i had a crap baby grand piano, i couldnt even give it away, no one wanted to pay for shipping it from my house to theirs, nothing is better than bosendorfer and old steinways, if youve played a yamaha which is good, and youve been playing for about 20 years, and you play a bosendorfer or well made Steinway, there is a major difference, like comparing a ferrari to a yugo
While I am here, I will make a comment regarding pianos. I have played on a couple, but don't own an acoustic due to finances - pianos are bloody expensive. SO, people, quit going on about certain pianos having a 'bad sound' or being inferior, because it sickens me. I wish I could afford a 'crap' piano. Jeeeez.
@weterr123 There is a website somewhere a pianist told me about where you can get really good pianos for free. All you have to do is pay for the movers to transport them for you. They are free for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes they are inherited and the family doesn't play, for instance.
The comments on this video should not be about what piano Michiel is playing, but rather, how he is playing the piece. I have watched a few of his videos before, especially when I was learning the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique. I find that Michiel chooses to play pieces a little slower than intended, which is fantastic for clarity and viewing when we can see his hands. It's a nice job, well done.
Along with the emotional side of music, there is also a technical side. I was merely commenting on some technical aspects but I know those aren't the most important things. I totally agree with your views on music. Music is what feelings sound like. Music is at it's best if it's honest. A cheap violin could sell for millions if it was made to play beautiful music by a great musician.
Now I have heard the whole piece, I think you must play a chopin' s ballade with a little more emphasis (a little more heart), expecially from 8.48'' to 9.05''.
hi,as a polish pianist have to admit is not a bad interpretation although the tempo is too slow and one thing is missed its too dark and heavy you have to play with more light but its good,God Bless Chopin for that immortal piece...
It's not a random piece he played. Chopin composed this piece inspired by a patriotic narrative poem, Konrad Wallenrod by Adam Mickiewicz, in which Wallenrode is portrayed as a Lithuanian who deliberately leads the Knights into defeat. Mickiewicz wrote it in protest against the late-18th-century partitioning of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, and Austria.
Was unsterblich im Gesang soll leben, muss im Leben untergehen. F. Schiller
Who cares what piano you play on Steinway or Yamaha's. Mr. Szpliman played this ballade or another one to a German officer and it helped save his life. It is not the brand name of the instrument you play on but the passion you feel while playing.
@verit8889 Don't be rude. Violinists and guitar players and other musicians are extremely picky about which instruments they play. Why not pianists as well?
@karennorwegian If you failed to get my last post, here goes. Mr. Szpliman nor my Dad thought the war was anything other than a tragedy. Please play on what ever brand you wish. But it will not make you a great musician or me a better person. To be the kind of character they both were you and I would have to be born with it. And sorry to say you and I will never achieve their greatness. But at least I can say in my lifetime I meet a person of great character.
@verit8889 I'm not arguing with your point. But, why are you offended if posters want to talk about their favorite pianos? They're obviously serious musicians and music devotees and understand what you are saying about passion. Why the anger? If you want to feel anger, direct it toward people who are oblivious to heavenly music.
and I agree that this ballade of Chopin perfectly reflects what Szpilman went through during the World War II ..!
ALSO my favourite moment of this ballade is the small section from 00:58 - 2:00 I love this theme repeating throughout the piece, so sad and emotional it is.
@MrTalentwasted HEHE! You almost might say that! Not far from it anyway! They dont come anymore, these great artist. Sad. We in norway had one of the last, Edvard Grieg. You should listen to some of his work! He also has some very nice inventions!

