Look on the brighter side of things. Until now, Kelvin and Jill were virtually unknown to the Japanese public. Since this incident, they have made headlines in Japan. Before them, most of the Japanese people only knew of Bruce Lee (good figher), Jackie Chan (good entertainer), and perhaps Teresa Teng (good singer). Now, the new breed of Hong Kong entertainers are emerging: Edison Chan (sex scandal), Kelvin Kwan and Jill Vidal (drug scandal). I feel very sad for the people of Hong Kong.
That doesn't make the Canadian culture deserve such bad connection. Asian or Caucasian, some people just wanna try it to blend in the group of arse they hang out that's all, it happens even for people growing up outside of the Western territory, fact is drug abuse is a worldwide problem.
drug abuse is a worldwide problem yes, but the social acceptance and tolerance level of this fact varies between cultures and it just so happens that in north america, the topic of & practice of weed is more open than that of hong kong per se.
For whatever reason a person decides to take drugs (as you have mentioned peer pressure to be one), that's another issue.
That's true but certainly not all Canadians, I'm just saying there are exceptions. I have cousins living there and doing fine without them. Besides even if a person is allowed to legally drink alcohol smoke cigar or pot doesn't necessary mean he will do it. I never smoke or drink before, seriously.

Local culture? Why did you make it sound like everyone from Canada had drug issues? O_o

well it's true no? in western society, drug abuse is so much more common and widely accepted. it's not a stereotype, it's a fact.
