i love the autobahn, im from canada an im in germany, in canada or anywhere else u can drive as fast as you can, except in germany you dont have to worry about getting caught lol
At 270 km/h? No, it was more like 19 l/100 km or 12 mpg. If it was a regular unleaded V8, it would drop to maybe 25 to 30 l/100 km/h or 7 mpg.
However, doing 120 km/h or 75 mph, I was getting 8.5 l/100 km or 27 mpg. Remember, it's a very heavy car with a huge engine. 1.9 TDi is probably the best engine out there!
Hey. I'm from germany and i ask myself why everybody films on the Autobahn. ^^ Whats the Speedlimit on U.S. Highways ? Is there so much difference? (okay in germany you can drive as fast as your car can..)
The V-10 was a turbo diesel that got much better gas mileage. With gas being €1.25 a litre for unleaded or €0.95 for diesel... I made the mistake of renting an S500 and it cost me over €200 to drive from Berlin to Frankfurt. Granted, I averaged at 240-250 km/h at 3 in the morning, but €200! The TDI would have been about €100.
ok thanx Richie, really appreciate it. For some reason i still cant see the replies i posted. its too bad they dont have the v10 but the comfort i assume is the same along the whole line up of phaeton models and that was what i wanted to see. thanx once again i will surely try it out and hopefully have a video up
Sorry, I was at the airport and my cellphone wasn't fast enough and I thought I had "approved" your comment. Now I am at the hotel enjoying high-speed... anyhow, the comfort, I'd say the Phaeton's tops of all four German luxury sedans - Audi A8, Benz S350, BMW 750i. As for handling, A8 barely beats the Phaeton.
Hi, what do you thing has better handling in speeds above 200km/h, Audi A8 or current Mercedes S? It seems that you like A8 for handling. Current BMW 7er is known for not so good handling in speeds above 200km/h...
The S350 was the previous generation and handling was great at high speeds. It was the interior materials that turned me off. However, I have seen the new S550 in the U.S. and I can say this.. Benz has wised up on the interior quality and is now back to using good materials. I have not driven the new S at high speeds so I cannot comment.
hey Richie, i replied to ur post but somehow it said "comment send for evaluation" wth. anyway what i wanted to ask u was what company/dealership u got the phaeton to rent from. i am travelling to Germany this jan and i wanted to test out the car on the autobahn. also please give me the rate/day too.
Try the weekend rates.. always killer deals there. Be SURE to type in Friday 12 p.m. to Monday 9 a.m. - that's the only way you'll see the true weekend rate. I think it was $800 for the whole week, but weekend rates are around $160 for the whole weekend.
Hey Richie, where are u located? canada? i am in the market for a used phaeton in NY the w12 specifically and i was wondering how it felt riding at that speed...did it feel stable? also do u have more video from the ride in the phaeton?
That was a rental car from Germany. I drive an Audi myself, but this car was amazing. However, in excess of 220 km/h, I felt the Audi A8 was more stable than the Phaeton. At lower speeds, the Phaeton is a bit softer, but handles great, perhaps better than a BMW 750i.
thanx for that quick response. although i do not own an Audi or driven one, i was more interested in the Phaeton because of its build quiality (sans the electronics), the design and also the uniqueness that it possesses albeit the A8 which seems to be everywhere.
One more question i had was..what rental company did u get it from? a dealership or one of those AVIS, Hertz type ones? can u give me some details on the cost per day n so on?
It was thru Sixt Autovermietung in Frankfurt. It's Germany's largest rental agency, but I do not think they offer Phaeton V10's anymore. I was there a couple weeks ago and was disappointed to see V6 Phaetons. The V10 was a turbo diesel (not sold in the U.S.) and the performance was incredible.
I don't know, I have driven the Benz S350 and I can't say I am impressed with the cheap plastic all over the inside. However, I recently rode in a new S550 and it is clear Mercedes-Benz has sharply improved its quality. The previous (2000-2005) was horrible.
Nah, the 7 series isn't that great of a BMW nor is it that great of a large luxury car. BMW does great small to midsized cars, and their I-6's are great, but VW/Audi and Merecedes make better large cars. This looks lightyears better than a 7er and not the mention the only V10 diesel sedan today.
I agree, the i-Drive is a nightmare. Mercedes has improved its S-Klasse, much better than the 2005 models. The 2005 models felt very cheap inside, very disappointing!
Also, you asked about fuel economy and the limiter.. I accidentally deleted it, but the limiter was not removed. It was a factory Phaeton, no modifications. I drive an Audi myself and when I hit 100 mph, it shows 112 mph on the speedometer. And VW's also Audi.. I now think it was off because I also had a VW Passat doing the same thing. It may have been 250 km/h the whole time.
I got excellent gas mileage in that car. Doing 250 km/h, the computer showed 23L/100km. On one trip, almost 95% of the time at over 200 km/h, I got 15L/100 km. I was VERY impressed.
The Phaeton is suprisingly quiet for a diesel, well it a V10, its smooth running. I wonder what the Phaetonwould be like if it had the 6.0 V12 Diesel which is currently in the Audi Q7?
I have people telling me VW is intent on stopping the production. I would not be surprised to see that engine in the upcoming Audi A8. Not sure if VW wants to continue making Phaetons. Dealers around here are heavily discounting the Touraegs.
Nice car. But its just a VW (Volkswagen), Id rather buy the smallest BMW 7series, than the biggest Phaeton. It doesnt come close to a BMW or Mercedes. Its just a big Passat...
Same engine and transmission as Audi A8. The Passat is the same as the Audi A4. Having driven the BMW 7series, I absolutely hate the iDrive. It's the biggest mistake.
I dont say, that the engine is bad. Its quite a good car! But its "only" a Volkswagen. And you can´t say, that the Audi engine is better than the one from BMW, in no point. Okay, you may hat the I-Drive, but the Audi MMI bases on the I-Drive. They just call it MMI. Audi & Mercedes bought licenses from BMW to rebuilt it in their own version...
Yes, thats true, thats true! :-) Everybody has his own opinion! No doubt the Phaeton is a very good car, but my heart beats for BMW. :-) Wish you a lots of fun with your Phaeton and many nice races (you win) on the Autobahn! You rock, Dude! :-)
I think it'll no longer be imported to America, but will still be made in Germany. I'm not too sure about it though... if that was true, I would be disappointed!
What a shame, I have always loved the Phaeton and I love the looks of it as well. People worry about resale values and badge snobbery here in Ireland; but if you keep a car long enough that stops to matter. it really matters after a few years, then all cars are to enjoy. The Phaeton shares many parts with the Bentley I am told. I am a big fan!!
Having rented Audi A8, BMW 750i, Benz S350 - the VW Phaeton was the BEST! I think VW will stop selling Phaetons in the U.S. - thanks to badge snobbery!
lol, Phaeton is lovely..but the A8..just a notch better :D..S class is hideous..people buy it for the stupid badge. I wish someone could drive the A8 4.2 flat out, mines limited here in canada at about 240.
The S Class feels REALLY cheap, thanks to Chrysler's innovative cost-cutting measures! It seems Phaeton had more equipment than the A8, but the overall feel, A8 is a tad better.
