  • This is a fantastic song, takes us to the reality of who we should be serving and who we are indebted to.

  • Hitchens

    1949-2011

  • @oogrooq HAHAHAHAAHA! The irony!

  • Leonard recited this before the Webb Sisters sang it at the Opera House in Manchester a few years ago, I wept. I am one of many beautiful losers who will be played out with this song as I enter the furnace

  • @TimClynes

    Yes... Those Beautiful Losers... :)

  • Je fonds quand j'entends cette musique et encore plus quand je te vois

    Louis

  • This man.. has meant the world to me ever since I was age 3.. I knew all his songs, sang them with my mother, I have never had a greater respect for ANY musician as I do for Leonard. <3 you Lenny... WHAT a heavenly voice.. heart~wrenching words.. just so beautiful, you ache because of it.. (Ha Shawshank I know, but I just couldn't find any more of a fitting way to put it ;)

  • Our will is him to siiinnggg.

  • one of those songs that got me through some serious shit

  • yes, there are no words adequate to the task of praising this master and this beautiful poetry. all i can say is thank you..thank you for the poetry, thank you for t he music and thank you for the gift of Leonard Cohen. there has not ever been another like him, can you imagine another like him? no. he is it.

  • I thought that the Antony's version was unreachable... but then I listened to the original version.

    Simply great.

  • Thank you radalia,great song.

  • I got to know this song when I was a kid from the movie Pump Up The Volume, and have loved it ever since.

  • @Freak0809 That movie had many great ones. I love Why cant I fall in love

  • i have had the almost for me unbeleiveable opportuntity see this master twice, once in 1980 and then in 2009. In all my times of trial, and sometimes in my joyful times, i reach for his music. And today I am sad at some developments in my life. And once again the master has come to my aid. thank you Mr Cohen.

  • I had a dream (or a will) to write the most perfect song the world had ever heard...Leonard beat me to it!

  • when a thundastorm come?byo eat all you can

  • Thank you Mr. Cohen. For your words and your grace.

  • im 46, im ashamed to say i am only now getting to hear and know this guy-superb...

  • Got drenched n drowned in the pool of beautiful, heart stopping words n the great voice. Amazing! Awesome ! Difficult to come out from this trance !!

  • A compete and utter genius.

  • The first time I ever heard this song was in the movie Pump up the Volume it spoke to me I have loved this song since then I was 13 i am now 33 time goes by too fast

  • @vampyrekisses77 Amen. I'm about a month and a half away from 33. I have no idea where the years went.

  • @vampyrekisses77 that makes two of us. I still watch that movie.

  • @vampyrekisses77 ...Man i am turning 40 and that movie and music still speak to me..i think that all our children should watch it to let them know that what they are feeling and going thru are not new and that they will make it thru that shit hole we call high school..

  • @vampyrekisses77 applies to me too :) was 13, now 33 & still love the movie

  • 9 people are unable to hear beauty.

  • I love it ... ;))

  • Like a prayer he sing his song

so beutiful so i can´t spell it right

  • the more you beo ple,the more i become:.if you know it all....

  • Same here!!! :-) i used to be sooo much in love with Christian Slater! shame on me for misspelling the title, oops:-D That movie was my first encounter with Mr. Cohen! A great film. though i have become a teacher, i still feel as if i belonged much more into the group of my students than to the grown ups´:-)

  • @WhiteMothsOnTheWing I bet you're like that nice Blonde teacher who got fired for 'rocking the boat' ('especially when ur sitting in it').

Yes Christian was divine! Did you know how he got those cool eyebrows? I read in an old interview with him, that when he was young he shaved them off and they grew back like that. LOL.

  • I keep thinking of the suicide scene in Pump Up the Volume. If I were emo, I'd so slit my wrists to this!

  • @SharnsiR Pump of the Volume :-) ♥ gosh, you remember that film! I loved it!

  • @WhiteMothsOnTheWing Yes! When I was a kid that was my favourite movie, back in the days before the internet and cheap movie access. I must have watched the VHS 100x or more! I really loved the "Everybody Knows" song he used for the show's intro and this song after Malcolm died (first you shit your shorts LOL). I tried to buy the soundtrack, but it had different artists covering the songs and wasn't a 'true' soundtrack. Thanks to Google I now know the original was Leonard Cohen.

  • @SharnsiR i was so pissed when i bought the soundtrack and it had diff artists doing the songs!

