I like the imagery in this poem. Even if it were only read aloud (sans music) it would still get your brain thinking. Thinking about what your life means.
Been a proud fan since the 80s,. Songs of sorrow are good for the soul. Smart that they sneak in some "punk" ideas into tunes with a heartland target audience.
@earlajune Absolutely wrong. This is exactly X (minus Billy Zoom). You need to allow a band to grow or they end up touring for 30 years on their first three records.... oh wait a minute.
There is something seriously wrong: there are NO proper X videos on Youtube -- they've all been removed due to copyright infringement or whatever. They made some great clips in the 80s for songs like "Motel Room in My Bed" and "Because I Do." It's a crime you can't watch them on Youtube!
@chancesareshewears awesome, I hate americans, the liars, i hope the members of x all have a sleeping pill contest. their so punk. liar american jesus punk rock murder devil
@chancesareshewears how can you financially hurt a band that devoted energy to do it yourself punk rock 80's anti capitalism reagan gloabl nazi shit.. it just don't make no sense, do they want money for X tattoos done in hobo fashion as well? ha ha ha
Wow! Really, I was going buy and download the whole album from itunes, WMG you just lost a customer. You guys are missing out on a great advertising outlet....what a bunch of dickheads!
dear studio attorney who trolls the internet making sure your precious copyright isnt infringed: HOST THIS YOURSELF, OR GIVE THE FANS THE AUTHORITY TO DO SO THEMSELVES. greedy, selfish, lazy.
And if they did sell millions then everyone would miss the "good old days", when you could see them at a club instead of a coliseum. Like Fitzgeralds in Houston in 1986, I think it was.
Yea,theres a double live album with T.G. playing ,its good, from 1987 or so.I saw original band with Zoom 3 or 4 times also here in D.C. They were actually opening for Warren Zevon in 87 that time. ROSS
An Irish folk band I play with occasionally does this song, this is my first exposure to X. Breathtaking; poetic, pointed, powerful, perfect. An absolutely amazing band and song.
John Doe did an acoustic version of this by himself (not the one with Dave Alvin) that was on the IRS show on MTV in the late 80s. That is to this day the most beautiful acoustic rendition of a song I've heard.
This shows that Exene can harmonize like any typical singer, but she chooses different most the time. Still one of my favorites, and they performed it in Atlanta, at the Variety in 2008. Where they were and remain, a great American band!
This is my favorite song with them. John Doe lives in Frazier Park area about an north in the mountains north of LA..along HWY 5....he is such a gifted songwriter.....
I've been a fan of X for 22 years or so... how did i never hear this song?? i never owned this album - but i really like other songs on this album. how frickin great is it to discover such a great X song in 2008. - awesome.
I too have been a fan and this song was actually only premiered on a solo project withJohn Doe.
I last saw John at a small club on Fairfax and he was aged but great. Real dude playing real music. Not enough of that these days it seems to me or I am just getting old.
Was at the X show in Boston last night. Great version played with Exene! It is a crime that X were never bigger. Still an incredible band! Long Live X!!!!
Playing here in a couple of daze at First Avenue. Thinking of my good friend as he has just checked himself into treatment. This is his favorite song! The power of healing and music...
one of the all time great songs, from one of the finest bands ever to come out of LA, love those harmonies. tks for posting, big fan from way - back....
this song makes me cry & be ashamed to be an American. I got to where I considered X compared to the first three records sellouts but as I got older, their later period stuff made more sense.
saw jon doe 3 months back in in july in new york...for a cajun to see that show and growing up in "the eighties" WAS A HELL OF AN experiance..thank you jon..beer,gas,ride forever..
A great band from an underrated era. I recall listening to this in college and now, listening again I see what prophets they were.....all our great artists are. And yes, Ms Cervenka look pretty damn good here.
I was 14 years old in 1982 when I found punk. I through my metal records in the oven and warped em all. Then had my hair buzzed off to go the spiky route and joined the Decline of Western Civilization. God bless the Ramones, the Pistols and the Clash for stating it all and hail to the reigning godfather- Mr. Ness. SD
Too many people were listening to REM. Back in '83 I said both X and REM would be huge. In retrospect, it was wishful thinking. At least I didn't have to watch X sell out.
To westofthefeilds; Probably because most idiots at the time were too buisy focusing on ohh Micheal Jackson, Madona, Duran Duran, Def Leopard, Bon Jovie etcetera to give this groupe any notice.
Okay. I like punk. I like this band and I love this song.
