Cool dude. Thats just an original riff that I've had lying around for a while but not turned into a full song yet. The first part is an F maj 3rd with a palm muted D and a C maj 3rd with a palm muted A. Then it just goes into Amin in a mixture of maj and min 3rds with an open A palm mute finished with G5 and G#5. If you get famous playing that riff you'd better pay me royalties!!! Hahaha ;-)
cheers bro - breaking it down has made it seem quiite simple - only problem is remembering where you are since its quite a long riff, not like sweet child of mine etc. where and what did you get Paul to sign? nice pic at the end!
cheers bro - breaking it down has made it seem quiite simple - only problem is remembering where you are since its quite a long riff, not like sweet child of mine etc. where and what did you get Paul to sign? nice pic at the end!
Yes it is quite a long meandering type of run that sounds a lot harder than it really is. To be honest I spent quite a lot of time figuring it out.
The guitar is the actual guitar that Paul played at the Auckland clinic in March 2007. He has signed the back of the headstock. I hardly play that guitar simply cos the mighty PG himself played it. I still have the strings that he used in that show!! Kind of obsessive really.
haha, yeah i probly would have done the same thing too. I cant believe i missed the cliniic. Ive got a 59 reissue at home - totally miss it. In Victoria here, im making do with my not so heavy/notsovaluable/practical California Fat Strat. USA made, but finished in mexico. Played it through a very nice but again cost effective Roland Cube 20X. They have some monster tones through a not so necessarily loud box - a great bedroom jamming tool ;-)
I assume you fell asleep that night because you got tired from playing your adlib and upon waking up you're like "oh shit, i forgot about the lesson" LOL
amazing post dude, coz of the simple way in which u broke it down, i was able to learn in less than one day (i am an amateur pls understand). All in all amazing work and great teaching , i am going to check all your lessons from this point onwards
thank you for posting the video u get 10 points on a scale of 10 for this
The PG guitar has Dimarzio PAF Pro's in the neck and bridge positions
I'm running this into a VM 100 watt head (2466)
I'm using the high dynamic range with both the body and detail set to around 2/3 of the way up. The presence on the amp is all the way up. I don't really remember how the eq was set but on the VM these are minimal influence to the overall tone anyways.
You're good but dude!!! STICK on what you are supposed to do!! if you're going to teach the song just play the song and then teach!!! Dont shred and shred and shred!!
Yeah point taken. I've had alot of feedback with respect to that. Next time I'll. just get straight to the point. Thanks for having the patience to watch.
Thanks a lot for this video :D I´ve been trying to play the intro for three years without success until now! Thans man you rock! :D
That PGM 300, is it a easy guitar to play for a guy with short fingers and small hands?
Ibanez will reissue PGM 301 this fall and im kind of intressed in that one thought i prefer the PGM 300 :) But i don´t want to buy a guitar for 25500 swedish crowns and not being able to enjoy it xD
PGM 300 is similar in design so please tell me about the guitarr! :)
Coolness! I'm very happy that the lesson has helped. It is kind of tricky with all the positional shifts involved but once you have it down its really not too bad. The PGM301 is a nice guitar. Its very light (lighter than an RG) and the neck is slightly bigger than an original Ibanez Wizard neck but not as big as the Wizard II neck. It is a very easy guitar to play. If you like Jems and RGs then you will like the PGM. It is also very bright sounding (lots of treble). Go get one!!
Well sooooorrrrryyy. Maybe you should stay in your swamp.
As for my sloppy playing, at least I'm game enough to post my sloppy playing on here than just not post any vids and comment negatively on other peoples stuff.
I think at the time the guitar is half a step down. The original recording by Mr Big was in standard and when Paul Gilbert performs it live in his solo band he plays it a whole step down. I think this may be to accomadate his vocal range better.
Excellent bit... Is there any chance you could expand a bit with "Chords for Dummies"? Have played for years, but by ear and without lessons. Can't read music and don't know notes, but I can decipher those drawings with frets and dots for finger placements (not the chord diagrams I've found in some searches) Any chance I could get a little cheat sheet on the chords you're playing after the riff? Have got your intro down pretty well and just looking to finish off... Any help appreciated!
First of all: Awesome breakdown! You really did a great job on it, thumbs up!
I just wanted to add that, after reading your comment on "How PG gets it really out there" is becouse he makes it sound very fluid and clean, which is probably becouse he uses his fingers. with a pick it tends to sound rather harsh and sharp (depending on the pick). I think it can be compared to legato and alternate picking... both techniques sound very different. Anyways, great vid and keep rocking dude!
No no ur the best dude!! I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson. As for the dodgy night and day shots its cos I kept cracking up in front of the camera so I had to do multiple takes at different times of the day!!
I'm just glad that it helps you. I'm playing the intro a bit too fast in this vid so keep that in mind when you're learning it and playing it back to yourself.
just come across your video,...nice playing and nice equipment. i happen to have marshall vintage modern as well. did you use any boost pedal while using this amp? if so, how? i cant boost the level volume using this amp.
Thanks..... would be great to see more video from you
Them Marshall VMs are great eh? I use a power attenuator to push the power section really hard at a neighborhood friendly volume. Adds a whole new dimension to the amp.
I think that I'm a little off on the phrasing though. Esp the slide at the end. Somehow Paul makes it sound real "out there" and it kind of makes the riff sound like a guitar being played backwards. I can't seem to be able to achieve that. At least to my ears anyways. As for your 1,2,3,4.. 11 thats cos you've got Dream Theater syndrome where everything has to be in some odd ball time signature ;-). At least you can count while you play! I get totally lost if I do that.
Yeah its from Paul's Mr Big live solo spot. Unfortunately I don't have the tabs for this and spent a while listening how he plays that particular lick (I don't think I'm playing it entirely correct either). It begins with a string skipped Emin triad arpegio in the 12the position with varying permutations of those three notes (G, E, and B). The little tail at the end of the lick is a D maj arpegio played in the 10th position. I hope this helps you on your conquest to learn the lick!
The key thing with the VM is the way you set the EQ. It easily pulls off the general rock sounds of the late 70s/early-mid 80s. To really get a heavier sound I don't use the mid boost control cos that makes it real nasal. Set high presence, low treble, the preamp Detail at around 3/4 up and the body control around half way up. I also cut the mid knob to around 1/3 up and the bass up 2/3.
yeah ur sound is very cool, i use Laney GH50l after i bought it i read he changed to marshall ahaha i get owned ;P but i really like laney , you play nice blablabla all see it ;D But i have question about this ,do u use neck or bridge pickup for this song,??
I always wanted a Laney GH100L but my local store stopped selling Laney. They are a good amp and at the end of the day you can't just keep using what your fav players use.
may i ask you how many days did you finish that song beacause look at your background at the start and at 1:41

GATvsGAT 4 years ago
Excellent! Thank you for the tip.
