the story all about
@ThowHilton I like "Arang" completely separate from the way I like the "Ju-on" films. "Arang" is good and creepy. Wasn't a rip off to me. "Phone", "A Tale Of Two Sisters", "Wishing Stairs", "A.P.T.", "The Red Shoes" and "Epitaph" are some creepy films too.
The tradition of white ghost with long black hair hiding her face comes from Japanese legend of "mistress owia". The grudge got 'summara's" look from there.
Veteran detective So-young and her rookie partner Hyun-gi happen onto an incendiary homicide case. While Hyun-gi is goofing up and distracting So-young, So-young senses that there is something wrong in the case. They discover that the present case is somehow related to the mysterious death of a girl ten years previously. At this point, So-young becomes plagued with nightmares in which the girl appears. And the serial killings continue . . .
How many of these movies do the ole' creepy little girl in the long white night dress and the long hair bit? Come on... let's be fair and honest... even the biggest asian horror film fanatics have GOT to admit by now, yeah - it's a BIT over done.....
Well it's not like there recycling the same movie monster over and over again, in asian culture thats what a ghost looks like. When some one says angel you know what there talking about. In asia you say ghost and they say that...
To be fair I should point out American horror films do something even more redundant - the never ending horror sequels! Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street and the never dying Michael Myers. We'd rather bet on a sure thing than come up with something original. By the way, I'm a big fan of the Eye and Eye2. I particularly like when that woman in Eye 2 jumped off that balcony. But if I see one more ghostly looking girl in a white night gown I'm afraid I might jump off a balcony myself! hehheh
Very good South Korean horror film like: "A Tale of Two Sisters", "Phone", "Epitaph", "Apartment" (A.P.T.), "The Red Shoes", "Bunshinsaba" and "Ryung".
And why am I so thankful? Lol, it's coz I recently had an argument with someone who kept on saying rude things about Korea, saying they copy everything from Japan, which they didn't, just got inspired, so I'm a little paranoid, that's all.
With films like "Save The Green Planet", "Hansel & Gretel", "Natural City", "My Wife is a Gangster" trilogy, "Punch Lady", "A Tale of Two Sisters", "The Host", "Phone", "Epitaph", "No Blood No Tears", "The Quiet Family", "Death Bell", "Wishing Stairs", "I'm A Cyborg But That's Ok", "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" and "OldBoy", South Korea is not copying anyone. Anybody that thinks otherwise is simply ignorant. There are always people on here bashing someone. Ignore them. Take care always.
@blizzare24 There are many great Thai films like "Shutter", "Alone", "4bia", "Phobia 2" aka "5 Prang", "Ong Bak" 1-3, "Chocolate", "Suriyothai" and yes, "The Sisters". But the issue here was South Korean films. They have made so many genre busting films and they don't need to copy ANYONE. "Haeundae", "Memories Of Murder", "The Host", "Mother", "Old Boy", "A Tale Of Two Sisters", "Death Bell", "Phone", "Apartment" aka "A.P.T.", "Natural City", "Poetry" and "Chaw" are huge South Korean hits.
@luvindogadis411 umm... death bell is not that scary but i like and arang scared me lol and alone and shutter because to tell you frankly i already experience the feeling of being watched by the unknown that's why i love to watch horror movies but really i can see the unknown i dunno if you believe me... but in fact i captured the unknown through my cell phone and if you like i can show it to you no editting swear you'll freak out .. :)
@hungga88 Sure. No prob. There is also these South Korean films: "Apartment", "Bunshinsaba", "Hidden Floor", "Twilight Gangsters", "Haeundae", "Chaw", "Mother", "The Housemaid", "Bestseller", "The Red Shoes", "Face", "Unborn But Forgotten", "Conduct Zero", "Volcano High", "Sex Is Zero", "Whispering Corridors 5: A Blood Pledge", "Nightmare", "Poetry", "Musa The Warrior", "The Chaser", "Troubleshooter", "Memories OF Murder", "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance", "Surprise", "Death Bell 2".
Oh and not to mention some of Kim Ki Duk's legendary films like: "The Isle", "3-Iron", "Samaritan Girl", "Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall and Spring" and "Bad Guy".
Totally agreed, there are only a few rare films that scare by using the actual "story" rather than only judging the "looks" of the ghost. But this movie has both, which is amazing...
I want to say thanks for not saying something retarded like "Korea copies Japan" thanks! Coz some people say "This SO copied Ringu" but you instead used the word "influence" thanks again!
It's true, Korea is inspired by Japan's works and makes more legends out of them... but I wouldn't exactly say that they copied, they just got "influenced", that's all.
