I think part of the reason the birthday party broke up (apart from the tension and drugs) is they were so hugely disappointed by the British music scene when they arrived in London they lost a lot of momentum through lack of inspiration... I don't blame them really...

The "girl" is Merle Ginsberg, who was later an entertainment personality on a show (ET?). And yes, those guys WERE blitz out of their minds. They walked into the studio with a bottle (or two) and by the time their interview was up, they were nearly done with it, or on their second (I can't remember). They stayed in the back watching Lydia Lunch being interviewed, and then they stumbled up. The girl annoucer at the end is Dawn Eden, who gave up rock'n'roll for Jesus and chastity.

Nick Cave has had a mildly successful career since. As for Jim Foetis/Clint Ruin he seems to have sobered up (I assume).
