The engine was developed especially for the 6R4. Jaguar bought the design when B-spec was banned and 6R4 became redundant.

the original 6r4 was actually an 8r4,with the rover v8 engine,then the early 6r4 was the same engine with 2 cylinders sliced off the block making it a v6,lastly it was the jaguar v6 engine.