I agree. South Korea may have been influenced by Japanese films like "Ringu", "Ju-on" and "Dark Water" and maybe even Hong Kong films like "The Eye". But South Korea has put themselves on the map with films like "A Tale of Two Sisters", "Epitaph", "Hansel & Gretel", "Memories of Murder", "The Host", "Arang", "The Red Shoes", "Death Bell", "Wishing Stairs", "Phone", "Natural City" and many others. Even less popular South Korean horror films like "Ryung", "A.P.T." and "Bunshinsaba" are good.
Yeah, after Ringu and Juon came out, Korea nd Thai started making explosions out of it, lol! And as I was saying, thanks for not being racist and saying stupid things like "This movie was copied from Juon, it's obvious, Korea always copies", which sounds just retarded, and for the third time, thanks for understanding.
I completely understand. My wife is Asian. She is from Indonesia. And before her, I dated a woman from China. We have friends from Japan, Thailand, China, Philippines, Vietnam and of course Indonesia. My daughter's best friend is Korean. South Korea has made a very respected name for themselves in many aspects; including the film industry. They make some magnificent films. My wife loves the romantic comedies from South Korea. I love the horror and mystery films from there.
There have been many ghost horror films from South Korea as of recent like: Apartment (A.P.T.), Bunshinsaba, Phone (awesome), Nightmare, A Tale of Two Sisters (the best), Into The Mirror, Ryung aka The Ghost, Acacia, The Uninvited, Memento Mori, Wishing Stairs, Cello, The Red Shoes, Epitaph (really good), Hansel & Gretel and others. Arang is one of the better ones.
Aside from the impressive visuals and an unusually(for this genre) extensive back-story, this movie has a beautiful soundtrack as well. You should definitely check it out. Anyway, just a small correction: 'Ju-on' and 'Ringu' did not originate the long-haired girl ghost imagery. It's been a staple of Asian ghost-lore for a very long time. Like vampires and moaning ghosts have been around forever in the West.
these movies r just so awesomely creepy. i want to continue my collection!!!
but...:it was a little confusing at parts...like in the beginning where they show the person crying while looking in the salt shed thing (lol) i know its just a trailer but i cant wait to see it.
this movie was awesome it was creepy in the begining but sad near the ending of the movie one of the greatest korean horror films ive seen.By the way if you seen this movie,do you know a site where i can downlaod that creepy piano theme (the one where the guys gets an email saying they've been invited to a salt village and then a creepy theme plays) yeah you know where i can downlaod it as a ringtone ?
i love how alot of asian horror movies end. with the the feeling that things will still happen later on in the people's lives.or that things justgona end with nothing to do with anything like a ghost leaving after terrorizing a whole school memento mori. and this is my bro's name so dont reply
Arang looks like it's a decent "mind games" horror movie. Definetly something I would like to see. I'm definetly seeing a pattern with Asian Horror based things such as the Ju-on series, as well as the first Fatal Frame game. They love to slowly play with your mind, and they figured Women and Children have a far better fear effect than males. (why I'm not sure, but it works)
ive noticve that mostly of the korean horror movies haive girls with long black hair with a white long dress, bloody eyes and hands and then they grabbed you...somehting to do with the hands gabing saomthing...hehehhe
Do you have any reccomondations for Japanese movies? I own The Princess Blade, Ringu Anthology of Terror(1,2,3+0), Ju-On, The Hypnotist, Infection and SHINOBI. About the only kinda movies I don't like are teen and chick flicks.
I have a dvd movie of Phone, it's not great, just OK.
You should watch Thailand horror movie called 'Shutter'. That one is 10x much scarier than Phone. Try to watch that movie first and probably after you watch that movie, you are gonna say Phone is not that great. I own that DVD movie and it is very scary! That's also a recommendation for Fateguardiankiyone :)

Seems that the only horror movies coming out in America at the moment are:
1. Remakes of 70's & 80's horror classics
2. Shitty nock offs of "the blair witch"
3. Asian horror movie remakes all of which now star... You guessed it! creepy girl who crawls on floor/walls/ceiling.

This movie looks wonderful.
I seem to be slightly (for lack of a better word) "attracted" to the horror movies containing girls/women with the long hair covering their face.
It makes the movie a much more frightening experience.
Such movies as 'Ju-on' and 'Ringu' obviously precedented this type of horror,
but some of it's copiers have done a fine job as well,
and this looks like a movie that interpreted it well, too.
I can't wait to check this out. (:

I'm an asion horror fanatic and I love korean horror. I hope they still make good korean horror like before when Asian Horror Films was on its peak..

This looks pretty good, but I think Apartment and Phone are still gonna be better.
