Can someone explain what was significant about this game? Michigan had already lost earlier in the year, and this one was against Indiana, not exactly a powerhouse. What am I missing?
@Spartan00000000 Who are you? Corso? Cause the rule wasn't changed until AFTER the 1979 season. Jesus, get your facts straight before you post stupid stuff
Jeremy Gallon almost pulled a Carter against Notre Dame last month. I wish he had. That would have been even more exciting than scoring on the next play when they did.
Great play. At the end of the season though, both Michigan and Indiana had the same overall record: 8 wins, 4 losses. Michigan lost to North Carolina in the Gator Bowl while Indiana beat BYU in the Holiday Bowl.
I was 7 years old and on the 40 yardline for this game. I'm 39 now and, till this day I have never..ever..EVER heard a crowd as loud as I heard that day. My brother and my father held my hands as we rushed the field. Even as a child,I felt like I belonged with my adult suroundings. I will remember that day as long as I live. UFER!
I was at that game (my Junior year) and that was still the most memorable moment in sports for me. AC is still my favorite Wolverine followed closely by Woodson. GO BLUE
This play indirectly lead to Corso showing up on your TV every Saturday wearing some dumb ass mascot head. When Ufer went into the 3rd person you knew something big was happening. Ufer, Bo and Yost are sitting around Valhalla watching it now and grinning ear to ear.
I'm 29 yrs old, so I don't really remember Bob Ufer. But I now know why my dad told me he was the best! This guy is great!!!! He holds nothing back and does not care if you think hes bias. GO BLUE!!!!!
I was 14 years old and working in the yard with my parents and I heard Ufer make this call on the radio, and it still brings me goose bumps hearing it again.
Ufer was great, I remember when U of M was playing Ohio State and as the buckeyes were coming onto the field Ufer said " Here comes Darth Vader Earle Bruce and his scarlett and gray stormtroopers"!!!
Didn't hear the original call by Bob Ufer but that was AWESOME!! And seeing Bo jumping around like he just won the lottery was priceless!! Such a classic play in Michigan history...GO, BLUE!!
Wingin' Johnny Wangler: the only one who could turn Bo's ground game into a pure air assault and get Bo his first Rose Bowl win (after SO many failed tries).
Anthony Carter on the skinny post. Great coaching by Corso. Instead of going for the win when they made it 21-20, he kicked the point FOR A TIE!! No wonder he;s on TV putting on mascot heads. As a coach, LEE CORSO WAS A LOSER!!
Don't recall ever hearing of Bob Ufer, but to hear him go totally crazy is refreshing!! In this age of sterile announcers, its nothing like hearing a "homer" who loves his team. Hearing him in tears helps me to remember why I absolutely love college football!!!
this was a great play, you feel for both sides here. what a play for michigan, i think they were geting to the point of the season where they were becoming complacent and indiana was as corso would say "sneaking around the chicken coup". indiana was'nt that bad that season, if not for this loss coupled with the close loss against colorado earlier that season, indiana was good enough to win 10 games. it was sad how michigan's season tappered off soon after this win with 3 close losses.
Someone asked me when I became such a big Michigan fan.
Oct 27, 1979: I'd already lived in Ann Arbor 5 years - and of course followed the Wolverines. On that day - I was in my townhouse a good two miles away when Carter made that touchdown. You could hear that tremendous roar of the crowd from that far away. That was the day I realized what the Michigan Wolverines were: legendary!
Ufer is so cool to listen to, at least if you're a Michigan fan.
My dad was a sportswriter in the press box for this game. He said that when this play happened, all but himself and two other writers had left to go down to the locker room (those writers thought the game was over).
My dad and the other two writers had to go down and describe the play to all the other writers who missed it.
Look at 0:37 - the ball carrier deliberately throws a backward pass (lateral) out of bounds. It feels like a logical thing to do, but is/was it legal?
Maybe this was the pinnacle for Michigan football..no more Ufer, no more Bo...AC is around..Dont knowif we are on the right path now..sorry for the downer. GO Blue!
I remember that play like it was yesterday. Bob Ufer said back in 1979 that Johnny Wangler to Anthony Carter will be heard till another 100 years of Michigan football is played. Well that was 29 years ago and it is still being heard.
May God Bless Bob's Cotton Pickin' Maize & Blue Michigan heart.
I was at A.C's last home game when he was a senior. They announced all the seniors and saved Carter for last. Announcer says "one more player to introduce." The big house went absolutely nuts. It was awesome.
Okay, great moment for you Michigan fans. But being from Indiana, this one play sums up Indiana football. Totally inept players and coaches. Corso you idiot, go for two after you made it 21-20. Instead, Mr. College Football Gameday kicks the point and PLAYS FOR THE TIE! HELLO! As Herman Edwards would say, you play to win! Carter scored thanks to some of the worst tackling you will ever see. This is why Indiana is a basketball school. GRRRR!!!!
No one at UM talks about the play before the TD, but they made the intentional-fumble-out-of-bounds play illegal the next year as a result of that play. Funny thing is the ball went straight to Corso. Great clutch play, I have to admit, but it does sum up IU football.
I was there! Also have an unused ticket stub (we only used 4 of 5 tickets that day) that I keep with me on my nightstand. Probably the only one that exists.
I was at that game. What was really amazing was that a large part of the crowd had left early to try to beat the rush out of the parking lot.
