It's true that on Pitcairn island live 3 Romanian citizen !!!??? I wish to make conversetion with theme , this is my yahoo messenger "parasutadiguma" . Greeting from Romania . Florian D.
What if you go to all the bother of taking a much planned holiday there, and it turns out someone you know from where you live is there too. Oh no!!!! No use saying you don't mind, because the fact of you being there means your looking for isolation, if not solitude.
I wonder what people in the Pitcairns do in their everyday lives ...how do you support yourselves ...there´s hardly no tourism industry in the Pitcairns so you need to sow your own food. If anyone from the Pitcairns is reading this..please reply.
Who here has ever been to the Pitcairns ? If you want to live a quite life, then move to Ireland. You can have a back up in Ireland. A quite life and all the social standard needs, plus they speak english too. I used to live in Ireland myself, trust me.
Theres a big industry in selling carvings (curiosities to ships that pass by).
I've lived on Pitcairn. Yes, you need to grow your own food (its not that hard). Theres the fish to catch, and if you get injured, there is a dispensary. When I was injured on the island, the only way to contact the outside was through hamradio. I'm alive and well,a nd so is my mother.
what will you don once you´re old and want to go into retirement ? what if you break your leg on that rugged island ? you have to go to NZ but how ? there´s no transportation, no social security, no entertainment, unemployment office ...it´s like living on your own locked up in a time warp...no schooloing for children, fun paks for them ...think of all the downsides.
No schooling? Pitcairn has a school- its been there for over 100 years! I should know- my brother attended for three years!
Plenty of entertainment. NZ by boat- Iwas involved in a terrible accident and we actually travelled to Tahiti, rather than NZ.
No need for unemployment- theres always food. Money comes from carvings and souveniers sold on ships. Food comes from the ocean, gardens, chickens goats and non-perishables brought in from abroad.
Who needs transportation? the whole island is 2 square miles! And we used motorbikes and quad-bikes. We made our own fun- like they did BEFORE the advent of tv and the internet.
I had a BLISSFUL childhood on Pitcairn. It encouraged our imaginations. whats a fun-pak? I never had one, and I don't think its necessary for a happy childhood.
and there is basically nothing to do there. What if you don´t get along with the people? theres is no radio or tv broadcast, there´s only one phone booth. Thank God they have internet connection.
I know I can entertain myself without the telly, I don´t usually get too much time to watch the telly but I like watching the news and without telephones or internet, how would you expect to keep in touch with your loved ones back home ? or the world outside ?
My apologies to you Treemeadow and beauferret for ever doubting you. I like the Pitcairns and although I have never been there and probably never will be, I still would so much like to live there ...Your childhood and beauferret´s must have been great. Why did you live the Pitcairns ? Are you a native to the Pitcairns ?
No, we are't. My father was the church minister. We had only been assigned one term (Two years) but my parents loved it so much (my dad especially) they volunteered to do 2 more.
In the end, our father was offered another placement in Papua New Guinea, so we left. Although I'm not a native, it feels like my roots are from pitcairn.
So, life in the Pitcairns is that great. I can´t imagine what it must be like. How come you ended up living there ? If I had been yiu, I wouldn´t have left at all. I would just go abroad for holidays and then back into the Pits
Well, on Pitcairn, holidays take place in PARADISE! Oeno Island. Land untouched (except for a few minor things). The most clean of oceans-
beautiful reefs (which are navigated using a technique passed on generation to generation). Best weather, pure sands- the best fishing IN THW WORLD (I'm not even exaggerating) and its own native wildlife.
I would upload some of our videos (about 20+ hours of footage)
But I have to respect the privacy of the islanders.
well seeing that its a famous place, heaps of folk from around the world come to see the island, & thers always work to be done, building, gardening, fishing
I lived there too, although we were both kids at the time. Most people there have TVs, so thjey';d watch videos. Teh rest fo the time you had to work to earn your living- gradneing, fishing.
Mind you, its still all laid back and quite leisurely. beauferret and I lived there for four years.
I must admit that living in the Pitcairns is an idea that has been on my mind for a long time what once there, what would I do there ? There are no jobs, everyone´s expected to fend for themselves ( work for your own food )
That´s nice ! There are only 50 people living on the island, I suppose they have to be like one big family. What about immigrations procedures ? do you need to get a visa when you travel to the Pitcairns ? It´s a UK overseas territory so I can go hassle free on my british passport, isn´t it ?
What about customs and excise ? Can I bring in anything I want ? pets, liquids, weapons, drugs and narcotics, I mean ... is there a control point when you arrive in the island on a boat ?
Yes, there is a control point, and its before you board in New Zealand. As far as I'm aware, you can bring in cigarettes. I don't know the procedure for animals, but pitcairn no longer has any dogs on the island. They have had feral cat problems int he past and rats as well (once the cat problem was over, figures)
No weapons- unless you are authroised (as with anywhere).
The incestual history of Pitcairn pales to what happened on Clipperton Island. (between Mexico and Hawai'i) No-one had fun there; it's also the most hurricane wracked atoll on the planet.
I want to go to Pitcairn. It's 45 people in a tiny agrarian town on a little island that are all thousands of miles from any humans. It's too bad everybody's emigrating to New Zealand.
