Besides, I think you're forgetting that to charge the batteries in a Volt takes time that most of us don't have. Those who do own one are in that very small percentage who rarely need the gas engine. To get 5,000 more owners will be monumentally more difficult than getting that first 5,000 to buy one.

Regardless, that is false. While technology has a contribution to the overall car reliability, it is a quite small fraction in comparison to testing and development. In other words, as long as Ford uses higher quality materials and invests their money into testing their vehicles more religiously, there is no need in copying any brand. As a matter of fact, with the new Ford CEO, I believe that Honda will be behind Ford in reliability within 5-7 years.
