For me Portnoy owns Mangini when is comes to double bass and cymbal work. But Mangini is a bit more technical and does some awesome snare and drum work. Imagine if Portnoy came back and they had 2 kits on stage and both of them playing at the same time each doing different highlights in the songs and a huge drum battle solo! That would be epic...

The whole intro thing is what makes Portnoy great. He knows how to build something that feels natural and awesome. I really like it when the music has a round whole feeling !.

But when he starts "singing" and doing his routine in verses I get very bored and it doesn't have a feel I can get. - It could be that when they as a band make the music they only sometimes get that groove together, and for a large part doesn't feel the same thing there. - Could be why the split came.

@MrSephihroth I will add that in my opinion his drumming in the verses on the previous albums was spot on perfect. Its like the old albums don't have any dislike moments at all. The newer albums always for me have 2-3 numbers I don't really like.

But I'm a huge fan of both Dream theater and Portnoy. - Its all legendary allready..

10:18 Invisible crash hit! Man, I really miss those times when MP released prefect drum cams like Drummavarium or Drums of Thought. I saw a lot of errors in latest releases, like Silver drumming or LTE Live in LA

@innerchaos08 Neither of those was perfect either. If you listen and look, some of the parts are different. The first thing you play in the studio isn't whats going to end up on the song at the end, if it is, then you have no creativity. A missed cymbal crash is because when your making up parts, sometimes your brain fumbles over ideas. Even DT is human. As for the live in LA LTE, he improvises, and so does every other person on that stage.

@Frossiah I'm not talking about pattern changes in live performances or changes in a drumcam dvd. I´m talking about those problems with audio/video sync in the latest releases. In drummavarium I hear what MP is playing in drums. Instead, in BC&SDrumming, I hear a lot of invisible changes that I couldn't see in the video. Even in LTE Live in LA we could hear drums breaks while portnoy is playing other things -get an eye on Acid rain. It's nothing about performance, only post-production problems

@Frossiah Nope, I'm talking about youtube clips. I had a few MP drum cams DVD. That's why I'm talking about post-production sync problem.

For example, just seach on youtube Acid Rain Live - Liquid Tension Experiment - Live in LA and watch carefully at 8:32 and you'll see what I'm talking about. Errors like these didn't appear in LSF New York, Budokan o Score dvd's.

@innerchaos08 thats a good point...analyzing the drum cam videos( i have all of them), and paying special attention to what portnoy is playing, i noticed that the audio is the same audio of the studio. What i think is that portnoy plays the song several times on a studio, and he puts on the drum cam dvd the best perfomance. On drums of tought, and sysdrumatic chaos, he gattered the best perfomances, thats y he sometimes has different clothes...BC&S drumming sucks in that matter.

style of the arrangement is so musical with MP's playing. He is one of those musicisians that lead. Remember the first time you heard him play. It was something really different. You always want more. Spectacular drum "talk"

I think Mangini has super talent and drive. He really needs his own band. Take a different road with a new sound.

His playing (Portnoy's) is certainly much more mature, that's nice... lots of good influences are there!!!. But unfortunately that wasn't enough to avoid the split up with the other components of Dream Theater... and I think in someway, both won with that fact (the split up). It's just a personal opinion!.

I always love the way he fine tunes his sound in the studio for every album. Unlike most drummers who's kits actually sound way to processed,flat and no punch, (gavin) his kits always sound amazingly natural. Tama really does produce the best drum kits!
