I mean if you invent a lightsaber style that only you can master and happens to be superior to ALL other techniques out there, then there's absolutely no reason why he can't not be considered the best jedi in terms of lightsaber skills. Windu didn't lose to palpatine. He won. If it wasn't for Anakin being there at the time, he would have killed palpatine, thus windu is a better sworsman.
Palpatine was playing possum. In order for Anakin to take the critical step and turn, Palpatine set him up for the act of betrayal. There's no way of knowing, in a fight to the death, who would have really won between Windu and Palpatine. After all, it wasn't exactly Palpatine's intention to simply kill the Jedi Master, but to have Anakin aid in it. Once Anakin did, he belonged to the Sith. This Mace fawning is ridiculous.
Yoda was, obviously, the most skilled swordsman at the time. If Sidious was able to fight Yoda to a stalemate, then why would he lose to Mace? Mace is very skilled, but not more than Sidious. Like MicheasTheMighty said, Sidious just wanted Anakin to turn, which is why he faked losing. He knew Anakin would be too inpatient and try and stop Mace from killing Sidious. He also knew that Anakin would betray Mace and the Jedi.
Why 'obviously'? Mace is often regarded as the better of the two with the lightsaber, while Yoda excels him with the Force.
That's a theory, a very plausible one at that, but still just a theory. Personally I believe it, but I do believe Palpy was being overpowered by Mace and simply could not handle him.
Because the knowledge of the force and medichlorian count is what makes Jedi more powerful than others. Anakin had the highest medichlorian count, but his knowledge of the force was not yet perfected, so he was incredibly powerful for his age. Yoda, however, had the second highest recorded medichlorian count AND had huge understanding and knowledge of the force, thus making him the most powerful Jedi in all of the order. Mace would be second in this regard, but both would be surpassed by Anakin.
But, Mace uses Vaapad, which is a style of fighting used with only the most advanced Jedi, It uses anger and fear, much like Sith fighting, and you would have to be the best to control it. Now, if I'm not mistaken, Yoda does not use this style, he cannot control it (or he just plain doesn't like it) which would Make Mace a better Jedi.
It's cannon that few Jedi were ever known to be better swordsman than Mace. Yoda and Dooku were one, and seeing as how the Jedi never knew of Sidious until it was too late, and that Sidious was Dooku's master, it's pretty safe to say Sidious is probably a better swordsman than Windu.
why even goerge lucas flat out says mace beat him pure and simple out skilled him and would have killed him had anakin not shown up the scene even clearly shows him getting kicked in his face and disarmed for his trouble. Also the greatest duelist ever for either jedi or sith was exar kun with yoda mace and dooku taking spot on after him
@Skjaa i am going to try and say something about the style. that style does use anger and fear but it is only for people who had a dark past about themselves that they can learn the style. also the style of fighting allows you to enjoy the battle but you had to be careful not to push it or you could be influenced to the dark side. also the style was based on a creature that would attack you with many arms that you did not know how many there was until it was dead lol.
Yoda could only beat Mace when he wasn't using Vaapad, otherwise he would have lost. Yoda has said it before,(or someone has) Mace Windu is unbeatable when he uses Vaapad.
Actually Mace Windu is considered in the top 3 saberists of all time (behind Exar Kun and Darth Maul). And yoda isn't as "skilled" with a saber as people think he is. Yoda is old and he is becoming physically weak (he even points this out himself). But he uses the force to move and fight the way he does.
and the emperor didnt really beat yoda, it was pretty even, what it boiled down to, is when they went flying yoda couldnt get a grip and pull himself up, while the emperor was able too. but what ever man even if george lukas put out a video saying sidious is 5 million times more powerfull than any jedi...windu is still the friggin man in my opinion.
i dont think palpatine is that much better than windu or yoda, i mean, everything widu does, he's always calm, and does things with ease like he's not even trying.i do think palpatine manipulated the situation a little, but i dont think he could defeat windu without using his force abilities. he was going all out against yoda, and i really dont think yoda is as good a swordsmen as windu.

I say mace windu is the best simply because nobody can touch his shit. I mean if you invent a lightsaber style that only you can master and happens to be superior to ALL other techniques out there, then there's absolutely no reason why he can't not be considered the best jedi in terms of lightsaber skills. And furthermore, I say he's one of the smartest/stable ones too because everyone who tries to do vaapad results in head implosion.