I like it, one thing however, i think you lifted your hand too much sometimes which makes a difference, for me of course, it could be smoother the lh more, laggato. Good job though :D
@craymiranda I'm not 98% of the pianists I think! Luckily I'm not... I'm not saying yamaha's have the best sound, but I'm also not a fan of a Steinway, the sound is too standard, because almost everyone is playing on a steinway. If I have the choice, I will choose for a unique sound, Bechstein for example has beautiful grand pianos with a very unique and warm sound....
@michielroosen Yes, you ae right. Music is all about interpertation either in personal expression or on the instrument itself. I have played steinways myself but never that impressed in comparison to others. 'Tho' one can even get variations on the same model. Chopin was a genius and a lovely person to have so much poetic music within, I love Chopin. M
@michielroosen if you want to avoid standardization and obtain a better sound I think the best option you have is to play on a Bösendorfer (in my humble opinion the best instrument ever)
by the way I like your rubato in the fourth minute =)
@michielroosen ... Meine Komplimente, Du bist super am Klavier... und ich gratuliere Dir für deine Wahl, weil Bechstein mir auch lieber als Steinway gefällt. Herzlichen Grüße aus Brasilien !
@michielroosen I agree. Bechstein pianos are beautiful. I believe they made the piano that Liszt used. Which is a great accomplishment because Liszt needed a piano to withstand his brutal playing. Bechsteins have an amazing sound, and I as well prefer it over a Steinway. I wish more concert pianists used them, but perhaps it's a good thing because them being less common makes them more unique. Great video by the way. You're an amazing pianist. I've always loved this movie.
@michielroosen I have never played on a Bechstein nor a Steinway (only have heard them being played), only a Yamaha. It sounds great. Awesome piano you have here nevertheless.
@michielroosen I totally agree. I love pianos from german speaking Europe: Bechstein, but also Bösendorfer, Grotrian, Blüthner and Schimmel. I'm sure 90% of the steinways fans just have never played one of those.
And I also love my 50s May Berlin due to its uniqueness. The new ones from Schimmel are still good quality but not what its been prior to the 80s (maybe a bit nostalgic ;-) )
@craymiranda You're one of the musicians I hate... The type that judges other musicians by how long have they been playing the instrument or by whatsoever instrument do they play... The instrument should be a medium of your soul and of what you're feeling. Not just a thing that shows what kind of player it is... I am pianist too and I am a clarinet soloist. I play my concerto clarinet that has beautiful sound and it's not a instrument mostly bought by soloists... Have a nice day...
@triplehelix989 a pianist is much more important than a piano brand. he is very good, boy and he doesn't need a steinway to make Chopin sound wonderful.
@karatish92 Yeah I know man. I just think it sounds BETTER on a steinway. It already sounds beautiful. I just believe it sounds BETTER on a steinway. Thats just my opinion not saying its a fact.
I have SO much to say.... First, Brilliant. I'm not moved to tears with most classical pieces, but watching you play that piece, in that room, added with the emotions I could hear, and see. Im no slouch when it comes to performing as a pianist, but you just blew me away, for real. I stand amazed. Well, sit. Either way, It was fabulously interpreted, and performed. Congratulations! I'm a happy customer! :D
@malayrojak No, but I said that because''The Pianist movie'' is based on Szpilman's life (Władysław Szpilman is a Jewish pianist who survived the Holocaust)
Wow... Amazing. This is how i like it to be played :) But he, the stuff from 'the pianist' all really happened, also the last part? I love the last part, where he starts playing and the german soldier looks deeply touched. Geuss not all germans where like devils back then...

