Question. What makes a scale "harmonized". Or is this term just being used to indicate that the chosen chord harmonizes with the melody at any given moment? Please advise. thanks
Very straightforwardly put. Thanks for breaking down to the understandable detail. inspiring teachingwise. not too commonly i find it inspiring when teaching...
Hi great lesson u solve the mystery behind jazz that is voice leading I believe jazz is complex because it requires a good chord progression to cover voice leading in the Main lead. I like ur style because when I solo play I do the same thing can u plz post more lessons for the same kind to get more insight may be some more songs. Thanks n god bless
i am new to jazz. I play ina jazz band, and the leader says just play straight quarter notes with the chords. Now, this chord melody stuff, is that looking at a chart and arranging a more flavorful way to play it solo? Would you play this song in a jazz band using straight quarter notes?
@kaylashalaylaaaaa - gotta work on the theory. Tough in the beginning but easier as you get into it. Really takes you to the next level. Sorry - no shortcuts to being good at something :-(
i ned to have a chord melody arrangement for my audition for humber college for guitar jazz. would you reccomend using this melody as an audition piece?
You should try adding a Eb on the 5th string to the Gm7 voicing then harmonizing the C melody note with a Gb9(-5) to get the bass movement to F then voice the Fm7 with an E natural instead of Eb on the 2nd string to get that minor major seventh sound.
Great lesson! I spent hours researching online about chord melodies, but this video really made me understand how to construct my own arrangement and incorporate melodies in my guitar playing! Thank you so much! XD
Just a little advice on some of the stuff this guy says:
Unless you have a pretty solid understanding of music theory, that is, how the interworkings of chords, scales, modes, dominants, diminished, major, minor, etc. function to make "good music", you should worry more about how it sounds than about the details. Explore your options with a chord library and pay attention to how things work together, and how sometimes they don't. Crawl before you walk, walk before you run.
Sorry my bad english, did you say "Hendrix chord" for C7#9 in '4:8? Its cause I've already hear this name of chord in jazz, I guess that it's from hendrix style.
Very nice video, but maybe it would be wise to make sure that you can sing your melody in tune, because being able to sing what you are going to play improves your hearing and eventually your playing.
@goreri you're wrong. you dont have to be able to sing well out loud to be able to hear a melody in your head well. otherwise every great guitar player would be a phenomenal singer ...
this was an excellent lesson my friend. I decided to make my own arrangement for "When you Wish Upon a Star" after watching this. I started it in the key of Cmaj. So, I used the C harmonized scale of course. But I have a question, eventually, one of the melody notes I ran into was a C#. Obviously the C scale has no imperfections so I was wondering if I had no choice but to deviate from the scale for that one note. thanks man!
you have a few options: you can play the Bmin7b5 chord as a dominat sharp 9 (B7#9) and that will give you the C# you need without leaving the scale. You can also play the flat5 sub of the G7 chord (C#7) and this will give what you need without leaving the scale (in theory) or you can play outside the scale and hit that c# in a passing chord that is a half step away from a scale tone. good luck..send me a note if you need further explanation..good luck
ah of course! forgot about those #9 chords n stuff. Too busy focusing on the notes of the scale and I didn't remember that you can alter them. Thanks a lot man! Really helped!
you are correct to a point, the E note in this case creates an altered chord, this alteration creates tension which can then be resolved be returning to the parent scaled on the next chord. Thanks for your comment
@illdoitagain dear friend, allow me to disagree with you. It's not that E creates an altered chord, instead, also @wobblingbaby2, C7#9 is a secondary dominant for the IIm7 chord of the Eb major scale, thus the Fmin7 chord which is followed.
Thank you so very much. I've been wondering how to do this for years. I notice that the harmonized chords fall into that old step, step, half step, step, step, step, half step pattern.
Thanks for turning on the light bulb above my head (even if it's just a 15w bulb). You are the first teacher who ever explained the 'how' to construct a chord melody with clarity. I understand you.
I also dig that the 'science' of music is the mathematics, but the 'art' is what we choose to play. You are a fine guitarist...and an even better teacher!
I understand the part where the chosen chord must contain the melody use, but how am I suppose know which bass note should I chose? By the way, awesome lesson!!! Please keep post some more
The base note is up to you, just keep it in Key, use a harmonized scale select chords only in that scale and you cant go wrong! try to keep your chords close together to promote voice leading. good luck
This a a very helpful, and immediately practical lesson. Very much sounds like authentic jazz chord melody style. Thanks for posting it.
ardamarder-your comment confused me.
i read it before viewing the vid, and expected to see a random set of chords that did not make sense or work but that is not at all the case . At least to my ears. It is true when there are many chords that can be used for a given melody.
The chords you choose are very random. Just because they include a note of the melody and they are within the harmony of the scale doesn't mean you're supposed to use them. Besides you can use another chord for the same note. Why this one? Don't you think there has to be some kind of an order. Otherwise does it mean you can just randomly use any chord in Eb and has that melody note?
Thank you very much for the wonderful lesson. Now I know what I have been wondering about. And I have something to start with to build up my chord melody knowledge and put it into practice thanks to you.
Thank You! This lesson has ben so very helpful!!! I am s t r u g g l i n g at learning guitar (for a LONG time) and, at my "pre-school" level need to run over and over a lesson many times. yes, but reading music is not difficult. It really is easy. good luck

-the bass note can be any note in the key ie. Eb
-the root note is used to create the triad (minor, major, diminished, etc.)
-you can put any extention on the triads that you want ie. 7th, 11th 13th etc.
Is this correct?
should the melody note usually be part of the chord construction?

Wait, correct me if im wrong.
So for ex; "My Funny Valentine"
the 1st chord is Cm7. But in chord melody you dont have to play Cm7, you can play other chord with C in it? since C is the 1st note of the melody.
Is that correct?
scotpet11 2 years ago
this is absolutely correct, the chord you use is not dependent on the melody note, though your chosen chord must contain the melody note
