I must see this movie, now that Elizabeth is gone, I'm obsessed with seeing all her movies & this is one I've never seen! So sad, what an actress, & icon
This is my favorite, bad movie. Kate Hepburn is the devouring, sick mother who produces a homosexual son (how 1950's Freudian). The young, voluptuous Liz supplants the now older Kate to attract lovers for the gay son in Europe. But, he is later eaten (maybe, literally?) by hot, impoverished beach boys. Psychiatrist Montgomery Clift's attempts to lobotomize Liz fail (because she remembers the horrid details), to Kate's dismay. Monty and Liz are live happily, except he's gay, himself
This movie is really great with outstanding performances of all main characters. It's so interesting to see such a movie where in no time is said that Sebastian is gay or homosexuals...it is that shy. I think the censors didn't cut these scenes because they think that Sebastian is an evil person and he got the right punishment at the end. I can't believe that the censors did not noticed the underlining gay subject.
Let me see if I have this right; a sexy girl and her gay cousin vacation in spain, or was it portugal. The gay cousin uses her as bait to pick up guys who, starving nearly to death, eat him. Really believable plot huh? Yeah, sure it was for 1961. What I don't understand is if he (Cousin Sebastian) had to use her as bait, wouldn't that mean that the guys were potentially attracted to girls? Who could believe such a plot back then?
I don't fault your logic however poverty can induce young desperate men to have sex with other men even if they aren't gay. IT happens today. In the film what spurred on the attack wasn't the gay cousin's sexual orientation but his dismissal of the young men clamoring for "work" from him to which he refused arrogantly. So this character was a victim of cannibalism mostly b/c his was a rich arrogant jerk who didn't realize he had no allies among the poor men surrounding him.
@dallaskenn You forget that he would throw money at the starving boys...they would have sex with him for money but resented him and eventually turned on him and killed him. Very plausible.
Check out Ciprina Spizzirri's performance of Suddenly Last Summer performed at Questors Theatre, London.

a Tennessee Williams play with Hepburn and Taylor performances. This is as good as it gets.

Elizabeth "AID$" Taylor had a voice that sounded like a fingernail scraping a chalkboard. (Not to mention the poor pronunciatia.)
How did this untalented cow ever get to be a 'star'?
And we LOVE her 'torpedo tits' bra!

I think of this as a horror movie, really--both psychological and physical horror.
If you've never seen it, by all means rent it--it's worth your time.--arnie113

Liz Taylor was at her peak in terms of physical presence and performance in this classic movie.
