  • english is used more common throughout the world.

Even during the war with diff Asian countries, they used ENGLISH to communicate.

  • Teaching in Korea aids and abets child abusers. If you go, don't be afraid to intervene in a "caning."

  • The video stated that English is 3rd in "Top Languages" which is very vague. It may be the 3rd most spoken language by population.

However, if you have a business job dealing with China, hindi, or pretty much anywhere it's nearly 100% English from my experience.

Chinese is a great language, but it's not a very good Business language. These kids were speaking about their future in business or getting jobs and I agree with them 100%. English is the top choice!

  • Ha! Make you White! lol 4:41 -- That is funny

  • Comment removed

  • Haha! Make you White ;-p

  • A long, long time ago it was Greek, and then Latin that were the languages of trade and government(at least in Europe). Up till 'bout 60 years ago French was the hands down international language. After WW2 and with the rise of American media (Hollywood, music, pop culture) in the world English is know the #1 world language.

In every country in the world there are people that speak English. Chinese is hard as hell to learn, and it's NOT widely spoken same as Hindi. English will be #1 forever!

  • Actually the reason English is popular is not because of Americans but the English people themselves. Great Britain made America. They also made Australia. They even made Indian English accent. LOL. They made Hong Kong a glorious city.

Don't get me wrong. I just wanna add my opinion.

  • Yep. Thats true. Its also popular though in todays world because of Great Britain & America have a strong influence in the world. Its hard for people who speak a latin based language to speak an Asian language because its totally different & same backwards.. Im going to try to learn Chinese & Japanese one day. Right now Im working on my spanish because I could actually use that were I live were those I couldnt... : /

  • Motivational and hillarious. I hope to teach English and travel one day!

  • English is a universal language of course. But I usually find most of English native speakers are too proud of their language. So they end up not to learn any other language. I could be wrong.

  • you are correct!

  • For instance, I'm not an English native speaker but I know English, not much but at least to write comments in youtube LOL. And I learned French, Thai, and now learn Korean. I can use all of them in some particular ways. Actually I'm studying in Korea and I've seen a lot of English speaking dumbie come to teach English in Korea. They know nothing when Koreans talk bad about them in front of them. Some stay over 3 years but they learn nothing. That's pathetic. They are lazy cos of their English.

  • The same thing happen in my country, a pathetic american family came to my school, because they moved to my country, and they haven't learned our language, and yet, we learned their language and ours, they say is too hard for them, stupid gringos!

  • There are many English teachers here who do try to learn Korean. I don't think it's fair to generalize because you know a few people are too lazy to try. Korean is a very difficult language for English speakers to learn. I know, I've been trying for 8 years....it's not easy!!!!!!

  • yes I know, but it doesnt matter how hard the language is, if we have to learn their language, they should too, and yes I know it's not so easy to learn english, I've been learning like 5 years, and I still have some problems, sorry if I spelled something wrongs :D.

  • How are we lazy because of our english? Im tring very hard to learn different languages thank you very much lol.. maybe they arent planing on staying that long.. idk.. But I know how that goes.. my spanish teacher doesnt really even try to learn english so its hard for me to learn.. but im studying... Im actually getting decent in it... just need to learn how to spell.. I know enough to get around.. my 2nd year in learning.. after I finish do you know of any languages I should learn after?

  • very true good comment

  • its cause english is a offical language and is the most widely learnt language!

  • !Que interesante!

  • Do you know what?. It is another way to care people about learning English.

  • eng is a universal language!! :)

  • English is one of teh most hardest languages to learn as it doesnt follow a regular pattern such like French or Japanese for example.

  • When I first came to America I learned English really fast, I think. My mom said that.

    I didn't know evern a little American.

I watched a lot of American cartoons. ^^

  • You should searcg "teacherross" for real teaching.

  • I'm a Taiwanese. My English is badly!A high school student learned English words(keys) only 1000~4000 and the idiom laarned under.

These high school students that one of them is me!

  • What movie was that from?

  • the matrix

  • your accent sucks

  • English is the new Latin.

  • no, english is the new "french" of the modern age.

  • When a Russian airplane is landing in a Chinese Airport, both the Russian Pilot and the Chinese manned air control tower are speaking English.

  • uh huh?

  • But...

In Soviet Russia, Chinese and English speak you!!!

  • True! English is the international language of aviation!

  • english is the international language of diplomacy, businesses.

  • the fact that a huge amount of population in china all over the world.. thats why mandarin is the most used language on earth.. but there are only few ppl who are learning chinese compared to the ppl who speak chinese as their first language

  • I think internationally english is the business language.

  • Interesting :)

  • I'm teaching English to Koreans here in the Philippines. I asked them why study English. They have various reasons. They want to have better job

  • I think this video is great. I'm curious to know though...is is harder to native speakers of color (ethnic minorities) to get hired in Korea than white candidates. I am a hispanic female looking for a position teaching secondary ed...

