Isn't the New Testament supposed to be God's new covenant with his believers? Doesn't it supersede everything in the Old Testament? I'm not even religious AT ALL and even I knew that! I love how some religious people quote whatever they think backs them up without even knowing what it means.
Polygyny was allowed under Mosaic law. Jesus did not outlaw it at any time.
In the Old Testament Sarah was held as the ideal wife. She selected mistresses & concubines for her husand. In the New Testament it is said you are "Sarah's daughter" if you follow her example. Therefore, polygyny is biblical.
You are correct. But gay "marriage", adultery, common law marriage, adoptions of children by anyone other than married couples, or other forms of alternate lifestyles were illegal as well. Times have changed. And laws have been altered with the transpiration of time.
In biblical time polygyny was lawful. Monogamy was mandated by pagans. The Bible warns LEARN NOT THE WAY OF THE HEATHEN. Therefore, we must obey the Divine Law.
It's all very simple - LDS, Catholicism, and Protestantism are all "Christian" teaching. Mosaic & Messianic law are all biblical teaching. There is a world of difference between mere Christian teaching as opposed to biblical teaching. The latter may not be very convenient in today's social-political climate. But in the Judgment Day all will have to answer for their failure to adhere to the Bible's law, not to human law.
Sarah who selected mistresses & concubines for her husband was praised in the New Testament: 1 Peter 3:6; Gal 4:22,23; Heb: 11,11. You are "Sarah's daughter" if you follow her example according to biblical as opposed to Christian teaching.
It is disingenuous for Mormons to say that these people have NOTHING to do w/ them. They came from your church & the LDS (Salt Lake) Church once did follow these exact same practices. Also, the LDS stil believe in polygamy even if it isn't practiced in this world. Mormon men are expected to practice it in the after life. If a wife dies, if a the husband takes a 2nd, both will be his eternal wives.
At this point in time they have nothing to do with us. They were a hundred r so years ago but in case you have not noticed a lot has changed since then. They might have came from our church but their leader is sitting in jail where he needs to be and ours is in SLC trying to better the world. Huge differences there
It is hard to better the world when you are still hiding behind lies. If their leader deserves to be in prison. Then both J. Smith & B. Young deserved to be jail. Jeffs acts EXACTLY the same way as they did. I am quite glad to see the Mormon Church improve itself, but the butterfly shouldn't lie about once having been a caterpillar. & the LDS (Salt Lake) only changed under pressure, not conviction.
As if bigamy wasn't illegal when J. Smith introduced the practice all the way back in Kirtland, Ohio. It was always illegal. B. Young simply took his followers out to an isolated place (rather like Jim Jones in Guyana) where legal accountability could be avoided.
The manifest lie that the LDS (SLC) has nothing to do w/ the FLDS. Obviously Monson's church has SOMETHING to do w/ them. SOMETHING, by definition, is not NOTHING.
They have had nothing to do with eachother since those who founded the FLDS left the church a long time ago. And no actually there was no law against it where they were when it was being practiced. The reason for going west had nothing to do with polygamy. That was mostly because the govenor of Missouri made it perfectly legal to kill all mormons. They had already killed Smith after inprisoning him unjustly. Which he willingly went to knowing he would die i would like to point out
There were anti-bigamy laws in Ohio, there were anti-bigamy laws in Illinois, there were anti-bigamy laws in Missouri. There were anti-bigamy laws in Mexico when Salt Lake was part of that country. Smith & Young broke the law everywhere they went, just like Jeffs. Smith was arrested basically for arson. He burned down a printing press that exposed his corruption. The main reason that Smith & Young were in legal trouble in the East WAS b/c of polygamy. Many people believed in their other ideas.
I doubt it Smith "knew" he would die. In Missouri, he had been imprisoned on a previous occasion & had been allowed to escape on a kind of political connivance. & I've heard this canard about an "extermination" order before. The order actually said "expell or exterminate." & please tell me, who were the 1st to talk about exterminations, the Mormons of the Missouri gov't?
I can tell you the mormons never hunted down the Missouri govt or people. So the first would be Missouri. And yes read all accounts Smith knew what was going to happen. He tried to get his brother to stay behind. As he went he said he goes as a lamb to the slaughter i believe it was.
Missouri was on the wrong side and no matter how you try you spin it the people who put out an extermination order will never be the "good guys"
"Spin?" Spin this for me, who were the 1st to use the word "extermination?" Go google on Sidney Rigdon & his "Salt Sermon" & his "July 4th Oration." Then look up something called the "Danite Manifesto."
No one hunted down any Mormons either. The Mormon leaders, including Smith, were all in prison in Missouri. If anyone was inclined to kill them, that was the perfect opportunity. They were allowed to escape. How do you feel about Rigdon threatening apostates & unbelievers w/ "Extermination?"
These women are nothing to do with the Mormon Church. These women belong to a different church - the FLDS.
Mormons DO believe in the Holy Bible and study it diligently! Mormons do NOT practice polygamy.
Please, do not be part of slandering these wonderful people. They are honest, benevolent, charitable, hard-working, and kind. They've helped many, many people across the world and continue to do their work quietly and without fanfare.
Sorry, where in the new testament did Jesus say that there are to be multiple wives or husbands? These FLDS women wear different colored dresses to signify which "man" they belong to. What, women are chattel now? Slaves? Is this a religion or some sort of Bizarro World freak show? To the outside world they appear all innocent because they wear prairie dresses and ugly shoes. In reality, they are forced to sleep around with different men as they are assigned and reassigned as ordered.
It doesn't speak about multiple wives in christian Bible. Polygmay was introduced by Joseph Smith, the man who wrote the Book of Mormon, and continued by Brigham Young, who spoke about the evils of monagamy. (Yes, monagamy - google up his quotes!)
@queenlivesforever "In reality"? How would you know? Have you ever talked to them? Don't assume the worst about people until you get to know them. Go ask them a little about what they believe.

They aren't Christians. They don't study the Bible. Polygamy is not what the Bible wnats us to do. That is sexually immoral in the Bible. The Mormans read the Book of Morman.
I wonder if they have their magic underwear.

@1400deadwood The Bible must be followed just as much as we need to follow the teachings of Harry Potter And Winnie The Pooh and the Book of Mormon.

LOL! Republicans say we are a Christian nation and if so, then they have no complaint against polygyny.
:)

@1400deadwood whatever...
what I don't get is the contradiction.
1. Polygamy is not doctrinal or practiced today in LDS church
2. Polygamy continues to be justified as divinely ordained to be used today
please explain , I'm all ears.
