I served on the U.S.S Joseph Strauss DDG-16 from 1975-77 and we had ASROC! Loved to hear those things go off!

If that thing 'separates' so early, it can't get very far from the ship that launched it! Consequently, the depth charge will blow up the ship that launched the weapon. But I've seen the nuke test of this device, so the missile doesn't seem to separate for a few miles.

I had the pleasure or letting one of these bad boys go (a dummy of course), probably one of the funnest things I ever did in the Navy with that didn't involve alcohol. The GM's had me in the launcher for hours afterward cleaning it up, but it was worth it.

Sonar control was pretty much directly below the launcher about 5 decks. You could hear it go off, man it was like on top gun, everyone in Sonar and CIC was cheering like mad.
