He's just a bigger skeleton than the others, nothing special, per se, from a 'threat' perspective, especially since he lies dormant there, so wtf. In Diablo 1 at least he made sense, since he lived in friggin Tristram and got killed there. So he was okay to roam the catacombs.

Besides I never thought blizzard stories have been all rip offs each other for quite some time, world tree=world, the voice in the void=old golds, cursed protagonist turned evil (arthas/kerrigan) and retro-conning backstory turning zerg and orcish horde into misunderstood 'good guys'.
@PaladinRageOldsql cursed the townspeople to suffer his wrath for eternity, and since his soul is partially demonic after Diablos attempted possession, he probably gets sent to the black abyss upon death, meaning he can ressurect and return to his cursed corpse.
What made Diablo 1 so great is that it kept you on edge with difficult moments like the Butcher and King Leoric. Especially in combination with the awesome music. Blizzard has already said that Normal in Diablo 3 will be very easy, so they already killed a part of the atmosphere right there. Call me a nay-sayer, but I doubt Diablo 3 will deliver anywhere near Diablo 1 or 2.

@GertUberNerd i think in nightmare and hell modes they'll make it much more difficult and random so that you don't know what's coming. you know since every dungeon is pretty much randomized.
maybe they will have an easy mode to teach people and the old fans can go straight into normal mode which will have a bit of difficulty, like diablo 2 where the difficulty can ramp up at certain parts even on normal.
but then you go to the next difficulty and normal seems like a kids game :P

I'm a little disappointed at the lack of terror generated by Leoric. I mean 'Hur Hur Hur Hur' just isn't quite as menacing as 'Looking for Baal?' followed by a WTF death and an agonising corpse run.

@ZikicaKikica seriously. WD's mana source needs to be changed to voodoo magik! overall mana should be completely removed from the game as its unbalanced and not unique to the characters.

I think Diablo should keep their gothic and dark theme... now its just another cool game with awesome graphics... the gothic theme is what set it apart from other games like god of wars...

@nulnoh219 and you can tell its kept its gothic theme from a 59 second short clip? wait til it comes out before you start saying "oh, its lost its theme, its not as cool anymore". honestly, i see people saying the same thing looking at d1 vs d2, how it lost some of its religious themes and shit. look at the settings. D1: descending into a church. obviously gonna be some religious shit there. d2: chasing a demon across the world. and yet, same amount of religious shit, just better hidden.

maybe the axe holds some significance in the lore that we dont know about yet.
we dont even know why or how he was resurrected as far as i know. so give them a chance there may be lore in the game that explains it.

I'm glad recently some games are using weapons that are wierd and new. For example in God of War yea he calls them swords but.... no. Theirs just awesome killing things but sword nonono.

@JungleFoxx according to diablo lore, after the dark wanderer "cleansed" the dungeons below tristram and defeated diablo, looters descended into the catacombs and caverns beneath the city to loot anything the hero left in his wake. it is highly likely, given that it is such a GODDAMN VALUABLE SWORD, that one of the looters took off with it, hence causing the skeletal form of king leoric to have to use his axe, which he owned before the sword, as a weapon when he ressurected.
