I, too, know that bittersweet feeling. So the point I agree with you the most on is that, yes, we all have our own opinion. For me, the music doesn't capture that feeling. It does for you. Music affects us all in different ways I guess - that's what makes it so beautiful :)

@maxthepwner if the character in the short film, or the persona that death cab is trying to reach, is anything like how i feel now, you're exactly right, max. i've been in love with my first real girlfriend for 6 years and we've had our ups and down but this time it's final. i love her more than the world. i hate it that i do, but it's the truth. and i can't help but feel like this song was made for me. she is beautiful, but she doesn't mean a thing to me.

@chesquitalinda it's funny, i used to as well. but now that it's been a few years since i've heard it, i find that i have a different interpretation... it seems that he is really lamenting the fact that they didn't treat each other as anything more than a means to an end... i used to think she really got the short of the stick here, but now i think maybe they just kind of were to young or confused or hurting to really know that what they were doing was cheap.
and maybe i'm just waaaaay off!
