Not too much hardcore stuff, and no overemphasis on a crazy singer, or an unreal drummer, or a guitarist that you just HAVE TO SEE. As a band, they are simply that catchy, energetic, 'more under the surface', powerful, and accessible musical release that every band should be. Every song is different, but they all hit those highs. I'm trying to take their songs in one by one, because the next one keeps blowing me away. There's no 'one hit' that defines these guys. This is music.
12 year old me would have found this song 'catchy, but not hard enough'. 14 year old would say that this isn't as 'deep' as Radiohead, or as 'hard to play' as a Pink Floyd song. 17 year old me would have said it was slightly generic, and wasn't doing anything 'new'. But I've never been more sure in my life. The Wrens are the band I have been looking for. They are that perfect blend of MUSIC. Not pretentious, and not excluding. Cont.
It's not just about making music an art form, or blending the lines between 'music video' and 'song'. It's not just about making a giant underlying statement. From what I've learned, music is EXACTLY what it is. MUSIC. The deeper, harder meaning is what you take from it. The Wrens simply pour their hearts out, and not to 'define' anything, or pave any crazy roads or to take a crap and call it art. They simply do everything they do absolutely RIGHT. Cont.
The Wrens are the greatest band of all time. This is my conclusion after many, many, many bands, and many phases, including Classic Rock, Heavy Metal, Nu-Rock, Prog Rock, Jazz and Blues, Any new emo/screamo stuff coming out, Alt Rock, Pop Rock, 'New Age' Rock, and everything that has been categorized. It's not just about crazy guitar solos, or fast 'emotional' guitar solos, or hitting the highest notes, or being 'different' or 'unique' and 'paving new ground'. Cont.
To me, it's the best album of the decade, though I don't think it's importance has been completely overlooked. A decade's music usually finds itself in a much different light 10-15 years down the road and this band and especially this LP has a huge cultish following.
The Wrens are very underrated, yes. This record may be one of the best ever, yet no one knows about it. How can this stay so far under the radar? It baffles me.
there's some story of how they didnt go for a record deal after negotiating with some giant label. The guy was so mad afterwards he said "the next band who walks through the door im going to make famous!" It was Creed. lol.
Seriously, other bands hear this and thank God that mostly braindead people buy music and exploit it. By the way, this and the cereal box version both end up in my top 20 of the decade, Oh. and "Hopeless " also ended up in my "Top 20 songs of the decade"
But they still haven't come to ireland so boo wrens! (I still love them really) and it doesn't look likely that they'll be hitting europe anytime soon :(
While no radiohead, The Wrens are one the greatest underated bands of the ninties. Check out Secacus from '96 or Silver from '93. Instead of selling out, this band faded away for 6 years. Great American Indie Rock.
yeah...as long as you don't mind the fact that waters and gilmour never played an honest note in their entire lives and the only emotion radiohead can convey is faux paranoia.

It has a nice "hook", but, like so many songs today, just a bit to predictable and repetitive.

Pretty good music, nice imagination.
I think the key thing is they genuinely seem to enjoy the music they play, they give it energy, they give it life.

Probably the best live band I have seen in my life. And I'm old and have seen plenty.
poglet 4 years ago 3
Totally agree. Saw them live in Seattle last year: totalfuckinggodhead. Never seen anything like it. Great energy, passion, and fun. Best band ever.

The Wrens are geniuses, anyone who says they shame every band in America, obviously doesn't know what they're talking about

I think what he was trying to say is they PUT every band in America to shame, which is what your saying. I agree!
