Your method works, but the Mossberg owner's manual (downloadable if you don't get a paper one mossberg . com/content.asp?ID=520§ion=service ) tells you to simply remove the barrel, hold the shotgun pointed down, and gently shake it. The dowel slips out of the screw hole and you just pull it out.
California law says you can only have 3 shots if you are hunting for "migratory birds," so keep that dowel.

Ok if you do not know how to get the plug out of your shotgun than you really need to see a gunsmith and have him tell you how to clean it and dissassemble it. Mossberg is GARBAGE!!! The Mossberg is used by some branches but very few the US Military has adopted the Remington 870 and the Benelli M4 as their main use shotguns. The Only branch that has adopted them is the Marine Security Force Battalion. Which is a branch inside of a branch. Also they have switched over to the 590 now so they rarely use the 500 anymore.

Some states don't require the use of the magazine limiter.Unless I am in a state that doesn't specify having it,the one that came with my 500 stays in the gun closet on a shelf.I can always install it if needed.
The reason the wooden dowel is installed at the factory is due to federal migratory bird hunting regulations. You can only have 3 shells in the gun if hunting migratory birds such as geese or ducks.

Good video ! I open my gun safe and there is a tray inside with several plugs for various shotguns in it . Sometimes I have even hunted and forgot to put them back in. That's a big fine here in Missouri if the game warden catches you . Some lawsare just plain stupid . My dad and I spoke of going bird hunting next year, and I have to work to be able to purchase this firearm. @Spillah21 18" barrel is perfect for home defense,easier to aim indoors. for bird hunting longer barrels like 28" are more ideal due to the fact that the longer the barrel the better the range you'll get. You could meet somewhere in the middle and get like a 22" barrel or something.
Youtube is a good source for information, but it seems like you need to step it up by being more informed. Reference page 4 or your Mossberg owners manual and you will KNOW why that dowel is there.

correct way to remove that plug is to take off the barrel like you did and point the gun down while UNLOADED...gently shake around a bit until the end of the dowel comes out of the magazine...then just pull it out. Please don't tell people to load a gun like that...someone is dumb enough and will actually die. P.S. - you might have another o-ring down inside your magazine from the looks of your video...my dowel had two o-rings on it when removed...you only had one...
Removing the plug isnt the least bit illegal, though I wouldnt remove it via loading the firearm. The plug is rather easily removed by point the mag tube down after removing the barrel. Sometimes it takes a little manipulation, but I've never NOT had one come out.
It IS illegal in many cases to hunt with the plug removed, For example: in my area deer, youre only allowed to carry 3 rounds in the gun. Otherwise, it isnt at all unsafe to have a full mag tube.

Removing the "plug" is NOT illegal, EXCEPT if you are hunting certain game with it removed. But to make the blanket statement that it's illegal is plain WRONG. I do not hunt (animals), and my Mossberg 500 had the plug removed from day one. It is NOT illegal and it does NOT make it "unsafe" or any of the other stupid replies people have made.
This is perfectly legal but this way is unsafe. It's best to follow the owner's manual's instructions. I'll post a video response showing a safer way.

The reason the wooden dowel is installed at the factory is due to federal migratory bird hunting regulations. You can only have 3 shells in the gun if hunting migratory birds such as geese or ducks.
If you aren't hunting that type of game, or are using the firearm for defensive purposes it is perfectly legal and acceptable to remove the dowel.
Just ensure you reinstall it if you want to hunt waterfowl or the DNR will bust ya.

Wow you're retarded. Please read your owner's manual and don't waste our time with a video like this. And also, don't load a gun in your house. You may not know this, but it's improper gun safety. Finally, without a barrel, if a shell was to go off, you would have pellets all in your beautiful brunette locks.

Good video ! I open my gun safe and there is a tray inside with several plugs for various shotguns in it . Sometimes I have even hunted and forgot to put them back in. That's a big fine here in Missouri if the game warden catches you . Some lawsare just plain stupid . Some city kid can carry an SKS or 30-06 with 10 rounds during deer season, but shotguns are restricted to 3 .

No shit, that plug is for hunting, and you better have that in there if you are hunting game and the Game Wardens or Fish and Wildlife drop by. They will seize your stuff, your shotgun, hunting license, and everything else that you used during hunting, and even the car that bought you there. That plug is so you don't have an unfair advantage when you are hunting, so you don't shoot over your limit. Just take the freakin plug out, you don't have to go about disassembling your shotgun. Geez.

@Spillah21 18" barrel is perfect for home defense,easier to aim indoors. for bird hunting longer barrels like 28" are more ideal due to the fact that the longer the barrel the better the range you'll get. You could meet somewhere in the middle and get like a 22" barrel or something.

correct way to remove that plug is to take off the barrel like you did and point the gun down while UNLOADED...gently shake around a bit until the end of the dowel comes out of the magazine...then just pull it out. Please don't tell people to load a gun like that...someone is dumb enough and will actually die. P.S. - you might have another o-ring down inside your magazine from the looks of your video...my dowel had two o-rings on it when removed...you only had one...

Removing the plug isnt the least bit illegal, though I wouldnt remove it via loading the firearm. The plug is rather easily removed by point the mag tube down after removing the barrel. Sometimes it takes a little manipulation, but I've never NOT had one come out.
It IS illegal in many cases to hunt with the plug removed, For example: in my area deer, youre only allowed to carry 3 rounds in the gun. Otherwise, it isnt at all unsafe to have a full mag tube.

Removing the "plug" is NOT illegal, EXCEPT if you are hunting certain game with it removed. But to make the blanket statement that it's illegal is plain WRONG. I do not hunt (animals), and my Mossberg 500 had the plug removed from day one. It is NOT illegal and it does NOT make it "unsafe" or any of the other stupid replies people have made.
