Fukkit, I'm a big Captain Sensible fan and when an artist TALKS to his audience, that's a good thing. The Damned lost their appeal when Sensible left.
Remember being at a gig Mr Cope played in Aberdeen in the mid-90s. Some girl in the front row said something about him not playing songs that she knew. He grabbed her, dragged her across the stage, and threw her out. Seemed a bit over the top at the time, and if he wasn't an 'entertainer' he'd be getting done for assualt.
@tigerspuds He's a twat. She's a twat. You are a twat. We are all twats. God is a twat. Some of us have got twats (twats with twats). Some of us are married to people with twats.
Why are some people so polite? Julian didn't want her there, he gets her out and then the crowd protests for her to come back annoy him?
Reading some past comments, I live in South Florida and let's face it...you brits love FL and California for holiday, yeah? Some of you love it so much, you decide to move here. I am pretty sure I couldn't live in a place where the ultimate amount of morons reside, so lay off the slagging, taking a piss at us...because you are starting to sound French.
I don't see how I make the US sound like such a horrid place (?) But I beg to differ on your second point the UK is increasingly Americanized- the things we eat, the things we watch, the way we talk you can not deny it.
Your statement reads as if Britain becoming Americanized is your nightmare. I understand you want to keep UK culture, but the US is not the escape goat, because we are known to embrace from every culture that stands here; good or bad food, tv, etc. Idol, Big Brother, Britain's Got Talent...huge here, i hate it, but do I say we are becoming Britainized with rubbish to others? No, I just turn the channel - I don't eat what lardos eat. Your exposure to it is irrelevant.
MY exposure to it may be irrelevant( I don't even have a TV) but many people pick up on the stuff that is presented to them and start to live by it. Unfortunately what seems to be exported from America are the worst things that the place has to offer....and people copy it...dude....I better not say too much in case some motherfucker pops a motherfuckin cap in my motherfuckin ass.
@famileehapee Er...what's an "escape goat"? Are they kept behind glass incase of emergancy? Big Brother, I think originates from Europe, that's the large expance of land just to the right of the UK on the map. I do have to agree about the other stuff though and say sorry but a lot of people in the UK hate all that crap too. But you in the good ol' US of A have sent us Justin Bieber, and that is just unforgivable. You say you want the 'Special Relationship' and then pull that one on us. Shame.
Julian Cope is one of the most important influences on my life for the past 20 years. Like wine, he just gets better with age. Thanks for posting this
Unfortunately, British people are becoming more and more influenced by the US and it seems that, before long, we will become nothing but a clone of the place.
Julian is really one of a kind but you really can't generalize about a nations people. Until I went to the states I was under the impression that most people there were thick as pig shit if not totally insane- obviously that is not the case. Have you listened to Julian cope music?
god love him a true original english ecentric, it's unusual for an artist to actualy have ANYTHING to say beyond the cliches.. He does seem to hold a grudge thou, Dave Balfe, Bill Drumond, saying that Blur did right Country House about Balfe, so parhaps he has a point. I did read Bill Drumond said about Julian something along the lines of 'he was the most talanted musicain Britain had produced but he would listen to people' I don't know, BTW it wrote Bill Drumond said, bit by accident..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I dunno, but it seems like Julian is acting the fascist. Telling someone to go out, wanting to escort them and wearing fascist clothes. Very entertaining though.
Too many people moan about performers not talking enough inbetween tracks, but I think it's good that he does. It shows that he wants really cares that the audience are there. Some people just do it, get the money and fuck off.
I've seen Copey on many occasions over the last 21 years ...mostly in Wolverhampton and there are always hecklers moaning that he talks too much or they don't know any of the songs etc etc...my advice is shut up, listen and go buy some of his fucking albums then!
It's a common courtesy to talk to the audience somewhat to let them know that you're not on autopilot and actually care about what you're doing. You should know some of the songs if you're going to the gig and/or keep an open-mind when you hear something you don't recognize. Sometimes when the music you usually hear is too pre-packaged and overly-processed, it can result in low musical appreciation of such acts as Cope. I feel sad for these people.
Its a shame as there are so very few musicians these days who are genuinely worth listening to or who are doing something uniquely special, but Cope is certainly one of them. Such a pity then that when they do get share their art/wisdom they get hounded by some persistent heckler attempting to undermine the whole thing.
Its a crying shame that his lanky butt monkey guitar tech has just had to remove himself from my birthday bash because he is a big light weight girly pants girl. Adester, your my bitch now slaaaaag
He was almost as angry as I saw him on TV a few years ago talking about the partial yet unsuccessful destruction of one of the stone circles at Dunydear(sp).
...The Copester has atypical 'Sense of Boundaries' - !
...Well - of course he does - !...
...So maybe not quite as brilliant as Dylan in '66 when he started mumbling @ a show, & the naysayers who didn't dig him going electric all shut up to hear what he was mumbling...
Trust me people... after hundreds of gigs, it's easy to lose it when a heckler just won't shut the hell up. Especially after you put up with it for a long time and people try to shut them up, but it doesn't work.
I've seen worse... I saw a guy walk into the audience and punch a heckler in the face. And this guy was always very calm and polite... he just lost it that particular night and punched him.
I was there and she was pissing everyone off big time. She didn't shut up with her inane comments throughout the gig. I was only surprised that it took Julian so long to react. Great gig tho...
She was very pissed and would not stop shouting things. At the point where the video starts julian had created at great vibe - a kind of quite tripy visualisation idea of a thing- and she did spoil it with her pointless, druken ranting. I'm sure no one was expecting such a spectacular response though.
hey...adeblair!....which shop?...maybe she went home and realised how being completely out of your skull is not a good place to be and now feels better about herself!....sometimes reality hurts!
I too was at this gig and yes she did go on as bit but he totaly over reacted. The poor girl was still in Tears half an hour later. They do say never meet your heroes. There is now a big stash of Copey c.d. in a charity shop somewhere in Gloucester!!
Julian is always doing shit like this, she should have seen it coming. At glastonbury about 4 years ago he overheard one of the security staff at the front say he was crap and had to be retrained from going down and starting a fight with him
Maybe she shouldn't have kept going on and on and just shut up. When you do crap like that you ruin the show for everyone. If you just keep your mouth shut he wouldn't have gone off.
@Sketchyboy10 I Bet he didn't have to be restrained too hard though. He may have been somewhat annoyed, but he's a lover, not a fighter. And that was said by a member of the InSecurity Staff. Covertly positioned to play on Julian's insecurities, by his arch-nemesis, Ian McCulloch.
I hope she was distraught for longer than 30 minutes. I'm surprised she wasn't forcefully removed earlier. If you blatantly attempt to ruin a performance, what on earth do you expect other than hostility in return?
Should be "They do say never meet your heroes and then talk through a performance and be surprised when nobody came to see and hear you babble on like a stupid cow..."
I was at this gig and that chick had it coming and then some. She was a stinky drunk pain in the arse who never shut up. But because she was a chick and her ranting was good natured she wasn't thrown out. I was near her for much of the evening and kept asking her to shut up and it was making me furious. So I'm not surprised Julian went off at her because her boring interruptions must have made it really hard for him to do his thing. Still a great gig tho.
