Thanks virtualmike13 for posting this. I have an '11 Street Bob, and while I have the SE slip ons, I am considering other options, so this was helpful!
You did the sound level tests confined within an indoor environment. The EPA restriction is designed for an open area without restriction to the sound waves, resulting in a lower db reading. I know that when my stock pipes were still stock, they were so quiet, you could never hear the exhaust, only the sound from the engine. And it was NO WHERE NEAR 90 db, more like 45 to 50 db. Very quiet. I put a 1 inch hole through mine and NOW they are closer to 90, but probably not more than that.
you must not drill all three baffles...because it won't have any difference in sound and the engine will need a power commander...you have to drill the first too only...
I did change both air filter and carb. The stock HD filter was replaced with a high flow K&N filter (cost about $45). I also replaced the jets in the carb (cost $20). Big performance and sound improvement for less than $100.
I was looking for a mod on a set of stock pipes I bought on ebay for my 04 Electra Glide and I think you gave me the answer I was looking for.I have SE slip-ons now installed by the original owner and they are a bit loud for me....I want to hear that V-Twin rumble but not loud either.
Hi run the bike today checked the plugs no more soot they are a lt tan color great acceleration now love the way it runs now you hit the nail on the head with your trick.Sleepy
Hey HippyHunterkj, I can't hear you...my Screaming Eagle II slip-ons are too loud. Maybe your husband has a deeper voice and I'll be able to hear him whining.
Hi my 2005 fatboy has a screamin eagle racing carb kit and breather kit and screamin eagle stage one mufflers.after it was purchased new ,because I had to run the choke for 5 to 10 miles and almost got hit pulling out in traffic with it coughing and stalling out. now the bike runs like it should with your trick.the bike is not too loud and should have run that way from the factory.great job THANKS Sleepy
Thats exactly what we need, bikers that are more obnoxious than they already are! First smoking was banned indoors, next will be loud exhausts...... Go common sense!!!!
and you probably wont SEE the motorcyclist you run over, or make a left turn in front of...but it helps if you HEAR us, and maybe, just maybe, you'll put your cell phone down pay attention to what your about to run over.
Let me get this straight: you want to partake in a risky activity, by foregoing modern safety features, then you blame me (who has never hit anyone) for your choice? On top of that, I should have to forfeit my right to quiet enjoyment of my property so you can 'be safe'. I've yet to see one study that shows 'loud pipes save lives'. How about this: drive a car. Being loud doesn't save cops, ambulances, or firetrucks; but you should be allowed to be obnoxious because of a pithy little saying.
Last time I checked, when cops, ambulances & firetrucks drive "code 3", they pass on the left, clear intersections, listen to dispatch & multi-task while driving faster. Nothing most Harley or motorcycle riders in general would ever do. Pipes are one more tool we can use to our advantage. Newsflash: The city is loud. You want quiet? Move to a cabin in the Ozarks. And you're right, there aren't any studies that show loud pipes save lives. There also aren't studies that refute it either. Pompus.
Beyond the NTSB saying that the 35-55 age range is the most at risk on motorcycles, and that motorcycle deaths have doubled since 97, I guess there is nothing. Your other argument, 'Cities are loud', is fantastic. So, one can make all the noise they want in the city? But you can't if you're out by a cabin? So Harley assholes should be shot for riding by a cabin? Is that OK? The city doesn't have to be loud, it's loud because idiots feel the need to prove they exist by making noise; get a life.
ok its going to sound a bit louder but you will fuck up the flow so you will lose back pressure and torque so id stick with the cycle shacks or buy a jap cruiser - thats right thats not goin to happen haha I love that superglide
I heard that if the bike had origanaly came with the stock mufflers and you punch them out like that the back pressure changes and the carb is more likely to cough.
so after doing somthing like this is it advisable to get the carb re adjusted to match the back pressure for the newly drilled holes?
After this muffler mod there was no coughing during operation. My setup is K&N high flow air filter, stock carb with larger jets and the stock HD mufflers with single hole in baffle as shown in video. There is still some back pressure in the mufflers.
I have tried Cycle Shack slip on mufflers which were much louder and less restrictive. There was coughing with the Cycle Shacks. They were too loud but this mod has sound that is not painful. Hope this helps.
Interesting-I drilled 5 3/8th holes in a 2000 harley sportster 883 after I had it for a year. It sounder deeper and had a richer tone quality-Muusicman43
redradiodog, I had an 07 sporty 883c and did this, the hole was bigger but it sounded great. Not too loud but the way you would expect it to. This made others stop asking me it if was running, but the neighbors didn't hate me.
Thank you for fixing your motorcycle... Many will appreciate this...

Hi, do you not need to do anything to the carbs or air filter? like you would if you done a stage 1

Keep being ignorant, there will be a lot of whiners about banned Harley's......Myrtle Beach anyone?

This mod only increases sound a small amount. Biggest gain is in roll on power.

I might try this. I have stock mufflers on my sportster.I would like for it to be a little louder but not as loud as most Harleys you hear.

First off thank you for the time and effort that you put into your post this has helped me alot.
I decided to punch out my stock mufflers and they sound sweet.
I do get a little cough now and then but not as bad as expected. I will try the K&N filter and bigger jets to see what that does to it.
I will do a video post for you to here it.
Thank you again. keep up the good work.