  • @braddweekes Oh knows, you poor thing. Luckily for me I decided to take a listen on the store headphones first. They were fairly new in Melbourne stores back then so it was cool to be able to listen to things BEFORE you pay for them!

The trouble was, my VHS was recorded from TV and the end was cut off, so I was never able to find out who the originals were by.

  • Wonderful song, amazing voice!

  • Brilliant

  • perfect song of perfect movie :****

  • OMG there is simply NOBODY better!!

  • cool voice. a nice calming song. bravo!

  • I just saw him in concert, yesterday actually, and this moment of the show was pure magic...his Chorists, the Webb sisters, perform this song with their two angel's voices and just an harp and a guitar, it was wonderful. One of the greatest show of my life. Actually, one of the greatest moment of my life!!

  • @thildeska oh I'm SO jealous! :-)

  • His voice is not from this world. Leonard knows it as well. In his song "Tower of Song" he sings, "I was born with the gift of a golden voice" amazing

  • @headshot213 in an interview Leonard Cohen said that he has never thought his voice any good, that's why, he said,he used back up female voices to sweeten things up.

  • @dieter10seconds

Oh yeah, was it in I'm your fan the dvd interview. "People think I have a good voice but I think I barely sing in key" he says something like that. But he really gets his voice going on some songs. No matter what he thinks he's voice is absolute perfection

  • @chillibomba1 Who gives a fuck if he's Canadian? Does that make him different from the rest of the world?

  • @Oxidus no, hes just a great Canadian

  • @Oxidus

It just makes him "not from the states" and that's quite likeable to the rest of the world ;-)

  • @HappyHannah83 70 years ago we were the rest of the world here in America. We who saved freedom, gave blood and treasure, never paid or asked for in return. A little appreciation please. You enjoy what freedom you have because of their names. the fallen from America.

  • love you Leo..

  • Leonard Cohen just recieved a Grammy and is going to recieve a lifetime achievement award. He is so alive. Not dead at all.

  • Stop the hate, before it's too late.

  • Phenomenal! Leonard Cohen is a Musical Messiah! An Amazing Jew...and a gift to Humankind!

    Sue Ann Scheck

  • he credits his time in a buddhist monastery for his perspective on life.

  • I just hope I'll hear this song when I'll go ...

  • my fave of some very great songs of leonard's asongs/poems .truth from the soul. beautiful.

  • very sorry for your loss. may you not know any more sorrow.

  • Mm, thank you, adamsv1000. :3

  • You are welcome mate. Do you very best that you kids will think about you years after you are gone. don't wish to make you sad but that is the way of life that people born, getting older and die. What makes very sad is when people are taken away may years before their time. That is the worse.

  • how come everyone says hes dead but there is no info anywhere that hes dead?

  • @scudbunny not that I've heard. JD salingr died

  • HE IS NOT DEAD - He is very much alive!!

  • for the love of god!!! he is not dead!

  • i know he did a version with the webb sisters. dont know who this might be

  • Perfect song!

  • hi there ,

does anybody know who is the main back vocal ? love her voice .

    thanks

  • its the webb sisters

  • Jennifer Warnes

  • on the original 1985 recording of the song it was Jennifer Warnes. Only recently it was The Webb Sisters, who sang backup on his tour and recorded a new version of the song. But Jennifer Warnes is the backup for this 1985 version.

  • I adore this photo

  • Forget "I did it my way" et al, this one is my choice for my funeral.

  • I love this song by Leonard or Antony and this is also a beautiful rendition. Like her reflection in her eye......

  • beautiful song

  • f it be your will that I speak no more and my voice be still as it was before.. I will speak no more..

  • divine

  • no better comment is possible :)

  • Damn...this a sad freakin song. put a lump in your throat if u think of hard times. good and bad times..awesome song.

  • @destryallanbell YES there was a lump in my throat - some early skin cancer - and I was listening to this song over and over again - HEALING happening

  • @pabloprem Thank God for that

  • wow -- leonard cohen the deep

  • first time hearing this.. moved me .. just beautiful

  • In fact, there is no real backup singer. On this 1984 version on Various Position, the co-singer is Jennifer Warnes who is listed with Cohen in the singer section, not with the backing vocals. On the 2009 Live in London version, the song is performed by the Webb Sisters, Charley (guitar) and Hattie (harp). Sharon Robinson appears on Boogie Street on this same Live in London and definitely demonstrates her gifted talents.