@djesusemoticon No one agrees with your philosophy, because 'song' has a different meaning. A song is a competition adapted for singing; but your definition is meant otherwise metaphorically. As a composer as well here, it is better for all my pieces to be known such and not be amalgamated such in dejected manners.
wow, you're truley gifted ! a great job may I ask you how long it take to you to learn that song `? I'm on it but all friends of mine say that this song is,too challenging for me, but I love it so much !! I'm really impressed from yours !!
It was sad but unfortunately so truthful and just brilliant movie-masterpiece from master Roman Polanski. He did a great job and deserved his Oscar. The same with Adrien Brody - phenomenal acting!!! The whole cast was great. The Pianist is one of my favorite War movies - along with Escape from Sobibor (1987), Schindler's List (1993), Life Is Beautiful (1997), Savior (1998) and Black Book (2006).
Great film, piece and everything. But am I the only one who has ever wondered how it is that, in the completely devastated ruins of what used to be a town district, our main character is able to find a lovely piano - totally undamaged and in tune!?
@russ2246 i speak from strictly personal experience. as a concert pianist who plays only romantic era music for the most part, i have played on hundreds of pianos from dozens of brands. steinway and bosendorfer have always sounded the best to me. once again, just my own opinion from experience.
Really quite a beautiful rendition of the piece. I do feel that there could be a lot more structure involved here and particularly m 93 thru 104 which needs to begin truly pp and return to it in m 100. It's a tough shot. I know. 44 thru 64 nicely done. M 69-well, that is a 1/16th note there at the end. I loved 206 and 207 but il piu forte possible means just that. Nice tempo though. The rest of the cadence is brilliantly developed and i just love it. From m 208 on is brilliant. Love it!
@koolkikij The brand doesn't make the piano. Yamaha or Steinway; no two pianos are the same. I hope to restore my old Bush & Lane 5'9 grand piano one day and if it's done right, it'll sound better than anything being churned out by the big piano companies. But since hardly anyone has heard of the name, people will shun it and say "It won't ever beat a Steinway." Utter crap. I've played crappy Yamaha and Steinway pianos that even Pearl River beats. ANYWAYS, wonderful video and performance here
Michiel, I thought you played beautifully. I've read everyone else's comments. Some people are giving you genuine advice. Please take it. We all can grow in our art. Dismiss the criticism. You should be able to tell the difference. I'm looking forward to your other works. Best wishes.
this performance really sucks!

However, Yamaha piano is not so bad or terrible, as you say.

I know, the Steinway piano is wonderful.

It takes this kind of music to really open up somebodies eyes and see the impact they have created on the world, and try to change it. Thank you.

Schön und nachdenklich. Es schmerzt und macht betroffen wenn man weiß welche Ängste und Qualen Menschen in dieser Zeit ausstehen mußten.
Thanks for nice Video and Music.

I love your playing the piano. You have got long fingers. It's fortunate. :D
Amazing ^^

@judith2aqueipo
Judith may I ask, does being Jewish have anything to do with loving Chopin's music, or any music for that matter?
malayrojak 6 months ago
@malayrojak No, but I said that because''The Pianist movie'' is based on Szpilman's life (Władysław Szpilman is a Jewish pianist who survived the Holocaust)

Is the appreciation for such music far more important than whether we call it a song or a piece. Beautiful rendition!!

Wow...

But am I the only one who has ever wondered how it is that, in the completely devastated ruins of what used to be a town district, our main character is able to find a lovely piano - totally undamaged and in tune!?
neon854 9 months ago
Lovely! Really enjoyed it! Tanks for this...
MightyMadMax1 9 months ago
@russ2246 i speak from strictly personal experience. as a concert pianist who plays only romantic era music for the most part, i have played on hundreds of pianos from dozens of brands. steinway and bosendorfer have always sounded the best to me. once again, just my own opinion from experience.
koolkikij 9 months ago
Do you have any recommendations how to learn how to play the song

the presto in the end is way way to slow, other then that it was ok

volimsline 9 months ago
Really quite a beautiful rendition of the piece. I do feel that there could be a lot more structure involved here and particularly m 93 thru 104 which needs to begin truly pp and return to it in m 100. It's a tough shot. I know. 44 thru 64 nicely done. M 69-well, that is a 1/16th note there at the end. I loved 206 and 207 but il piu forte possible means just that. Nice tempo though. The rest of the cadence is brilliantly developed and i just love it. From m 208 on is brilliant. Love it!

@1black1small1moon while I too feel it would sound better on a Steinway, for ex., it is still a great performance, IMO
koolkikij 10 months ago