Windu didn't lose to palpatine. He won. If it wasn't for Anakin being there at the time, he would have killed palpatine, thus windu is a better sworsman.

Palpatine was playing possum. In order for Anakin to take the critical step and turn, Palpatine set him up for the act of betrayal. There's no way of knowing, in a fight to the death, who would have really won between Windu and Palpatine. After all, it wasn't exactly Palpatine's intention to simply kill the Jedi Master, but to have Anakin aid in it. Once Anakin did, he belonged to the Sith. This Mace fawning is ridiculous.

Regardless, Mace Windu was a far more proficient saberist (probably one of, if not THE best Saberists to have ever existed)
Naturally, Palpatine was much more proficient with the Force - he relied on deceiving people with words and the Force as opposed to with a saber.

Yoda was, obviously, the most skilled swordsman at the time. If Sidious was able to fight Yoda to a stalemate, then why would he lose to Mace? Mace is very skilled, but not more than Sidious. Like MicheasTheMighty said, Sidious just wanted Anakin to turn, which is why he faked losing. He knew Anakin would be too inpatient and try and stop Mace from killing Sidious. He also knew that Anakin would betray Mace and the Jedi.

Why 'obviously'? Mace is often regarded as the better of the two with the lightsaber, while Yoda excels him with the Force.
That's a theory, a very plausible one at that, but still just a theory. Personally I believe it, but I do believe Palpy was being overpowered by Mace and simply could not handle him.

Because the knowledge of the force and medichlorian count is what makes Jedi more powerful than others. Anakin had the highest medichlorian count, but his knowledge of the force was not yet perfected, so he was incredibly powerful for his age. Yoda, however, had the second highest recorded medichlorian count AND had huge understanding and knowledge of the force, thus making him the most powerful Jedi in all of the order. Mace would be second in this regard, but both would be surpassed by Anakin.

But, Mace uses Vaapad, which is a style of fighting used with only the most advanced Jedi, It uses anger and fear, much like Sith fighting, and you would have to be the best to control it. Now, if I'm not mistaken, Yoda does not use this style, he cannot control it (or he just plain doesn't like it) which would Make Mace a better Jedi.

It's cannon that few Jedi were ever known to be better swordsman than Mace. Yoda and Dooku were one, and seeing as how the Jedi never knew of Sidious until it was too late, and that Sidious was Dooku's master, it's pretty safe to say Sidious is probably a better swordsman than Windu.

why even goerge lucas flat out says mace beat him pure and simple out skilled him and would have killed him had anakin not shown up the scene even clearly shows him getting kicked in his face and disarmed for his trouble. Also the greatest duelist ever for either jedi or sith was exar kun with yoda mace and dooku taking spot on after him

@Skjaa i am going to try and say something about the style. that style does use anger and fear but it is only for people who had a dark past about themselves that they can learn the style. also the style of fighting allows you to enjoy the battle but you had to be careful not to push it or you could be influenced to the dark side. also the style was based on a creature that would attack you with many arms that you did not know how many there was until it was dead lol.

Yoda could only beat Mace when he wasn't using Vaapad, otherwise he would have lost. Yoda has said it before,(or someone has) Mace Windu is unbeatable when he uses Vaapad.

Actually Mace Windu is considered in the top 3 saberists of all time (behind Exar Kun and Darth Maul). And yoda isn't as "skilled" with a saber as people think he is. Yoda is old and he is becoming physically weak (he even points this out himself). But he uses the force to move and fight the way he does.

and the emperor didnt really beat yoda, it was pretty even, what it boiled down to, is when they went flying yoda couldnt get a grip and pull himself up, while the emperor was able too. but what ever man even if george lukas put out a video saying sidious is 5 million times more powerfull than any jedi...windu is still the friggin man in my opinion.

i dont think palpatine is that much better than windu or yoda, i mean, everything widu does, he's always calm, and does things with ease like he's not even trying.i do think palpatine manipulated the situation a little, but i dont think he could defeat windu without using his force abilities. he was going all out against yoda, and i really dont think yoda is as good a swordsmen as windu.

Thats mainly wikipedia but wookieepedia relies on the Star Wars database and the people at the Database have there head up there ass half the time, for example the Tartan patrol cruiser from Empire at War is supposedly 600 metres long! even though its actually about the same size as a corrilian corvette