  • whatever the technical details...this is PERFECT !!!

  • Please listen to this version of Anthony...

  • Comment removed

  • What exactly are you talking about? If you are referring to the version Antony does of this song, it was performed during a concert in honor of Leonard Cohen. Everyone sang one of his songs. If you think this was not written by LC then you are over your head son. OFF the internets, one year! Noob.

  • Comment removed

  • Hmm. This is LC. Are you sure you are posting to the correct song/version?

  • I was just referring to Anthony's version ... Leonard is ALWAYS perfect ..even improving (if possible) with age !

  • great reply sweetheart! I hate when younger people make comparison and post comments about original materials without the benifit of years of establishing constructive criticism. rarely are things better than the original. kids hear remakes and pronounce them better without realizing that people cover tunes out of respect for the original.

  • Classic {Deep Song} Stop What Your Doin And Listen.........

  • The back up signer is Sharon Robinson, gifted talent.

  • The back up singer is Jennifer Warnes

  • one of his most beautiful songs

  • His lyrics are so unique as is his voice.....I've heard his music performed by others for years...And bonded to his prose. But until I heard him singing, did it all seem to make sense. He is the lyrics

  • @rhinestonemermaid

This is a "Gift "from all religious states on Earth.

    Harmony fulfilled

  • @rhinestonemermaid EXACTLY!

  • @rhinestonemermaid definitely.

  • @rhinestonemermaid I feel the same and Dylan too.

  • :-)

  • I love Leonard´s music, lyrics, soul, experience...

He´s given me so much....thank you Mr. Leonard...

  • ditto that! He's been a part of my life since 1975, there is none that can compare.

  • he´s been a part of my life since 1976 when I found my parents´LP with his song (O: The song was Suzanne and it was sung in Czech by a Czech singer. I still love that song, but now i prefer Leonard´s version (O: ...and I can understand something different than that time...

  • I think that was one of his first songs I ever heard, on an FM station in 1974. I ran out and bought every one of his albums I could get my hands on. It must sound cool i Czech! If you find a video of that, send it to me!

  • Radalia,

wenn du jetzt noch die Frau, die zu mir passt

in das Auge zaubern kannst, dann will ich es

als Poster an meiner Wand haben:-)))))))))

  • simply ...beautiful...today as when it was written ....and the darker voice of Leonard Cohen - as he gets older - adds to the beauty of this and to all his songs ...

  • I agree! I had lost track of his works until about 2002, and when I heard him again, I could barely recognize his voice, but when I realized it was him singing, I was quite happy with his well-aged, mellow tones. And that must be Jennifer Warnes singing backup, I think she's the best backup singer he's ever had. God, what I would give to sing with him, just once!

Live long and happily Leonard, you are a blessing.

  • This is a Hymn....simple and beautiful

  • Beautiful song.

But its length is about 3:45.

    And the video's is 6:03.

    WHY?!?!

  • precioso, es una verdadera entrega de amor, ceder la voluntad a otro

  • Beautiful.. Thank you :)

  • This song is hauntingly beautiful!!! I love it!!

  • is it really a love song ? seems to me more like a prayer ... and what a prayer !!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • this is my favorite love song.

  • still find ...with due respect ... JulesD the best representation of this onyristic song...

  • Are you trying to say "onanistic"? why would you call a song you like onanistic?

  • sorry.....French language is sometimes taking over and I just make an awful mix of English and French and whatever other language I speak...I meant oneiric ....I deeply apologize ..:))

  • Now there's a gospel song! One of Cohen's best tunes ever, and that's saying a lot. Thanks for posting.

  • Awesome song.

  • i thank you a lot mister LEONARD.i always respect you from a long time a go.you the best for me .evem if i'm an artist, you the best for all time

  • Leonard Cohen: for all those who listen to the lyrics when they listen to music; for all those who have a heart that can be torn by words alone; for all those who seek healing in emotion that observes itself...

  • I just wanted to respond to your comment because it is completely right on. Thank you for putting that into words. it is exactly how I feel about Leonard Cohen's work. I absolutely love him, and I am so thankful that he lives and writes such amazing beautiful poems/songs for us. Thank you, Leonard, you beautiful dude.

  • His words are mine. My heart is mingled, I'm all upside down when I listen to his songs.

  • dolce, amorevole, coraggiosa canzone