  • unfortunately, yes. i'm sure you can find a job, but you will probably experience discrimination in some way or another. if you have experience or a degree in education, then i'd recommend working in a public school or university rather than a private school (they're called hagwons).

  • hey hun, I don't think you should look at it that way, even though its realistic....you know, but no matter white/black/hispanic, you will be a MINORITY when you are in that country you know...

well im in the process of going to Korea and Im black. I had many offers and NO issues, I don't know if it is harder for a hispanic, but just do your best!!!!

    p.s~ hit me up whenever*****

  • what movie is that?

  • Have really never seen "the Matrix"? it's a great film, check it out!

  • Curt Porter is a douche bag

  • I thought that this video presented a very narrow vision of language learning. It just looks like a video rant from a native English speaking teacher who has been in Korea too long and is looking desperately for a way out.

  • not looking for a way out, looking for different opportunities to colonialize my culture upon the inwary masses ;)

  • i just completed a thesis about the identity of NES teachers in korea. what i found was that NES teachers are more intersted in pointing fingers at each other than actually discussing real issues in their field. in your comments you displayed this perfectly.

sure the video presents a narrow vision of what's really happening, but don't you think that linguistic imperialism is a topic worth discussing in a field that has has such a close connection with colonialism?

  • I think linguistic imperialism (LP) is worthy of discussion, but I think that the post-colonialist theory that informs the LP always leads to a negative conclusion on the status of a dominant language. This is a trapping of the theory. Your post about NES identity is bs. I am commenting on the video. This doesn't mean that I just point fingers at other NESs. I have presented at many international TESOL conferences and written papers on TESOL issues that relate to the 'real issues' of the field.

  • esljunkie- congrats on your papers and presentations. unfortunately, most TESOL conferences i've attended ignore larger social and political implications in EFL. to imply that issues like racism and imperialism aren't 'real' issues is arrogant and potentially very harmful. it also suggests a privileged position.

p-colonial theory is NOT just about linguistic imperialism- (it hasn't been since the 80's). i'll recommend some readings to you if you care to deepen your knowledge.

  • also, you were not just commenting on the video, you were commenting on the person who made the video. this is an important difference.

  • its just all about getting jobs , if like the big corporations didn't require people to speak good English nobody will learn it

  • all another system of Control

  • Good work

  • I really like this video, I hate english to death but it is useful because its spoken in a lot of places, its not the biggest language but its used in a lot of places rather then one big area.

I really do agree with this and I'm learning Japanese and have taken spanish for five years. Everybody should learn another language though, but they should choose what to learn rather then being forced to learn one language.

  • well done!

  • We don't need no education~~ very funny! good video

  • hey i found a job teaching in korea and at first the said they would get housing and 50/50 medical. but when i got the contract it expressly said there would be no medical..... what do you make of this?

  • you got ripped off, you're at a hakwon right? It doesn't get much better from there... they are breaking the law actually, not giving you medical insurance. Be careful, expect to be paid late, and have pay witheld for the most innane reasons. Get an Elementary school, or university Job. Much much much better, and more secure.

  • ok bro i know this is strange but would it be alright for me to send you the contract to look at. i got two one that pays like 3 mill won and one that pay 2 mill won.

  • obviously the one that is 700 bills a week doesn't include insurance or housing. the other one does but it seems like impossible to live off. they are two different schools SLP institute, and CDI

do you know any thing? apparently the first is affiliated with a college. i don't know about the other. thanks you really are saving a life.

  • If it's JeonJu SLP - I've worked there for two years. first year was alright, second year wasn't so good. but they provide housing and medical. If they're offering anything less than 2.1million won per month then avoid it, unless it's a university.

CDI has a good reputation, but a lot of turnover, that's all I've heard about it. they pay the most in Korea, but also demand a lot.

  • thanks bro

  • very well put! LOL

  • you were in it?!? COOL

  • haha cool video

    and

i was in that movie as well "Please Teach me English"

  • You were in that movie? Cool! Which character did you play?

  • haaha... you are funny. i like this video!

  • Ha ha! you funny,

  • Good job on the video--I can appreciate it, being a teacher in Korea...

  • i found a job in korea

  • It's a Korean Movie (and the Girl is Korean)The English title is "Please Teach me Englsih" It's funny.

  • You didn't know? Every Asian person is automatically Chinese if they're in America... ^^

  • haha..thats true... everyone here assumes that u are CHINESE if you are an Asian...

  • It probably sucks for the Europeans if they travel to East Asia, I'd bet five dollars that everyone there would automatically assume they are American and speak English.

...if only everyone would learn Esperanto... ...

  • thats not true at all and you know it. maybe it was a bunch of years ago but not every american you meet is ignorant to race.

  • actually, chinese isnt a race....that was the key problem in america. We couldnt call them asian like we do now, we use to use chinese as a synonym of asian.

  • whats the name of that movie? the chinese girl with english teacher, who tells her to choose a english nickname?
