IMO the video is about a guy who is supposed to meet the pretty woman who is connected to the mob. The mob guy has him beat up and put in the freezer. The guys with badges aren't inspectors, they are cops checking up on the mob guys and don't realize there is someone trapped in the freezer. The guy (lead singer) misses the date with the woman, she leaves, thinking he didn't care about her. His chance with her is wasted. Great lyrics and a pretty cool video. Best SmashMouth song IMO.

ok, going to theorycraft something real quick here. He knew were something was buried that the mob wanted. He didn't tell them quick enough, so they beat the crap out of him when he went out for a date with the chick. During the beating, he eventually broke and told them where it was, and they went to go dig it up. they then locked him in the freezer (note how the handle has been seriously broken) to teach him not to mess with the mob again. The chick thinks she's been held up. the end.

Probably because it has an almost completely opposite feel to what they usually play. Most of their songs feel upbeat and at least somewhat cheery. This one doesn't really have much, if any, cheeriness in it, nor is it really all that upbeat. I like the song, but it's just so different from their usual stuff that I'd probably never place it with them if I didn't already know it or know the singers voice.
