I've rode over it in the backseat of a car while tripping on acid and doing a balloon of nitrous oxide - the same route these guys took. TOP THAT.

I am now watching the re-enactment of five people jumping off this bridge on CH 30 MSNBC. A coupe of them had injuries - broken neck and ribs - even though they fell in water. Slamming in water at high speeds feel like slamming on a concrete slab on the surface of water.

It all depends how you land in the water. If you dive in the right way, you can actually slip into the surface of the water from that height unscathed. But you have to be a skilled diver to know how to do that. A friend of mine jumped off a 55 foot bridge into want feet first and was fine. He said he saw a guy dive from almost 100 into the water and was fine also.

This bridge is popular amongst "jumpers". Behold, the Tampa version of the Golden Gate suicide spot. Also, this bridge shakes like mad (as per engineering is designed) during high winds/bad storms. Only maybe 2 or 3 times a year they close it down during super-bad storms or hurricane winds, or they give "small vehicle advisory". I'd be shitting my pants in a tiny vehicle or a motorcycle up there.

when did they rebuilt that bridge? I heard that the old one collapsed in 1980; 35 people died and one survived.

Actually, there are three lanes. Two regular and one full sized pull off that can double as a lane in high traffic times or future higher volumes also it is used as a full lane during hurricane evacuations. For hurricane convienience, all six lanes of the Skyway can be turned in one direction or the other to aid in evacuation. Really cool brige. I was at the opening.
