2001 is perhaps the most beautiful movie, visually, ever. That's not enough. A movie should try to entertain its audience. People are constantly saying how movies these days have no good story and are only concerned with special effects. Yet, those same people have no problem with 2001. I did read Mr. Clarke's book and he explains everything, so it's not that I don't understand the movie. Blade Runner is much better. It proves that a movie can be beautiful without being boring and pretentious.
wow they really didnt know how to make trailers back in the day... all they did was provide information about the movie, what a waste of time, needs more explosions...
I disagree with the people attacking this film. If it were made today-or worse, in the 80's- the effects would not have been much better, neither the treatment would have been any better, as it would probably be filled with post-Star Wars sound effects and it would also probably be as patronizing as the voice over in this trailer.
i actually thought this film was dreadful, im not trolling im on here for some college work. I could not literally believe how many people loved this film O.o it was the single most boring film i've ever seen (for 2 hours, then complete confusion for 20 mins)
@angusrokks1 he enters a star gate and travels through time and space. Those colours and things were alien environments he was seeing and the room was probably constructed by the aliens who sent the monolith. if you're fine with everything else thereafter then it's all good.
@sstuddert ... oh, I actually thought the idea of the film was good, but would've been so much better in the hands of another director, AND made in say, the 80s instead. Ideas were good, horribly boring film, especially the begining ¬¬
@angusrokks1 no, the film would have suffered terribly in the hands of another director. The film is only boring if you have a short attention span, perhaps you'd just feel more comfortable watching spielberg?
@sstuddert Perhaps, I'm not really one to stick to 1 director, if the film is good, I don't care who directed it, as long as it's good. With no disrespect to Kubrick, I just didn't like the film. Perhaps if he made the film today with all this technology it would've been better.
I actually have a fairly decent attention span, film just wasn't entertaining enough for my taste, although I felt compelled to finish the film, that must mean something...
@angusrokks1 I'm a HUGE fan of the film but I don't have a problem with people finding it boring. What it's woo-hoo fans don't point out is how it's a very 1960s film; rebellious, psychedelic, anti-traditional, anti-storyline, etc. On the "Arthur C. Clarke level" it's as pure as Sci-fi gets but the way it tells the story is NOT the way you tell a Sci-fi story. It's not about the film being tedious. It's about how films in the 60s worked hard to not deliver the usual goods in the usual way.
@PMacnfriends I'd like to respond to that by saying that what was happening in the 1960's between the U.S and Russia was huge in regards to who would go to the moon first. The years building up to that had stirred up a mass intrest towards space. As soon as the race was over for who would get to the moon first (I'm not sure about the rest of the world) the u.s saw less and less reason to put money into space programs.....The very reason why we haven't gone to the moon again.
@PMacnfriends .....Had the U.S goverment kept up that same enthusiasm and drive (like they did the first moon landing) we would most likely have most of what is represented in this movie. On a funny note in regards to having the technology from this movie we did achieve the iPads......If you watch this movie and observe the two astronauts (on board with Hal) eating their food next to each other. Notice what they are looking at when watching themselves on the news. They had iPads ! ha ha
I just saw 2001 this weekend at the Uptown Theater in Minneapolis. One of my absolute favorite movies, especially on the big screen. If you ever get the chance to see it in 70mm - go go go! The best picture quality you'll ever see, guaranteed.
Tremendous movie. Thanks for posting this. I was a kid when the movie was first released in theaters. I didn't understand the story but I was amazed by it. I remember sitting with a friend of mine and we'd pore over the illustrations of the album cover of the soundtrack recording...then we'd see on TV in the news of the Apollo missions the latest progress toward the future that Kubrick created. Then came the end of Apollo, the bitterness of Vietnam, and that vision of the future was gone.
This movie taught me that a good movie does'nt have to have words.
