Try this, Put a string through one Mentos. take a 2 liter bottle of diet coke. shut the string inside the cap so the Mentos isn't touching the liquid, (inside the bottle, for you geniuses) all you have to do is turn the bottle so the Mentos is drenched. pressure will build and the bottle will pop. this is also funny when leaving the bottle for someone to open, it spray up like a gyser.

Yes, the chemical reaction does happen, but it happens instantaneously. he wouldn't have time to get the lid on. another thing, you couldn't get it to explode in a cup, it would just overflow like a science fair volcano. the pressure would escape out of the straw hole, if not the lid would just pop open. you'd need something with a reinforced seal, such as a twist on lid. mugs do not have air tight seals.
