Actually it's a highly limited system because of the varying ballistics due to constantly changing barrel length. Metal Storm is only marketing weapons that don't depend heavily on accuracy, such as mortar systems. Also, it effectively does require a primer (the electrical triggers), a striker (the fire control computer) and a casing (the barrel insert).

It's called a cyclic fire rate. It's the same as your car can go at sixty miles per hour for one mile. And your shotgun fired 1 round, this thing fired 180. Even if you take into account it has 38 barrels, that's 5 rounds from one barrel at ~27,777 RPM.

Of course since the action has no cycle of function it technically doesn't have a cyclic fire rate at all, but...

The shots are shot individually and not simultaneously, therefore, the speed of the intervals can be measured in shots per minute. 180 rounds. That's 5 rounds that would have to be loaded in each barrel. The advantage of no jamming is horribly off-set by the reload time. An M-60 should be able to be reloaded in no more that 15 seconds. A 5 man crew may take a minute to reload this. This is a waste of money.

For instance, they have developed a handgun that fires 3 rounds where the 2nd & 3rd bullet enter the same hole as the first.
